Ep53 - I RUINED my $3,500 CVT Roof Top Tent
Vlog 53
Remember vlog 52 from last week? Yea, well that trip was more perilous than we had thought. My CVT Mt Denali rooftop tent did not make it either.

Try steam cleaning it. And that is why I will NEVER live in a place with a HOA. HOA’s should be outlawed. If you can’t set up a tent at your house for a couple of hours, something is very wrong.

Hahaha. I agree! But I also agree with what the HOA is supposed to be doing. It's just in this scenario, we have a neighbor that's a little too...

So you put your tent away wet, you complained about it and they gave you a new tent? Good Lord!. You are one of the reasons that tents costs $3,500.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't get past the 3:25 mark.... skip long intros, skip long video transitions and just get to the point. It's often what you don't include that makes a video enjoyable to watch.
What an adventure! Thanks for sharing. Expensive lessons learned.
Thanks Jason for sharing your ups and downs. Makes me feel like we are all in this together. God Bless.
Thanks for sharing, everyone makes mistakes, it’s just how we deal with them after that affects the outcome. Peace yall
That’s a tough lesson, at least you were fortunate enough to have a working relationship with CVT. Keep up the good vids.
Dude this editing is on point! Love the flow of your videos. I get your inspiration and your interpretation of story telling is great.
thx a lot for the info. and demo... I was just looking at getting one of those. Never thought it could go bad so fast.
The dogs and I spent the night up in my CVT on top of the Turtleback when floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey came into my house. Been busy dealing with the aftermath of that; but I think I'll pull the trailer out and check the tent this weekend!
You certainly wont forget again!!! What great tents they make!! And by the looks of it a great service as well!!
This was a great episode to watch. I appreciate how you took something catastrophic and made the best of it. These things happen, that’s what I’ve learned in my old age. I’d bet you’re not the first person to do that. I was hoping CVT would do a tent swap, and use yours for testing and research! I do a lot of photo shoots, and I’ve packed away gear wet, but I’ve learned to set a timed reminder on my phone, for 12 hours later, so that helps to mitigate some of the impact, and usually I’m home or able to address it by then. I also respect the TARDIS decal you’re rocking. Safe journeys.
OMG such a looooooong story, that's 22 minutes of my life I will never get back.
Unless the stitching or canvas is rotten......who cares? Spots are just cammo!
Aw crap, this just reminded me that we didn't air ours out from last use either! Dammit!
I did this to my ground tent as well after backpacking near the ocean. It was also only a week or so but by the time I got back home and unpacked it stank and was covered. I ended up using Lysol wipes believe it or not and some elbow grease. One thing is make sure you re-waterproof it! My tent was wetting through after until I re did it!
The excitement of a flooded Tacoma lended a hand 🤚
happy days.... so glad it all turned out for you and yours
I just found your channel, I'm not even into this style of tents. I watched it all cause of the great job on the edit. Thumbs up.
So is this something they'd do for every forgetful customer or just people with successful youtube channels?

Gray Man he got a lesser model, the company will professionally clean it and sell it as a refurbished I imagine. The reason I say he got a lesser model is the difference in his first ladders and the ladder of the one they have him.
Sucks to see this happen... Unfortunately it happens.. Can't wait to see the new setup!!
Spoke with you in Gallup NM and you directed my here. Thanks brother, great videos.
oh man, that was just bad luck, thanks for sharing.
ok so now if I ever get a RTT I know not to put away wet for very long. Thank you for sharing
That musty smell! Gack! Like my basement that flooded in Michigan. Looks like they took care of you right though Jason. Bravo CVT
I kept yelling at your video... Call Bobby! Glad you did and the CVT team helped you out. TN shop looks good
Thanks for the lesson now I'm worried about it and want to check on my Denali
Great video. To bad about the mould but worked out in the end. Mould on the tent is one of my biggest fears.
I did this with my fridge! but now I will never forget to clean up when I get home
Great visual storytelling! You weren't so irritated with your girls that you didn't remember to set up a 2nd cam and include them in the story. Good work. Also.....lesson learned vicariously.
CVT sells the tent part separately I’ve bought all kinds of spare parts from them this year I bought a new cover like $150 on my door in two days. They are really good.

I had a CVT tent, got it when they were still in Bend, approximately 5 years ago. Bobby and CVT as a whole, absolutely awesome!
This was the first “overlanding” video I ever watched. Seriously, it was.
can't set up a tent on your private property... lol FREEDOM!
Outstanding customer service.
This dudes got the vids down. Solid 👍🏻
What. A. Horrible. Situation. My heart bled for you on that one Jason. I'm the proud owner of a 12x14' canvas wall tent and I'm obsessive about drying it out to bone dry before storing it as we live on the edge of the Northern Boreal Rain Forest. Can so relate with forgetting such a thing, I've done it!?
Maaaaan even when you are sad you make great video :)
Bobby’s the man. Love our CVT.... it’s nice living close in nooga too! Thom is pretty good with that forklift too.
I've sweated a full bullets with my CVT awning wall tent after putting it away wet and cold for a week, day 7 or 10 it was still mold free though. I've still got a couple years until i install my RTT on my trailer, kids not quite old enough yet, cant wait to have a tree fort
Try mirazyme enzyme cleaner. Made for paddle sports gear. It’ll eat the mold.

