Ep 4 Create a perfect circle, book-matching - Making a Modern Multi-Scale Electro Acoustic Guitar
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Welcome to Crimson Guitars kzread.info... and Ben’s home workshop where he is currently building the modern multi-scale NEBULA 2.0 Guitar. In this episode, Ben begins working on the body by preparing the shape of the template and cutting the book-matched top and back pieces from the gorgeous Burl Maple. He also shows how best to create a perfect circle fretboard inlay.
The original Nebula guitar featured here - • Burning Bridges and an... was so well received that it sold immediately...twice.
In this series, Ben will be building the new and improved Nebula 2.0 as a custom order. • Making a Modern Multi-... Different from the original, this guitar will be a multi-laminate neck, modern fanned fret, semi-hollow, electro-acoustic beauty. This series should be about 10-12(ish) episodes.

I'm working on a headless at the moment, as it's also fretless , bridgeless and pupless...it may be more accurately described as a stick, but I'm working on it.

Those student instruments look amazing. Hopefully we can get back to the "What's on the Bench" series so they can be showcased again.
That inlay is a masterpiece! It's tiny details like this that make the difference between a good piece of work and a great piece of work.
Oooooh man, that ring-inlay! The one ring to rule them all... This guitar deserves an elvish name!
Ben is really engaging to watch. His enthusiasm for the craft and art of building any guitar is just infectious
Beautiful woods, lovely tools (the tiny plane & spokeshave are just fantastic!), precision woodworking and a squirrel- who could ask for more?

The attention to detail on every project, is outstanding. I've learned so much from watching all your videos.
Watching you make a headless guitar will be funzies!
Enjoying this build. I’m extremely happy with this format. Reminds me of the older videos. Why l subscribed.
We love you too, Ben. This guitar is coming together rather nicely. It is a shame that I have to wait another week for the next episode...
re: binding - as you are having to make it out of pieces anyway, could you incorporate fret dots into the binding? small pieces of fretboard material as square dots along it would hide the joints of the maple and use of smaller sections... Whatever you do, it would look gorgeous!
I have been watching your videos since you were originally working out of your shed and I swear you've had the same pencil and pen since then. I'm impressed.
Forged in one piece INCLUDING the spring? Now that is a How it's Made episode I NEED to see.
For the inlay, you could have also mounted it to a waste block and used your lathe with very sharp tools to create both edges of the ring perfectly round.
As usual, some amazing work... and was particularly enjoying the return of the squirrel during the sanding section! (16:55) Beautiful work Ben!
I love the fact that you wing it most of the time. I understand that you have final vision but the process of you getting there is brilliant. Your ideas seem to change throughout the build. But.... the end result has always been exceptional. Bravo sir,.

Hey Anthony, I have mixed feelings about this.. I think I would love to have the entire thing mapped out and then execute it to perfection.. then again that also seems rather boring in the abstract doesn't it? I think the most important thing to me is learning, and trying new things as I go.. anyway, thanks for your support! B
Love this. Very good. Very entertaining. Very educational. Soothes the savage beast of Creativity. Much satisfaction in this series, keep up the great work.

A quick pause at 15:19 in the video, because it dawns on me, on another high-end build, the circle you just made, would be a beautiful "poker chip" on a guitar that called for one.

Hello Flakey :) I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with. B
Always admired Bens watch collection. Listens to Hodinkee radio....nice
I love to tiny planes. Been debating getting some or making some myself.
I dig those shoes.
I would only be happier with it if I were able to do such fine work myself.
If you are going to make the binding out of multiple pieces of the burl, why not make the joints where the side fret markers would be , make the joints a 2mm gap filed with a contrasting wood like padauk? Just an thought. Love the vids.
You definitely have a evil genius look with the hand curl when you look and successfully book match beautiful timbers
I was working on some smaller circle inlays on my latest build more similar to the Raw Series. I found using various diameters of brass tube, chopped down and sharpened, worked as a decent replacement to a multi tool for getting fairly regular shaped circles. I’m not sure what crimson uses to drill those smaller circle inlays on your production guitars but it was a decent option in case you wanted to build another tool for yourself.
A semi precious stone inlaid right in the center of that inlay would make it look like an interesting planet!
Nice, beautiful maple for a kitchen? Yaahh. I love to cook and I love fine cabinetry such beautiful wood probably inspired and helped accentuate the create of some amazingly delicious meals. Perhaps one can only hope it's a kitchen for a Michelin chef. After a career of stainless stee and horrid drab kitchens such a marvelous kitchen would be uplifting.
You do fantastic work!
@CrimsonCustomGuitars

Thank you very much! B
Hello, Ben, thank you for such an interesting content! I think the circles would be easier to make on a lathe. Tighten the circles to the piece of plywood or something with a bolt and put it in a chuck. Shape the outside and then with the parting tool the inside diameter. I am making jewelry from wood and resin and that is the way i am making round earrings.
Looking cool.

Make a fretboard binding out of little strips of alternating colors, each strip as long as the distance between two frets. A sort of marquee pattern, I guess. That should look particularly interesting with the multi-scale thing.
thank you Ben

I'd love to see an organic, flowy looking headless guitar. That Riviera bridge you got looks fantastic. Also, 29:19 you should absolutely use those natural cutouts in the maple as sound-holes and make that matched leaf the top and the whole build semi-hollow. Incredible watching a master at work!

I've not got to the point where you choose where to get the 'ring' from the burl, but I'd use the space where the control cavity cover is, and also make a ring of the same size from the neck material, and a fresh control cavity cover from some of the other neck wood so that you have a congruence of tied materials.
23:00 feel like that bit was for Dan. How many times did he glue his eye shut on the 3 month course? 2, 3 times?
Don't look now, Ben, but I think there might be a squirrel in your tool rack!
oh! i like that watch.
Lordy, enough adverts this time for it to have been broadcast on Sky. Still awe inspiring though to see a master craftsman at work.
As always an amazing video, Ben 😁 Honestly the original Nebula is one of my favourite guitars you've ever built so 2.0 greatly excites me 😁 now that you've released the new finish products I don't suppose you could do a video on them even if it is on the extras channel? Especially excited about the rub on lacquer 😁 I have a tin of Northwest Guitars rub on stuff on my desk that I think I will need to renconsider using with this new development. The lathe was my first thought but not enough people have access to one so I wanted to do something a bit simpler this time.. B
Aw Ben, why you gotta show me cool tools like that (ok, the little plane and the dividers...)? I have an old Spofford pattern brace, where the entire unit, including the split chuck to accept the bit, is forged from a single piece of steel. The rosewood knob is attached with a ring on the bottom, and the side handle is 2 pieces of rosewood held together with pewter rings. Love that stuff!!
Ooft Ben that circle is nice... I'd love it if you could add the rest of the inlay markers with much smaller peices... 3rd 5th 7th fret markers. It occurred to me the other day the importance of atleast side dot inlays, it's a sutble importance that we overlook, until we actually are playing it 😅 Looking great though👍 Some abalone or gemstone inlays might add a something new and different 🤔 adding to that nebula planetary vibe
