Ep 38: Philippines to Canada Pet Travel | Tips, Documents & Experiences | Got Left Behind by plane
Hello! Just a few weeks ago, we landed in Canada from the Philippines (Davao) with our three cats. Traveling with pets to Canada is straightforward when it comes to the required documents, which you can find in the Canadian Government website:
inspection.canada.ca/importin....
However, getting your pets out of the Philippines can be tricky, especially if you're not departing from Manila. Here are the documents and optional items we prepared and brought for our pet travel:
1. Veterinary Health Certificate: Your local vet will issue this certificate, which is valid for only three days. Your pets need to undergo an examination for this.
2. Vaccine Certificate: Make sure your vet provides a valid and updated certificate with rabies shots, including serial numbers.
3. Export Permit: The Bureau of Animal Industry issues this permit. We had to obtain it twice since our connecting flight to Canada was from Manila BAI. However, upon arrival at NAIA, the Philippine Airlines special handling team required us to go to the BAI again (located within the same terminal) to have the document stamped and check the cats. This document is generally required when your pet travels out of the country.
4. Shipping Permit: You can download this permit online after filling out forms and uploading necessary files. Although this was a last-minute requirement for us since we weren't aware of it, local airlines in the Philippines may request it for domestic travel. Most sources on the internet focus on flights from NAIA to international destinations, so this document isn't mentioned widely. It's better to be safe and have it prepared, even if it wasn't asked for on our flight.
5. Carriers: Make sure to use leak-proof kennels. Zip-tied on the sides. Your pets should be able to stand and turn around inside.
Optional:
1. Microchip (optional): You can obtain a microchip from your vet. While Canada doesn't explicitly require it, our local airlines in the Philippines might ask for it. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
2. Airtags (optional): These are additional tracking measures you can use for your pets.

1. Philippine Airlines (PAL) - Local Shipping: Php 2000 per cat
2. Philippine Airlines (PAL) - International: 400 USD per cat (Please note that their website stated it was 200 USD each, but we had to pay double.)
3. Air Canada (domestic): 50 CAD per cat (please verify the exact amount)
4. Document fees

Thanks for this! Hopefully not much of change will happen next year as we also plan on doing this with our cats. I've heard Korean Air and Air Canada allows cats inside the cabin... Planning on getting PAL (CGY To MNL) > Korean Air (Vancouver) > Air Canada (Edmonton).

Our connecting flight to Winnipeg from YVR is Air Canada but didn't get to ask if they allow pets in the cabin. That's good to hear though at least you'll be less worried. Hope you have a stress-free flight!

In my experience, the airlines were more fussy than the borders inspection (my YVR to WPG flight being the most meticulous followed by PAL flight). Just make sure you declare them properly and hand everything document you have of your pets to the officer in charge. I encountered a few people whose pets were held and they were fined for not declaring them properly. It’s 400USD per pet but we paid in peso.

Hello! Yes super important talaga you coordinate with them. In our case we called 3x. Upon booking, after it’s booked, then 24-48hours before flight. Hope you and your cats will have an stress-free flight! 🙏

@@FrancisDeeSalvador I’ve been looking for this policy but can’t find it online anymore. Basta I remember it should be big enough for them to move and stand. Just to be safe, maybe try calling their special handling department. Not all of them are thorough so make sure to have the guidelines ready in case they say otherwise. I’ll get back to you when I find the link!

hello! anti-rabies vaccine and I believe 4-in-1 ito (FCV, FVR, FPLV, Chlamydia). When we landed YVR we declared (in the machine thing) that we brought live animals; a form will be printed. After claiming the baggage and going through immigration, you need to go through CBSA (an office where you give your declaration form the one printed out from the machine. They didn’t ask for the BAI permit or anything but we handed everything to the officer: the printed declaration form, BAI permit, vaccine certificates, vet certificates. Then the officer thanked us for “declaring them properly”. Yung iba kasi may fine kasi hindi na declare properly yung pets nila. In my experience, hindi sila masyado specific sa other vaccines. Yung rabies lang dapat valid.

A lot of apartments are pet friendly but most of them only allow 2 pets. In our case we contacted the resident manager and asked them directly.

Hi, What did you tell your local vet in getting a Veterinary Health Certificate? I was turned down by my local vet because they said that there is a specific requirements for getting a Vet Health Certificate and I should research for it first. I got confused.

Hi! Some vet are not knowledgeable about the requirements that’s why they tell you to research about it. Each country has different guidelines (Canada is the most straightforward i.e. no rabies titer needed as long has you have the valid vaccine records). To be sure, just show the vet the link from CIC (the one in the description box).

@@arcelestrella4599 i’m not sure in LAX as our layover is in YVR. Yes they were dropped off by the special handling team but it took longer than we expected (about an hour or so after we claimed all our baggage).

How many pets are allowed per passenger to travel with Philippines airlines from Mnl to Canada?? I called the airlines earlier but they told me only 1 pet per passenger 😢

Hello! I believe that that policy is only applicable if the pet is in cabin with you? Have you tried calling specifically the special handling department of the airline? Maybe they assumed your pet will be with you in the cabin? I noticed the regular customer support reps don’t always know some of these policies.

@@xiaoness-vlog they don’t actually have a pet in cabin option. As an excess baggage only. Then i have informed that they can only accommodate 1pet per passenger 😢

@@alonabellepadernal8095 I think only if you have service dogs you’re allowed to have one pet with you in the cabin. but if you check them in, I don’t think the 1:1 policy applies? because 3 of them were checked in as my excess baggage (they didn’t ask how many of us were traveling in relation to the number of pets). I’ve also messaged someone from a facebook group before who brought 4 dogs with them even though there were only 2 of them traveling.