Last time I was up there bobby said he was going to sell it
Those guys in Chattanooga are good dudes. Wife and I visited them one afternoon in mid November (last month) and she was not too wild about the RTT idea but a couple of hours there, getting to see everything up close and her opinion really changed.
Stop crying about it... clean it and use it, move on. Lesson learned.
great video bobby is great just bought a trailer and tent from him two weeks ago in Chattanooga
You got a nice bishop 👍🏽 and I liked the Sundance sweater.
I watched your video, enjoyed the content...but when I saw the “T.A.R.D.I.S.” sticker on your trailer...I subscribed right away! 👍🏻
Your vids have a nice production value vs raw candid dynamic which works well on me, happy trails!
Keep the videos a coming your channel should grow! Enjoy them. Hope to one day meet you and hang out.
I live in tents most the time.I Use Iosso Mold and Mildew & Stain Remover. This is my go-to product.
Similar thing happened to me. I have the SmittyBilt RTT (which has been incredible). Hurricane Irma came through and evidently lifted the cover enough to let the rain in. I opened it about a week later and my mold and stains looks significantly worse than yours. The stains are there still, but all the mold is dead. I used a mix of vinegar/water and household upholstry cleaner then hosed it out for an eternity. Foam mattress i soaked down in lysol and washed the cover in normal washing machine. Pillows and cases went in the garbage. Sleeping bags just got washed like normal. Your tent ain't ruined at all, bud. Just looks different now! Some organic camouflage.
Bummer that this happened to you. Thanks for sharing, I learned a good lesson today before it happens to us too. Seems like CVT took care of you?
Aye Mate. you can fix problem with the blend of 50/50 Apple cider vinegar and water only as when you place Lemon juice it neutralises the acid of the vinegar. only use vinegar and water. spray on and wipe with micro fibre. sorry this is a late blog but it works on your non-tare fabric.
Steam clean with an upholstery pre-spray, and acid rinse. Fog with benefect. Set an air mover or two inside. Let it dry. Ive done it with a canvas tent a guy brought to me with the same problem. Fixed it up pretty well.
Hey Jason - I love your videos and adventures that you go on... I know you list out your gear on your videos but tell me about that screen(?) on your desk that cycles thru time, weather, etc! Looks sweet! :)
So I am new to your channel and really enjoy your content. This info is late but for future reference. Bleach will not kill mold. Use a product called Micoban. It is safe to use on any material and will safely kill the mold. Keep up the good material!
Jason, Have you asked CVT if you could spray white distilled vinegar on the mold to kill it. I have friends who have used it on tents of the ground variety and have had success...the vinegar smell dissipates over time.
Blue dawn dish soap and a scrub, then hit with the pressure washer. Works every time.
Ouch. Now I'm paranoid I didn't dry mine properly!

