Ep. 272 Big John Harte Former Head of Security for KISS Shares His Stories

Музыка

Episode 272, March 6, 2018. This week we are joined by the legend, Big John Harte! Big John was head of KISS security and is famous for being the man who would stick his hand in the face of photographers trying to take pictures of KISS without makeup. Of course John did much, much more than making sure nobody took a picture of KISS out of makeup and we talk with him about all of the various things he did for KISS. John also talks about his soon to be released autobiography and the Pledgemusic.com campaign he launched and the many cool rewards you can purchase.
When it comes to celebrity bodyguards, few fill the heart and imagination like Big John Harte. Plucked by fate from obscurity, Big John’s brooding presence, wry sense of humor, and gentle giant image is the stuff of legends.
Big John Harte, protector of Rock Gods: Kiss, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Prince and more! The now-classic images of this hulking wrestler-like mustachioed man with his giant hands shielding an unmasked Kiss member are indelibly etched into your brain. It’s symbolic of the important role Big John played throughout the years - from the heady, narcissistic 70s til today - creating a human barrier between the public and some of our favorite stars. It would be hard to think of the glory days of Rock and Heavy Metal without him.
You know the lore, now find out where and how it all began…

Here’s my experience with Big John Hart... It was on the Dynasty Tour in Cleveland, my sister, her boyfriend and I arrived early in the day to Richfield Colosseum in hopes to get a glance of the band without makeup. We were standing around the ramp leading into the colosseum since we assumed Kiss would enter there. After a few hours of waiting around a black limo was headed towards us and it went down the ramp as we expected. I ran along the side of the car keeping up with it and my sisters boyfriend was halfway down the ramp with his camera ready... The limo door opens up and I’m just a few feet from Big John, he yells to my sisters boyfriend in a LOUD assertive voice “if you take one picture I’ll make you eat that camera” he lowered the camera in fear and held it behind himself. Meanwhile Paul and Ace got out of the limo without makeup and I just froze...here I am just a few steps from my heroes and I watch them walk bye. It was only after they walked past me that I could speak, I said “oh my god it’s Ace”. I still want to go back in time and punch my 15 year old self for freezing. That was my experience with Big John...I’ll never forget it.

Tell you how old I am. I remember the pic of him hiding Paul's face getting out of the car. I had a magazine with that pic in it. I had stack and stacks of kiss magazines. Posters all over my wall. I had the Kiss makeup kit. I had the original 8 track of their first album WITHOUT Kissin Time on it.

I enjoyed the interview because he clearly remembers those days, unlike some other guests who don't remember much, or pretend to remember. Back in the day, I read that Gene and Paul wanted him out because he "partied" with Peter and Ace, which is not really something you want your security detail to do.

I wish they had asked Big John about his physical training? What kind of martial arts training did he have? Did he work out when on the road? Lift weights? Spar? What type of weapon(s) did he carry? Did he interact with local law enforcement as part of his advance work? Did he and the other bodyguards train together? Did Paul Stanley do any workouts with him or other bodyguards?

Thanks to Big John Harte I had all access backstage passes to multiple concerts in Germany during the Powerslave tour. I had originally met John in 1984 during the Piece of Mind tour . Michael Shenker Group opened that show. I was in the US Army then stationed by Wurzburg, Germany. I went to the show with my girlfriend and her sister and her sisters friend. We were in the front against the rail when I asked John for a drumstick from Nicko. He returned with one and offered me 3 backstage passes if the two girls went into the after concert showers with IM. Which they did. The girls were 16 yo. I saw the polaroid's, no cell phone cameras back then. It was porn for sure . Some of these concerts in Germany were held in gymnasiums so there were lockers and showers backstage. The following year I saw IM in that same venue and saw John Harte again. Motley Crue opened the show and the next 3 that I saw each time I brought more of my friends. All access backstage passes for all of us . I brought 6 people with me and John hooked us all up. Big John Hart was IM Head of Security. I guess he liked the idea that i was in the Army or else good thing I had 3 teenage girls with each time.

surprised no one has answered your question yet. It's a reference to Billboard magazine charts. Billboard would chart weekly music sales and radio airplay, I'm not sure how they calculated the two to make their charts and I don't know how Billboard charts look now but they used to list the top 100 singles, top 100 albums, and do charts for country, r&b, gospel, classical, etc. and also a top 200 for albums. "With a bullet" would mean a song or album was rising from week to week on the charts, although I don't actually remember seeing a billboard chart using a symbol of a bullet, maybe it was another publication that used bullets. Seems to me they might have a circle or for a time they would use a star to indicate a song moving up the charts. I don't think they would use a symbol to indicate an album that was falling but John is making his own joke that "Elder" never got very far up the charts and quickly disappeared from the charts.

It’s great to listen to the former body guard give his bird’s eye view of what the inner workings of the band Kiss. I especially enjoy the guest who come on and share their experience with Vinnie Vincent. No one has a good view of Vinnie overall. They confirm what a crappy personality Vinnie has. All the way down to his Pink feathered ear rings. V V

Big John is great! Clear memory and to the point. Things started unravelling aeound 1 hr mark. Tangents into the middle east and personal opinions about right wing religious extremism- stay focused Goddamnit. Big John isn't here to lament about a host's upbringing. Keep it the bands and the music.

As far as I can tell, he finished the book along with tons of interviews and wasn't able to get it out because of the lowlife scumbags at Pledge Music.
