Ep. 49: Interview with Phil Keaggy (Part 1)

Музыка

This UpClose and Personal conversation with legendary guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer, Phil Keaggy, is truly one of the greatest I've had since starting Journey to the Stage. Phil has won 7 GMA Dove Awards and has been nominated for multiple Grammys. Our chat is filled with laughs and wonderful storytelling by one of my great musical heroes. We cover lots of ground in Part 1 of this extensive deep dive into the events that have helped shape Phil, both as a man, and as an artist. With several friends stopping by to expresses their affection for Phil and a handful of in-studio performances of some of my favorite songs from Phil's vast catalogue, this is something any Phil Keaggy fan would not want to miss.
The greatest part of this conversation for me, is the friend that I have gained in Phil. He is a thoughtful and considerate friend, who loves God and loves people.

Loved it! Phil has no idea who I am, but he's been a huge part of my life for almost 50 years. I met him in about 1974 and had breakfast with just The Two Of Us (lol) making toast in the Love Inn barn. Anyway, I was already a fan then and he recognized me at many concerts, back then even when I entered the Army and cut my long hair. But as my life progressed I saw him less and I doubt he would remember me at all. But that isn't only how he affected me. I had a rough home life and after getting saved in 1973 I discovered his What a Day album and 2nd Chapter of Acts *with footnotes and also Larry Norman's Bootleg album. I wore the first two out and loved Larry Norman's as well. But I would always put the What A Day album on when I was ready to relax and it soothed my soul. IT WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE! I actually capitalized that by accident but will leave it. Anyway, ever since then, i tried to listen to everything i could by him. Some of my favorite examples of his playing and TONE! were on Paul Clark's Good To Be Home album. The tone he got and rock style he played on the one about the Samaritan, I think it's the second song, and his unbelievable playing on the Unveiling is still some of his best. i know he keeps growing, but that always knocks me out! The main thing, is that the Holy Spirit is so strong in Phil and to have a brother in the Lord with his talent was a huge help to me in a sometimes rocky life. My daughter is named Olivia, partly because of his song to his daughter Olivia, and how my wife and I loved it. Anyway, I know I'm verbose, but I could go on telling how the Lord used him in my life and in the lives of so many other brothers that I know. i'm a guitarist who plays lead and I have a few licks that aren't quite copied from Phil, but they are my take on him. I would learn his licks (those accessible to mortals) and then just develop my own stuff with that influence. Okay, well, sorry so long, but I do want him to know he is beloved among so many of us older hippies who got saved! haha. Take care! PS I was at one or two of the places recorded i and now available in Bandcamp.

Phil probably might not know me by name but spoke with him maybe 9 times and I know many of his personal acquaintances which he would know by name. Anyway, the picture of Rex Allen is who my parents named me after singing to Phil’s older sister with his guitar in hand. No one in my family of 5 is gifted musically but me. I am a songwriter, played and sang for a “Left Behind” movie. I just realized how profound that was to be named after him and end up singer/guitarist. I enjoy playing Phil’s songs as well. Phil big musical impact for me because most Christian artists were not respected as good musicians back then, so Phil helped paved the road for quality. Much loved. So I’m named after him and the woman he is singing to, her younger brother becomes the major Christian music influenced of my life! Sounds like a God set up to me. 😊❤

This was a wonderful way to spend my evening! I have followed Phil since the very early 70s and have seen him at least 20 times in concert. He has played the music of my life. I used Master and the Musician for my wedding reception. One life moment that stands out was in the later part of the 1970s and Phil was playing a concert in San Jose CA. I got there early and had good seats. I was waiting to hear some of the songs I knew but he came out and just started jamming with no singing. I started getting on my critical high horse and thinking he was just being a show off. Then he stopped and walked humbly to the mic and said he was sorry but he had laryngitis and was going to cancel but God laid it on his heart to come bless us with his music. I felt the Holy Spirit just check my critical heart and I have used that moment for nearly 50 years to remind myself to not be quick to judgment. During that same concert he asked if any one knew What a Day and there was a young woman near the front that people were pointing too. He called her up and had her sing, she was nervous at first buy quickly let it rip and he played and did a little back up. I still get goose bumps thinking of that magic moment. Thank you Phil for the music.

Thank you SO much for sharing this great story about Phil. He is a dear brother and I'm thankful for the friendship we have developed. I just recorded and interview with Bryan Duncan that will release in a couple months. Phil contributed to it in a funny and delightful way. He is a gem.

It has been a gift to see, hear and feel the music of Phil Keaggy. Much love and respect for his musicianship and path of his life with the Lord. He truly is inspiring and so his musical projects, as I too have grown up with the music of Glass Harp. Best wishes and God Bless.

I'm loving this two-part series with P.K. I met him some years back at the Dallas Guitar Show through a mutual friend, Phil Love, who has since passed away. I'm a few years older but love the stories of his background and influences. These conversations answer so many questions that I've had about who his influences were. (Mike Bloomfield, etc.) Thanks for sharing. I'm going to Arkansas this coming weekend to meet Phil Love's brother Mark and pick up some vinyl records. He may know Mark. Anyway, thanks again for what you're doing.
