As a minimalist I’m saving so much money I almost can’t stand myself, that’s why I’m watching this video lying down (Why stand? Why even sit upright?). I’ve never been happier. At this rate I will definitely be retiring early. God’s willing I will be out of the rat race in 8 years. I’m living off 1/4 of my after tax income. Materialistic people can work themselves into the graveyard...that WILL NOT be my fate.

Ryan really hit the nail on the head when he talked about the feeling of being inadequate. I am impressed with how he is able to express himself in a way I can relate to. Thank you.

Wow, never heard of Peter before but what an insightful, smart human being! I have been taunted by anxiety and intrusive thoughts for many years. Seeing this as a symptom of our freedom and the potential possibilities (which are infinite) is so helpful. Thank you Peter!

I used to buy loads of crap online just to have something new in my life but Minimalists made me rethink and I'm saving lots of money now I can even cut my shifts at work and have more time for things that matter! It made me realise how much happiness I get from simply having more free time to do my own thing.

Regarding the comment on Emma’s question: ‘Essential beauty’ ...yas! That really resonates with me. I have a creative soul; currently expressed through fabric and quilted works. That creative process - the tension, the learning and discovery of new beauty in my work, just may be part of where my journey, my experience of lack resides... I may be way off, but this is what struck a chord for me in your excellent discussion on this topic.

Our society places such a heavy emphasis on materialism and consumerism that it causes internal pain to many when they feel they are "lacking". What is lacking?, it is only a state of being that is uncomfortable to some, when they feel they do not have what society is telling them they must have. I suggest learning to live with less, enjoying it and recognizing that, as a human being, special and unique, you are enough. Comforts will come and go, furniture and clothing are changed and lifestyles are altered, but learning to be at peace with yourself, being comfortable in your own skin will help to calm the mind and help you feel satisfied with what you have or do not have. Do not, as the old expression goes " keep up with the Joan's" just live minimally and be complete within and without.

I have a son and he somehow had a fear of being poor, or being seen by others as poor. I don’t know where that came from, because we are not poor. We never have had a lack of anything, never hungry, always food, always a roof over our heads, and even more than that, we live in relative luxery. But i do thriftshop, i don’t like being wasteful. So sometimes i would buy second hand clothes for him (and myself btw) and he hated that, dispite him liking the clothes. Somehow having second hand clothes equalled being poor, to my son anyway. So what i told him was: when you buy a new shirt, you wear it, wash it and then...it is no longer new...so basically all your clothes right now are second hand, whether we bought it new or second hand to begin with.... That one idea of ‘new’ changed everything with him... Also we talked about ‘value’ vs ‘worth’. That, i think, got to the root of his fear... Thank you for this podcast...you guys are amazing!

Wow! Thank you for this podcast! Minimalism has allowed me to have a lot of introspection, but this was a whole new level! I was a little confused at first, but I kept with it and was rewarded with a solid "ah ha" moment, and with that said, I'm going to head over to hear the rest of it. High-five, guys!

Hey Josh and Ryan, great points in this podcast! Thanks to Peter Rollins for bringing his perspective as well. JOMO is a new term I think I will enjoy using. I experienced some true JOMO this past weekend while out camping, because I was outside of cell service and work couldn't reach me no matter how hard it tried. I missed out on some sales and couldn't be happier about that.

Hi I’m the same as this lady. So- I decorate in a neutral colour. And like u say I change colours of throws and curtains. U can also change someone else’s decor. Maybe a small room (so you don’t resent any time and back ache😆)- u can enjoy seeing the joy a friend feels and the experience of changing their room. And- they do the spending on the materials, you then also fulfil the value of spending time with dear friends and family 😃 thanks for your wonderful podcasts. 😉😁👏🙌🌸✌️✨🤩xx

I feel really strongly like a huge component of consumerism is a lack of healthy creative outlet. The American capitalist system strongly encourages us- if not grooms us- to consume to express ourselves and define our identity. What would happen if we funded the arts (music, fine arts, dance, etc) and groomed children to express themselves through arts instead? We’d be industrious instead of consumerist.

Notes 21 minutes in: For the seemingly When of unconscious drives that become desire there is with that the seeming problematic to the extent of unconsciousness of what's going on by the whom it may concern. For the Taking inventory of what's manifested there is with that possible clues once recognizing that which is holding sway may have no problem wiping the floor with that which is concerned. For the dealing of the messes there is with that je ne sais quoi accountability yet release of responsibility by the so called one put on point. For the carry forward of the living meat pan interactions there is with that the retroacting completion of signifier breadcrumbs manifested that point to a criss cross foot hold of already here more or less with zig zags by the lack w/o the lack on-ness of the one on point. I.E. fighting wo fighting. Directing wo directing. Hands on wo hands on.

I love how Josh smirks every time he calls us simpletons and how excited Peter got to to talk about free will/predetermined destiny 😂 This episode just explained what had deemed an existential crisis I’m currently experiencing - maximal here I come! Also - the bit about desire at the end. It’s 2020 and I’m still rocking the iphone5s. Every time there is a software update it packs up and slows down but over time continues to function as normal. I keep thinking I should buy a new one but I’m not on contract to be in control of my monthly spending, iPhones can be bought second hand from giffgaff but they’re £500+ for a newest version that would be worth while buying because of software updates...really, I love the 5s and will probably run it into the ground before switching to a different brand. I was always anti apple because they exploit people innate desires and now duping people into buying the latest version for £1k is just ridiculous. My 5s cost me £250 from giffgaff and I rue the day it gives up on me! - blahblahblah... anyway. Great episode as always! Love Peter Rollins
