My first excursion into the world of Mel Bonis is the programmatic Femmes de Legende ( Women of Legend)- a series of musical portraits of enigmatic literary heroines. A student of Cesar Franck and a classmate of Claude Debussy at the Paris Conservatory, her musical style is rooted in the late romanticism with elements of emerging Impressionism. Bonis' oeuvre of over 300 pieces ranges from piano and instrumental works to chamber, orchestra and choral music.
1. Melisande by Marianne Stokes (1855-1927)
2. Desdemona by Frederic Leighton (1830-1896)
3. Ophelia by John William Waterhouse (1849-1917)
4. Viviane: Lady of the Lake by Lancelot Speed (1860-1931)
5. Phoebe by Fredric Westin (1782-1862)
6. Dance of Salome by Armand Point (1861-1932)
7. Heracles and Omphale by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)

As a piano fan, i know quite a lot of composers.... I discovered Mélanie Bonis a few Month ago... I like her music a lot, and your playing is full of emotions . There is something very special in the music of all female composers. Mel is my favorite, with Cécile Chaminade beeing the reference....many thanks for your nice video.

thank you, kindly! There are so much superb music by women, and much of it was written by French women, music that I think will become mainstream overtime.

@@thebestclassicals6820 and also you know, Cecile Sauvage, the mother of Messiaen....she wrote not a lot, but beautiful poetries like : " Je suis née au milieu du jour la chair tremblante et l'âme pure mais ni l'homme ni la nature N'ont entendu mon chant d'amour". It is not beautiful ?

Great performance and production. Thanks for including the artwork, as well. Is there a standard order in which to program these pieces if playing them as a set? I had assumed not, since they come from different collections, but was curious.

thank you! this was the order I had in my edition from Furore, it is not chronological but I thought it worked nicely this way. I had a chance to play them as a whole set and just a few movements and they always work well, so it is definitely up to the performer.
