Ep13 We cycled from Vienna to Budapest, Euro Velo 6

We embarked on an unforgettable journey, cycle touring through the heart of Europe on the Euro Velo 6 cycle path! Over the course of 7 days, we rode over 370km, crossing three countries; Austria, Slovakia and Budapest, visiting three capital cities; Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. 🚴‍♂️🌍
Join us as we relive our biggest and most enduring adventure yet. We where faced with a myriad of complications along the way, from getting lost and having to tackle rough dirt trails to having the frustration of not being able to find any shops open for food aswell as dealing with migraines and bad hayfever, this ride left us truly tested. On top of these complications, we didn’t train or prepare for this ride at all! And for Kaitlan, who has had minimal riding experience, this was a monumental challenge.
Watch our video to see how we overcome all this and how we experienced Central Europe on the Euro Velo 6 cycle path.

Hi Zach, sorry to hear about your migraines. I am a migraine sufferer myself. What works for you to manage the pain? I like running cold water over my head for a few minutes. That really helps. Also, drinking fizzy drinks e.g. sparkling water can help. What are the triggers for your migraines do you think? Mine are: too much alcohol, sugar or caffeine. Over-exertion can also be a trigger. So I try to avoid all those. Having said that, regular exercise seems to keep migraines at bay. Breathing consciously in through my nose and exhaling through my mouth also seems to help. Weirdly, too much sleep might trigger a migraine too. Perhaps not having enough fresh air in the room I'm sleeping in might also contribute. In general, I try to avoid taking pills or medication, but sometimes I do. Curious to hear about your triggers and remedies! Keep up the good work making videos! Oschi from Germany.

Love it. I spent 10 weeks bike touring Europe in 2022. First bike tour, first time in Europe, zero training. Spent most of the first week thinking WTF was I thinking. By week 2 my body had adjusted, I was getting the hang of Europe and my mindset did a complete 180 from WTF to this is an amazing way to travel. The first week is hard, kudos to you for sticking with it. If you can talk Kaitlan into trying another bike tour, go for longer. It definitely get's easier beyond week 1.

Thankyou for your words of encouragement! And good on you for going 10 weeks! It was deffinatly a hard slog to begin with but we agree, what a fantastic way to travel and see things from a different perspective. We'll deffinatly get back on the bikes one day again!

I love that you biked thru… I need to try the e-bikes. The language barrier would have worried me, but, a beautiful ride. Thank you so much for taking us along on this adventure!!✌️❤️🇺🇸

Great video…just wondering why you chose the southern side (Hungarian side) over the Northern side of the Danube to Komarno.Would offer a suggestion if you tour again would be to raise Kaitlan’s seat to improve her comfort and to stay away from grey shirts and backpack.

I hope you guys had fun. I love this area, Komarno (Komarom in Slovakia) in my birth place, Bratislava was my university town and I lived in Budapest for a while. I love how you took the lack of english as an adventure and not a pain. Langos is a good choice! I am amazed you guys could ride after a langosh. I usually just fall asleep :)

We had a great time even though it was a challenge! We really enjoyed visiting those places, they were very different from each other but was fun transiting to each of them by bike. The langos was great! A nap afterwards would of been ideal haha

Oh my that was a lovey video! Me and my husband want to do this trip too next year in May. Which month did you go in? Did you plan where to stay before going? Thanks 🙏🏽

You will have a great time! We did it in late May, so you could expect similar conditions. It's worth checking what public holidays are on during your schedual. We had a rough idea of where we wanted to get to each day but didn't pre-book anything to stay flexible and didn't have any issues. I think because it was before the summer season it was fine. Goodluck with it!

We were fortunate enough to find a powerpoint at every campsite. Some sites we payed for power, others we found a power point in communal areas. Its important to charge at the end of each day as you really don't want to risk running out of juice... especially on the long segments!

As a 69 year old man, my advice is: try to avoid the main roads as much as possible and enjoy the unpaved roads where you can enjoy the peace and nature that each country has to offer.
