Ep 131: Bonavista Puffins & Twillingate Icebergs in Newfoundland
EDIT: I mentioned in this video that I thought cod fish was being imported into Newfoundland since the 1992 embargo. A few commenters let me know that this is not correct, and that cod is still fished locally, although in smaller numbers. Thanks for the correction!
This week we're venturing out of St. John's into rural Newfoundland. We visit the only puffin colony where you can walk right up to the birds! What a magical experience. We thought we were past iceberg season, but were surprised by some beautiful icebergs off the Twillingate coast. We are loving our exploration of The Rock! BTW, you’ll always find links to the places and resources referenced in our videos in the description below! ⬇️

How fortunate to see icebergs and puffins. You make planning our trip for next summer much easier. Thanks.

Excellent, I'm glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks! Nice video, we were just in Newfoundland and Labrador for 5 weeks. I think we were in Elliston/ Bona Vista/ Twillingate a few weeks before you. There were lupines everywhere and the icebergs were further out to sea. We felt we barely saw the tip of the iceberg of what Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer. I think we were 3-4 days in each place, and definitely needed longer. Hope to get back for several months next year!
What a great video! How beautiful are the little towns of Newfoundland and Labrador! I'm from St. John's and, even being a local, I am delighted every time I see the cutest little puffins, and I'm absolutely THRILLED, every single time, when I find an iceberg! You were most fortunate, indeed, to have experienced both puffins and numerous icebergs in one trip! By the way, since you didn't specifically say so in your vlog, I thought I'd bring to your attention that the town of Bonavista is believed to be the landing place of explorer Giovanni Caboto (a.k.a. John Cabot) in 1497! That's just five years after Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492. Of course, that was almost 500 years after the arrival/temporary settlement of the first Europeans in North America when the Vikings arrived at our L'Anse Aux Meadows, which I understand you cover in your next video. Obviously, in addition to our natural beauty, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has a lot to offer those interested in history! Glad you've enjoyed your visit to the island portion of our province!

Thanks for that info about John Cabot! We are looking forward to a future trip of driving the Trans Labrador Highway with our RV and coming back to Newfoundland. Everything about that trip seemed magical. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you.
Excellent vlog - thanks for sharing! Icebergs and puffins are interesting; villages are so picturesque.

Very cool! Be sure to explore outside of St. John’s if you can!
New subscriber here! You have an awesome channel. I found you when researching Newfoundland. We are planning to take our 24' Class C motorhome. I saw your video about Magnolia in Waco. We live about 45 min.from there. If you could say the date in the video, that would be icing on the cake. Thanks so much.

Awesome content. Glad you enjoyed your visit to our beautiful province. There’s no place I’d rather live than right here in Newfoundland. God bless!!

From Bonavista here! Glad you enjoyed your time here :-) here's a newfie tip for you! It's not pronounced Newfoundlund. Say like you'd say the word "understand" Newfoundland!

Great tip, thanks for watching!
Looks like a beautiful place to visit.
You really feel like taking a plane and stopping in Newfoundland for a while; the food must be amazing, especially since I'm a seafood enthusiast. Thank you for introducing us to this less-traveled part of the world.

It was magical!
The only thing more beautiful than the scenery in Newfoundland is its people.
Thank you for your video.

Welcome to the channel! We saw the puffins in mid July 2023. We are going to be making our first RV trip to Alberta this spring, visiting friends near Calgary!
Cod is not being imported from other countries. Cod is still fished in Newfoundland. There are limits on what people are allowed to catch. There is a food fishery during specific weeks of the year. The cod in the restaurants is local and not imported.

Oh, interesting. When I googled it, I read that most cod these days was imported. Thanks for the correction!

We LOVE Great Big Sea, saw them in concert in New York State years ago. We even visited Alan Doyle's hometown when we were in St John's :) Thanks for watching!
Check out Ron Hynes,Sonny's dream, or Great Big Sea, if you want Newfie music.
I want to go to there.

Such a beautiful area! Thanks for watching :)
I’m going to be straight forward here . I do enjoy your videos . But calling it Newfoundland Island is absolutely ridiculous . You are taking people on tours to places you aren’t from . I get the interest I truly do . But it’s Newfoundland not newfinlind , which is how you are pronouncing it

Their saying it almost perfect. Up here it is pronounced Noof-n- land. The faster you say it the better.
