Ep.3: Creating a Lightweight Bed Platform for Pop-Up Truck Camper

Building a lightweight, yet strong truck camper was a fun exercise in DIY engineering. Last video, we completed the beams for the frame of the bed platform that extends over the truck cab. In this video, we work on building out the platform for the bed and end up with a place to sit over the truck cab.
In this video, I also mention the mounting clamps I purchased for this build on my Toyota Tacoma. If you are interested in something similar, here is a link to the mounting clamps on Amazon. (*I am an Amazon affiliate and may earn with qualifying purchases.)

    Imagine what you hugs could produce if you had a cnc type tool at your disposal I think there's a company that would "sponsor " a mention n and visual use of machine 🤔

    For honey combing the wood for weight savings yet retains its strength. Oh and good job

    That would be a neat tool to use. I'd love to be able to honeycomb the wood.

    Iv been speed watching, you seem to have done a good job. Did you keep track of your total cost of your build, total time and weight of camper?

  • @WanderwithKate

    Yes, I did. I made a couple of short videos with the total weight and cost if your interested. Here's the link to those videos: kzread.info/head/PLFYcffNUUBj5I9LWDDFP47xSn-JphH5nJ&si=a0nNkw6jd5rVzweE I spent about 2 months building. The first month, I just built on weekends. The 2nd month, I worked on something most days. But unfortunately, I didn't record the total hours it took.

    Maybe I missed it, but for the plywood, what is the type and thickness that is used through out your build?

  • @WanderwithKate

    @WanderwithKate

    Good question. Sorry if I missed mentioning the thickness. Most of the plywood was 1/4 inch thick birch plywood. For the base of the bed platform that extends over the truck cab and would hold my weight while sleeping, we used a 1/2 inch plywood. And then the extra panels for reinforcement of the bed platform (that we added later) were 1/4 inch plywood again.

    Did you rip the 2x4 bed rail piece a little to better accept the clamp?

    Sorry about all the comments about the clamps, it’s just been the most difficult thing for me to conceptualize before I full design and implement my build 😅 when I crank mine, which are the ones I ordered from your link, the L bracket is still a good 1/2” into the threads 5:32

    My 2x4s have been planed down at this point, so they are thinner then a standard board straight from the store. Then to give myself more overlap with the clamps I did make little groves in the board to seat the clamp into. You can see this in Ep. 5 at 1:54. Hope that helps!
