Have this axle on my recently acquired 77 tbird. Sucks it doesn't have a drain plug. Shops have an air tool that can suck the old fluid out but in order to completely drain and clean it, you have to pull it apart.

Hello, thank you for the video. Is it also possible via the screw at the back of the housing, to suck the oil out of the housing ? So without disassembling everything, as in the video?

I moved from one place to another, and stored my 78 Bronco at a friends for the winter. Chose a terrible place to spot it and it was completely flooded in the spring. Now Im trying to see what kind of drive way mechanic I can be. Great video and nice work on that rear end bud.

What an excellent video. Just to be clear, you HAVE to remove both axles in order to get the carrier out? And you have to take the carrier out to be able to clean up and get a new gasket on...Was hoping it wasn't this involved. But it seems like there is no other option. I need to do my 69 Bronco.

I used the bottles with the cut off tip and squirted the fluid in until it was running back out then pugged it.

@@soolegarage Was wondering cause I do not have the room under my Mustang to do what you did. I purchased a 1 gal bottle pump to fit my Lucas bottle. I bought a regular housing gasket and rtv, think I will order the lube locker gasket now instead of RTV and paper gasket. Got all my parts in for a full spool to Limited slip differential. Oh, Love the upside down bucket trick too!!!! Cheers and thanks for your reply sir!!

Did you check the pinion backlash (back and forth play) before you removed the axles? Why didn’t you replace the old pinion oil seal while you had the unit removed? My 72 Ford 9” center unit is still painted a red oxide color. The rear axle housing is black. I m thinking that is factory colors. I don’t my unit has ever been worked on.

Would this be the same process for a 81 bronco with a 9” lsd differential?

My 79 Bronco has a drain plug on my 9 inch rear, it’s 3/4 I believe

Did you try a razor blade scraper?

Did you clean that axle housing and center section before doing this job? Looks very clean for a 74. If so - how did you go about it. I'm interesting in restoring mine, but I'd like to keep in identifying or assembly line marks.

I did pressure wash before dissasembly, and when I had it apart I used a degreaser and a stiff nylon wheel bush to get it cleaned up . Than a few coats of epoxy paint and reassembly.

There isnt drain plug? Weird I have drain plug on my ford ‘59 fairlane it’s underneath it was so greasy and dirty it took me few minutes to find it. Quick question what alan key would you use to open fill plug I am not good with measurements

Yes I agree no drain plug is weird. On your 59 I could be wrong but I think thats the last year they put in the drain plug. Usually a drain plug or the fill plug is removed with a 3/4 or 1/2 inch ratchet or extension end. I have heard on your application that you may have to take a 1/2 inch extension and use a grinder to make it a bit smaller to fit into the opening to make your own tool. Sorry I don't have the measurement you need. If it is an Allen key make sure that all the grease/dirt is cleaned out of there to get and accurate measurement. Good luck.

I have been looking to do the same thing with my 74 Bronco. Where did you find the size of your rear hub. I took a quick look for the numbers on the hub but i didnt see anything.

I will measure mine tomorrow and get back to you. I know ford 9' rear end had either a 10' or 11' brake drum. Do you need to replace yours?

@@soolegarage I’m not sure, I have a rumble back there that sometimes smooths out and is quiet. So I’m not sure if it is the bearings yet or the axel its self. I noticed one of the hubs is dumping break fluid now so it might just have worn out the bearings.

Torque Specifications Ford 9-Inch Torque 3rd Member to Housing Nuts 35 ft lbs Pinion Nut (Solid Spacer) 28-Spline Pinion - 200 ft lbs. 35-Spline Pinion - 250 ft lbs. Axle Retainer Plate Nuts 3/8" T-bolts - 30 ft lbs. 1/2" T-bolts - 50 ft lbs.

I added a drain plug to my 9"

Mines not on a bronco but a little 77 Lincoln with 4 wheel disc and hydro boost.

I am rebuilding a 1971 and noticed the seal leaking. I replaced that successfully (nut was really loose) and noticed how bad the oil looked. Do you have to take out the axles to do the job? Thanks!

Yes you have to pull the axles to remove the center chunk carrier. really not to bad of a job, just time consuming.

Do I need to worry about crush sleeves when changing the Pinion Seal?

If you are taking the differential apart I would recommend replacing the crush sleeve

@@soolegarage nothing currently at the moment, but I’m looking for a project to put my ‘71 bronco out of commission for awhile so I can reupholster my seats. May do this and turn it into a rear disc conversion while I’m at it 🤷‍♂️