Just let them air out for a few hours when you get home... you'll be fine.
Great video, CVT is the ticket.
Have you ever had an issue of water accumulating on the fly just below the stargazer window? Water seems to puddle on both sides. I have to raise the fly to disperse the water. I had in October initially made a trip to Chattanooga with a trailer that wasn't wide enough in Tom's opinion. On May 1st we went back and it's funny actually picked up the tent we were supposed to get in October from their outlet (brand new but with a floor dent on ladder side floor with a $1000 discount). I have two dogs and added in front of the left side ladder a six step Torklift A7806 steps plus an additional seventh step to allow the dogs to enter the tent w/o assistance. They go up and down with no problem. We sit and go down the steps as well. I had to mount the Denali tent at 60 inches to allow the use of the steps.
Powerwash it... It works fine... This happened to me in 5 days .. powerwashed it with a soap bleach mixture and then a rinse... The powerwasher gets into the weave of the fabric... Then air dry outside or a heater inside the garage in winter. Stains all gone.
Was just a cvt there the other day. Great guys there
Just a thought..I had a 88 liter. Backpack a big expensive one that had the same problem your tent did...I sprayed it with mean green and scrubbed the spots. With a scrub brush and it all came out then I dried it..kind of the same type material..)use thought I’d let you know.i know you’ve had other suggestions but I just. Did this and it worked...
Hi, you have to wash with baking powder, soap and water... let soak 1 hour or so and clean off.. You have to do this inside and out
Someone may have already said this but all you should have let it dry well, go to a local carpet cleaning company and get a fungicide or what ever they use for mold and spray it out then steam clean and power wash then let dry well. Hope all turns out good. Love the videos man def a great channel! Edit Or you could just do what you did lol. commented before finishing the video
after this video we all know CVT is run by angels.
Great video, but I feel like the audio is slightly misaligned at points throughout this video, and a few of your previous ones. I enjoy the content, just wasn’t sure if my platform was causing the misalignment or if they audio is brought in separate from the video and is slightly off alignment.
never say never, cuz you will jinx yourself............
New subscriber, but I'm enjoying your videos Jason. I'm just getting started with an 06 Tacoma 4x4. Glad CVT came through for you in this situation, they seem like a good upstanding business. Since you have the Tardis on the back of the Turtleback, does that mean its bigger on the inside?
Try using some Tilex, that stuff works wonders or even some bathroom cleaners for mold and mildew and scrub with a course brissel brush.
my ten year old 25 dollar wal-mart tent lasted longer lol but then again I take care of my things.
Buy a bottle of Sterigear and spray in on the tent; hospitals use it and medical centers. Great stuff.
The moral is leave it out and pay the HOA fine instead of the new tent bill, lol. Glad you got a new one.
its not ruined, now it has character!!!!
I like the initial music clip from Dyalla, but I can’t find it anywhere. The old Smokey Robinson song “ ooh baby baby “
Did you try a casher presser machine(gaz), you can plug hot water and wash it with high pressure...I pretty sure that work and you will can sell it without problem....It's take a big hot water tank!!!
Concrobium. You can buy this at Home Depot when I had a leak in my trunk that developed mold. Worked way better than bleech or anything else that I tried.
Chattanooga!!! My hometown! I wish I could've ran into you!
"Honey, I was out on a trip. A bear attacked the tent, tearing it to shreds! I was lucky to get away with my life. It hurts because the tent is ruined. I'm so sad this happened because there are so many memories in that tent. Can I get another one?"
In the future you should consider using an O3 generator to remove the smells. Ozonolysis reactions do a great job at breaking down biomolecules that cause nasty smells 👍🏾.
Dude, your videos are awesome! I wish I had the video making skills. Just got a 4runner trail edition and plan on some upgrades. Love to go camping. Question: Why did you choose a turtleback over an off road tear drop? I'm having a hard time deciding....
Hi 👋... first time here... ruined..?? Really..?? CVT sounds like a great 👍 company. I'll take it as is... I'm a cancer survivor (3 years) with nerve damage at my spine from the tumor... would love ❤️ to be able to camp again but was financially ruined by the expense of fighting my cancer... Disability barely covers living expenses NO extra for equipment... YOU are truly blessed...I appreciate you sharing your experiences...I'm hoping to do a similar vlog someday soon... God bless, thanks 🙏🏻 for listening.
I wonder if swimming pool chlorine would have worked, I have a swimming pool in Az. its always a fight keeping it clean
We need to use some simple green and sprayed and scrubber with a soft brush
Super easy with proper equipment
Tents in the Army are treated with a Mildew Resistant Coating. Available at Walmart. Only reason I've never needed it is because I've never been to the Mojave desert, in the rain.
I once borrowed a tent trailer that had the same issue. I used 50/50 bleach & water. Worked just fine. Your mixture was too watered down.
Did I miss the part where he said ... yeah they are giving me a free tent... I'm not even going to mention paying 3500.00 for a tent :-) (yeah you got me, I'm a pop up trailer RV person).

I paid 2500 for a crappy old motor home 22 months ago and have been living in it ever since. Last winter in north Idaho. This winter I drove it to Vegas. Needed flex seal to seal some leaks. Added solar panels. No HOA and never lived for so cheap.
I wonder if spraying on your diluted bleach/water combo and then closing it up for the night, and then opening it back up in the morning would allow the diluted bleach to help actually remove the stains. Just thinking allowing a bit of soak time, rather than spraying it on and then it dries too quickly for it to do the job of stain removal. Good deal on getting it replaced for the new owner.
Have you tried mildew mold remover and stain remover, home depots sell something similar that is made for these instances if I remember.
You'll need to hand scrub it with a bristle brush or green scrubbie and either a water/vinegar mix or you can get a bottle of mildew killer from Home Depot. The brush or scrubbie is necessary to mechanically remove the mold, and (particularly) the stuff from HD will kill the mold. As for the discoloration, not alot you can do to remove it. It'll just look dingy.
Get a hot wash and spray it down going to your local camping supply store they sell cleaner to keep the mold from coming back it’s used on pull behind camper
I purchased a simpson111 arb tent on Craigslist, it was way worse than this, I know I'm probably too late but distilled white vinegar , sunlight, and concrobium mold stain remover is the ticket. Looked almost brand new. Filled a couple tiny holes with shoe goo as well. Don't put you rtt away wet !
Jason, from the image of the new swing arm it looks as though it is cracked or not welded correctly
time to leave the HOA...smh
Shirt is epic
Just stumbled across your channel for some reason. I'm a Jeep guy but I don't camp. Anyway 2 suggestion if someone has not already suggested it. White vinegar for the mold. It really works great and cleans up nice. Move out of the HOA as soon as possible!!!!! I would rather live next door to someone that paints their house pink than live in a HOA.
