Shauna x Part 3 in my review of The Housekeeper’s Diary by Wendy Berry!
A memoir that was banned in Britain!
It gives us a very interesting insight into the relationship between the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana and also 7 years of Prince William and Prince Harry’s childhood. It is a rare first-hand account.

People don’t understand how the public Diana was “not the one we got” … it’s incredibly how the King has done everything he can to protect her reputation in life and in death, for the boys.

It's to the King's huge credit that he never once sought to set the record straight about Diana, but instead took all the blame and abuse hurled at him for thirty years, on the chin, with never a complaint.

I find it ridiculous that Diana would be "lonely" for a weekend and needed extra company when she had 2 kids. There is so much she could have found to do with them.

TOTALLY agree with you about Charles and Diana, Shauna. It has driven me bonkers for years when people get all righteous in one direction or another. Two totally unsuited partners, doing their best and mucking up the marriage anyway. Life is complicated - lots and lots of marriages don't work out for all kinds of reasons. My first marriage didn't work out - and I'd have hated to have every yucky detail splattered all over the tabloids.

But there was more riding on this marriage. At the time a divorce was inconceivable. The two of them believed it was marriage for life, happy or not. So why couldnt they both focus on being happy? Many say it was an arranged marriage. Well, many arranged marriages work out fine when the couple focus on compromise and respect for the other person. Both were at fault but I suspect Charles is simply too selfish to put anyone before himself. Even Camilla goes back to her own house at weekends because he's such hard work. I read the Tom Bower book on Charles. Charles is a bigger whinger than Harry - I dont know how any woman puts up with him.

  • @katiehill619

@rosiebottom3870 nah. I don't buy he's any worse than any other imperfect human being. Raised in a challenging time, with no defined role or focus, and the prospect of decades and decades of being in the heir role. Very challenging. Diana was deeply damaged from a miserable childhood, and was incredibly needy and attention focused, with wild mood swings. Hard for both of them. Sometimes marriages work, and sometimes they are awful, despite everyone trying their best.

Even so, if I was going to a place like Highgrove for a weekend, I would be packing clean clothes with perhaps new underwear. She would have been aware that staff carry your suitcase to your room and since she has been around court circles due to her father, the unpacking and placing your clothes on hangers etc would be part of the job of the housekeeper.

More importantly why would the housekeeper reveal this embarrassing detail about Sarah Ferguson. It was totally uncalled for and frankly it makes the housekeeper seem small and petty. I think this really a case of her dumping on Fergie after the infamous “photo” and how we as human beings have a tendency to really kick a person when they’re down.

I had never heard of this book. Sounds like a real insight and unlike most, even handed. Diana infamously talked about William having a normal upbring. She was an aristocrat from a stately home, married to a Prince in a house with staff and security. What would she know about a 'normal' upbringing? Whatever that is.

Diana’s family upbringing with her parents very unhappy marriage and acrimonius divorce ( some say abusive ) allegedly left lifelong psychological damage. The wronged princess fairytale does neither Charles nor Diana justice. They were flawed human beings just like the rest of us.

I can understand the Royals view on feeling how they were betrayed by this publication then. Not such a book had been done since the syrupy biography of “The Two Little Princesses” by Nanny Crawford on Elizabeth and Margaret. Nanny C was given the cold shoulder and hers was practically trickle pudding. Now Wendy Berry’s book is a great down to earth account which sets some records straight.

Imo, had Diana not made the relationship a competition and used it to undermine, attack or vilify Charles and to paint herself as a doe-eyed innocent then the circumstances wouldn't matter. But she did. Diana selfishly put William and H in the awful position of choosing sides which is harmful to children of divorce. Diana did that, not Charles. And to this day Camilla and Charles deal with the fallout Diana caused. It's wrong. Dramatic ending! 🤣Of course I want to hear more!😊Enjoy your lunch with the 'girls'!

Sadly Prince Charles and princess Diana had almost nothing in common, except their devotion to Royal Duty and of course their sons . Big age gap as well. They could have been the best of friends but were not suitable at all for each other. On the other hand Prince Andrew and Sarah were really a perfect match and have continued to live together since the day they got married. Despite the divorce . Have a lovely and joyous Christmas Shauna .

At 7:50min when you talk about William having a normal upbringing, I remember many years ago in the 90's, back in Mozambique 🇲🇿 , my mum commenting on Diana's "new education style" for the boys, saying that would led to a disaster!! The remaining Royal families, referring mostly to Europeans, they should seek a most Roboust Education, versed in Strategy, History, Politics as well, Engineer's, Maths all sciences or schools that would bring more smarter, strong, diplomatic, influential families that represent Traditions, Values, good costumes, Christianity as well, etc...

Your Mother must have been a very smart woman to be able to see how some behavior in parenting can lead to a unpredictable future for children. These two children are perfect examples of this, bless their hearts, I just wish Harry could understand that you don’t have to live with it all your life. Get on with life. And it truly looked like he was doing that he seemed to have settled down and been happy with his life. But then Meghan came along and dug up all the muck and changed him so much that now he’s very unlikeable. It’s sad. He seems to enjoy being told that he’s unhappy and always right to demand everything. Meghan needs mental health treatment but it won’t happen she thinks she’s brilliant. I hope you have had a good life and with the Mother you have I’m sure you probably did. Happy New Year and many blessings in 2024! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁

This book is interesting and I like that you’re offering a balanced view of both Charles and Diana. Considering the machinations to stop Charles from being with Camilla and that his and Diana’s relationship was rushed and encouraged by the RF, I’m not sure it’s fair to blame Charles for the failure of the marriage, especially if Diana knew he had feelings for Camilla but married him anyway. I had heard that while he emotionally cheated first, she had the first physical affair, but regardless of the order of things, they were two incompatible people stuck in a bad marriage and both found solace where they could. I’m not moralizing or excusing adultery, but if both partners cheat, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a wash. It sounds like they both treated each other badly at various points. I look at it as a tragedy for all involved.

I don’t know! I really dislike „authors“ who are trusted by someone and then go on to write books like this! It really rubbs me the wrong way! They should imagine the same betrayal would happen to them!!!!! How would they feel??? On another note, I very much appreciate your talent and thank you for sharing it with us Shauna!👋🏼🎄🇦🇹

Yes, would love to hear more from this book please. I'm particularly looking forward to when it talks about the boys and the effect their parents' goings on had on them, so far they don't seem to have featured very much.

Love your channel! Have to take a different point of view about Andrew though, and his reputation at that time. I am an American, and yet we were all aware of Koo Stark, so I don’t know that he was looked upon all that favorably at least in the USA.
