Ep 44 : Refined carbon radiation shielding : Oxygen not included

I don't know why I take on projects like this, I think I just can't help myself. The thought of taking the entire universe with us is just to tempting.

    There has been several space craft with nuclear reactors on them... not RTGs, real reactors. One Crashed in the North West Territories in Canada. Upravlyaemy Sputnik Aktivnyy was the most power of those reactors, generating a whopping 100,000 watts of heat. I believe it had a single control rod, and the core was solid uranium metal. You are partially incorrect regarding the weight of a reactor in space, most of the weight, is shielding, so if you don't care about protecting anything on board from radiation, the reactor is less than 200kg.

  • @jackandersen1262

    @jackandersen1262

    Most designs for nuclear engines and reactors for use in space only partially shield the reactor (often referred to as a shadow shield) where the rest of the craft is inside the shadow created by a small shield, similar in concept to how the refined carbon only protects the areas that the dupes can access.

    @Francis John ... so a few useful tidbits I found while testing: > Buried Utilities: when placing refined carbon rad barriers, _not only_ can you pre-install a piece of 50kW (or other power, although... why?), ribbon wire, insulated gas and liquid pipe, conveyor rail, bridges for each, and even transit tube (plastium to the rescue) in each space for future use... you can *_also_* connect/disconnect/reorient them all at will (except the bridges sadly), remove them entirely (important for the bridges in particular), and even replace them with a similar utility connector (eg, different material, radiant to replace insulated, etc). You can completely future-proof the rad-barrier for just about any alteration you might make, and change or even remove your preparations without risking destroying the carbon chunk. > Inlet/Outlet Ports: as you probably know, you can use the exterior landing pad extensions to add additional fill ports for gas, liquids, and conveyors (they do require the ship storage modules, though). It appears that the exterior ship ports (on the capsule as well as the rocket port loader/unloaders) are all rate limited to 1kg-gas/10kg-liquid. The interior gas ports are also limited to 1kg, but for some reason the interior in-flow (green) liquid ports were coded as 50kg containers, and seem to use the rocket's storage module as a buffer. If you're using the high pressure pipes mod you can actually pull 40kg out of each of these ports. Out-flow is still limited to 10kg per port. The rest isn't a total loss, however; these ports all stack. You can use any number of these ports to multiply your throughput, in or out. Want to drain an ocean? 6 high-pressure ports can move 240kg per second... couple hours is better than a few days. Need to load up an entire asteroid's mass and maintain pace with the Dup's while they're stripping it down? A handful of conveyor lines working in tandem should be able to keep up. Maybe you want to flood a slime planet with chlorine... just build a fumigator ship with 20 or 30 outlets and listen to those germies scream. Because they don't interfere with the door's functionality, you can place up to six of them even if the only ship hull you leave is the door itself. They're also very fast to place so you can simply install them when needed, temporarily replacing low priority or decor buildings while in use. They also act as built in, single tile filters, as well as cross-ship transport (as in no connectors, splitters, or logic circuits required to get from A to B). > Shore Power Ports: these are a mixed bag... the bad news is every power outlet, internal and external, are tied to the same bus... the good news is every power outlet is tied to the same bus. While this means you can't run more than 50kW from the comfort of your space-hab, it _also_ means you can connect your full 50kW power spine from one side of the ship to the other without running any wires through the middle. The only trick is preserving the necessary bits from the original hull. This is a niche tool, but in certain designs could save on a lot of space and negative decor. ... anyway, that's what I found just messing around with things. You can do some really cool stuff with these ships!

    About the reactors on rockets thing: There's an interesting design for a nuclear rocket motor. Rather than mixing and burning a fuel and oxidizer, there's just a working fluid (hydrogen for preference) that's heated by being passed over a nuclear reactor then expelled out the motor. Designs were built and tested on the ground but sadly it's never been used in a 'real' rocket.

    Not to be that guy, but I heard there's a slightly faster way to get our 2545kg refined carbon tiles (although I haven't gotten to testing it myself yet). Apparently phase changed tiles will absorb debris of the same material instead of burying them. Thus, Coal tempshift plates, and 1745kg refined carbon. Once the coal tempshift plates change, they'll absorb the mass of the 1745 refined carbon. I would've done this in my current run, but I was looking to radiation shield above the ceiling in the rocket. I saw dupes can stand above the highest tile you can build in the rocket space, which means you can move debris up there to heat up and get an "extra" row of building space. Not sure if it was worth it but eh.

  • @FrancisJohnYT

    I had heard of that method and also another method of using an Automatic Dispenser to push more mass of the same item into a tile. But in the end I went with the method I figured was the most straight forward.

    Something that could work if looking forward to building this refined carbon wall... If you are starting off a base and you can set-up an industrial sauna; put storage bins with 2545 kg of coal inside your sauna box. It will eat your steam though so be careful.. but as you research into radbolt engines and build one of these your coal will be ready at whatever temp your sauna is working at. Preheat it before you move to this stage.

A run my with 20kg for at least 30 cycles and it's fine, but I improve the tunrbines to 50% more energy.

Ofc you still need to deconstruct the pipes and conduction panels before the state change but generally sounds faster. Or another solution could be to keep dumping steam into the vacuum of the space 2 tiles high so fast that the space exposure doesnt delete it fast enough and it heats up all the coal faster.
