Ep 5. Dinghy Cruising Kingfisher - Tour of Middle Harbour and Fishing in the Tasman Sea

After weeks of repairs and a stint in isolation, Kingfisher gets a well deserved outing. We launch at Roseville Bridge ramp and sail, motor or both all the way out to sea. Some very disappointing fishing, but a glorious day all round.
Hopefully the RAID Sydney group can sail again one day soon, but in the meantime, this video is to help entertain our shore bound sailors.

Great cruise. Even in Tokyo (population around 38 million) we never had a lockdown or restrictions on movement.

I like your style of sailing, very relaxing. You have some great cruising water too. I'm very jealous! I'm just getting back into sailing again myself. I've been introducing my boys slowly and gently. We are based on the River Ouse just outside of York, but plan to head to the Lake District and Scotland when we feel sufficiently confident and competant. Cheers fella and all the best Al

Sounds like you have a good plan there. I have only been in dinghies for the last 18 months- each time we go out I learn something new. Good luck training the crew! Josh

Glorious sailing day. I must say please be careful man. As a very experienced sailor and long term Heron owner I would think carefully before going outside the heads. But well done and thanks for the views. (I just got out of Mosman and back to Melbourne before this last outbreak)

When you calibrate your compass( I'm from Grand Rapids, MI. USA ); How do you do it? I live in the the USA, and We are right on track with the North Magnetic Pole, so Deviation & Compensation for navigation in Lake Michigan is minimal... But in Australia, in your area of navigating; How do you calibrate your compass so you know your true sense of direction when sailing? ( I hope that this is not a dumb question; But I live in the Northern Hemisphere, y'know...)

Hi Tim. Our local maps have mag north deviation printed on them. It can be 8 or more degrees different depending on the year. More generally, on the east coast we can tell where north is by keeping Australia to our left.

Piece a cake Tim. I’ve been teaching navigation 🧭 all my life. Out here in Washington State we use approximately 22 dgs diff .. it’s indicated somewhere on every official map. In Scouts I learned all that early n I knew it before from my dad. I ran a small trap line in deep forest at age 8 yrs. Had no problem n never got lost. Modern people seem to need Fancy GPS’s n they are helpful but there are still the old methods. I even had to learn to use a sextant for Nav back in the 1950’s thru 1990’s. All we has was compass 🧭. Cheers 🥂 Papa J

Calibration is either right on “0” or so many degs East or West of the “0” declination point. During the Vietnam war I flew all over Nam n the difference in heading was set n marked on our navigation air charts.

Hey Fred, look up the Jack Holt ‘Heron’. Many if them were home made in the 60s like this one. If you would like some background on this one, check out my ‘Boat Tour’ video. Take care, Josh.
