    Yes ported can get lower but the phase shift is extreme at the Port. Sealed sub phase shift is gradual. Proper loading will bring the deep base up or you can overdrive the sub if it has a good Xmax.

    Love all your videos. I do have a question about winisd. Wondering why you don't enter the value for the series resistance after you added the power? When I put it to 4 ohms it really changes the graph. I don't understand why it is left at .1 ohms. Your feedback will be much appreciated.

    I'm following along your video and using UM18-22 (two enclosures / one 18 per enclosure) for my project. I have available space to accommodate enclosures larger than the Standard Full Marty with the space behind my AT screen. Any reason to not design a huge box vs. the 11 ft³ Full Marty? Playing with WinISD: ex. 11 ft³ Full Marty volume, tuning frequency @ 14.43 Hz, signal 1,000 watts - I'm configuring it with a square vent 2.5"x22" and the velocity is almost off the chart (62 ft/s at 14.4 Hz). I'm running iterations of vent height to drop the velocity, but the vent length becomes too long (+58"). Can you recommend changes that will bring this inline with your recommendation of ≤ 30 ft/s. What is the vent area & vent length for the Full Marty and what are Box dimensions for a FM? Curious how that vent is configured in a FM. I understand there are some 'rules of thumb' for driver placement in the enclosure relative to the external port and port opening inside the enclosure relative to adjacent surfaces. Can you touch on this? Thanks for putting this together. This is exactly what I needed to get working on this project. Wife getting tired of seeing drivers sitting in their box. :-)

    Thank you for the tutorial. I downloaded the program, and put in every parameter that you did, but my cone excursion reading, and rear port air velocity is off the chart. Also I don't get hz, and db on the readings. I get rel hz and rel db. I think I need to reload the program because I'm getting completely different readings than you did.

    Great tutorial. I like how you discuss the various trade offs for different properties. You mentioned box stuffing. Is that more of a trial and error thing or can you calculate how much stuffing to use. Do you always use stuffing? Will you discuss adding damping material to take care of box standing waves or is that just for speakers? Thanks professor!

  • @hometheatergurus

    @hometheatergurus

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah I glad you brought that up. We don't have standing waves because our subwoofer frequencies are so much larger than the enclosure but we still line with insulation anyways. With sealed we lightly stuff not line. With sealed There's a loose rule that every pound of fill increases the enclose by 25 percent so you could guesstimate it by modeling the box in winisd with that in mind.

    Check out the videos on sub setup. We keep everything set to small so we have a predictable sub response that's similar seat to seat. If we allow the center to have an independent sub it will trash the modal response when information is present in that channel and not also present in the rest of the subs.

    If you entered the info correctly then you're good to go. Some drivers need larger cabs than others. 150 is large but you may be able to dial it down a little and still get a good response from it. The Um12 would work well in a box that size tuned to 18hz or so. As you go smaller you may need to raise the tune a little to keep the raw response in check.

    True but not every driver is there and getting it from a manufacturer has less room for error and it literally takes 1 minute to load parameters. It's also much simpler for those learning to do it manually. If they ever need to load a driver they can't find a file for no problem as they aren't relying on another site to supply them with a file. I've never once used that site as I just prefer to load them myself as well. But it's definitely an option.

  • @hometheatergurus

    Everytime you double subs from 1 to 2, 2 to 4 etc you can gain 6db of headroom if they're all the same and all the same power on tap. Now that's if you could get a perfect summation which you won't. If you're getting 4db per doubling you're doing good. The um 12s in a well designed box are very impressive. I've had people I've designed subs for that also had full Marty's and some have commented they would never have built the Marty's if they'd built the um12 subs first. It depends on goals and how important space is to you. My last theater had subs I designed similar to full Marty's but they were hidden. For my living room I'd never use subs that were physically that large. In my next house which were building I plan to use subs similar to what I designed in the video. As for the HPF yes you'll need one however it won't be set at the tuning frequency as the repsonse will begin to drop above where it's set as it's a slope. I cover this an explain how to set it in ep 7.

I kinda feel the chest kick video kinda ignored that while demand isn't as high below the peaks we saw its still important. I wish I could easily go back and just clarify that. I'm gonna disagree that Dayton under spec their subs. Xmax is the linear maximum of the coil after that it gets unlinear. That's why there also xmach / xlim. This is where the cone hits the back of the magnet and damage can occur. Xmax is calculated so there is not over specking or under specking. On the filter to protect the driver from frequencies under port tuning you will lose dbs because the filter is not a wall, the mini dsp can do a max of 24db if i'm not mistaken, so you will lose more db in the lower frequencies where the port it. We don't know how much the room will help so it's a consideration when doing a design like you did with that hump. You can also add those filters in winisd to see how much it will affect your frequency.

Unless you are accounting for room gain which you approximately need a room with it’s longest dimension smaller than 21 feet for room gain to start around 27Hz.

That was sooo beneficial 08:56 . . . no it's not . . .that's how all subs should be sized. Go as big as your room allows, the WAF should be secondary, HAHAHA!

    Why design around RMS power handling and not Max? And shouldnt that be the AMP power and not the speaker power?

  • @hometheatergurus

    @hometheatergurus

    4 жыл бұрын

    The RMS is used in Winisd to set where xmax occurs. This is shown in winisd. You will not have clean power at max power as more distortion is present beyond xmax. Speakers don't have power as they need an Amp to supply it. The power specs are to show their thermal and mechanical limits. We're modeling a driver not an Amp so all that's important is the drivers specs. We apply simulated Power (Amp power) in winisd to see xmax and port velocity. You can apply more power in winisd which I do in the video but you exceed xmax and port velocity increases and so does distortion.

    Why build this instead of 18 UM in sealed box, similar size box, way more output everywhere even at the UM 12 tuning and you could take advantage of available room gain.

    Because it's for open rooms where we have little room gain and I want to offer something easy to drive that can play quite loud on little power. I've had quite a high demand to design similar subs for guys over the last few years. In my upcoming dedicated theater room I'll be using sealed 18s but of course power to push them is substantially higher so the cost is much higher.

    Home Theater Gurus will you use boosting to make the subs flat or depend and room gain? With room small enough and few sealed 18s you can reach down to 5Hz

  • @hometheatergurus

    @hometheatergurus

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@gsggsghshshs7192 have you watched the video.? No boosting is needed as these have a natural f3 of 16.5 hz with no baked in filters to boost. Most will have too much output with room gain and need to cut. They'll be very easy to drive and have impressive output. Now they aren't going to outperform a full Marty down low by any means but they're aren't meant to. Just like you wouldn't expect a pb4000 to outperform a pb16. Yep in sealed room or with enough drivers sealed can have great output quite low. That's why I'm going with them in my dedicated room.

    @@gsggsghshshs7192 yes they'll need some. When you order sealed from svs, Seaton, jtr they are boosting or have amps with adjustable boost settings. You'll need a house curve so even if in room you managed a flat response with room gain you'll still need boosting for the house curve. So yes I expect to need some good power. I'll be using two of these and be running two 18 modules per Amp. Total of 4 18s. www.speakerpower.net/store/p28/SP1-4000-HT.html
