Ep 12. Top Tips for Narrowboat Insulation

Insulating your Narrowboat can be made easier by following some top tips. Bespoke narrowboat builders are always looking to innovate. I don't think this is new, but, it took me longer to tidy up, than it did to remove the spray foam from the batons! I learnt a lot, again. I talk through the options of spay foam and other types of insulation.

I have been watching your build from the beginning Chris and its coming along very nicely. As I have said to other Narrowboat vloggers, I have never owned a boat and only stepped foot on one recently for about 5 minutes, so to see how one is build from the plates up is interesting. Thank you for sharing.

I think it has an effect on The Fit Out Pontoon too. While I believe their work is outstanding, to have their work shown on film can present a risk. I do like to keep on top of the project in an understanding way, but I’m mindful of presenting myself as being overly difficult for them. Fine lines in getting the best content for me but not being in the way. Thanks for watching and your support.

Now I understand why you were taping up last week. That foam is horrible stuff to work with, no matter how careful you are, there’s always a horrible sticky mess to deal with afterwards,. The foam man deserves a king’s ransom for doing that job. I can well imagine it taking days to remove the stuff off battens - and making a real mess of the battens in the process - when the masking process is less than perfect. It’s really satisfying to watch all the stages of the build. Another brilliant video, Chris. Just looking at that foam makes you feel warm, but I get what you kept saying about patching up any missed areas, nooks or crannies: the water vapour in the air will seek out the cold spots like bees finding nectar and will pool and sit there. And, like when the nectar’s concentrated in one tiny area,, with the bees all fighting to get at it, any cold-bridge spots would cause you big problems with corrosion and wood rot. It’s the 7 Ps again!

  • @chrismears-inslowtime

Thanks Martin. Mentioned the Ps in a previous comment today. But it's absolutely correct. More so in this case where if you miss something like condensation and not filling the gaps with foam, will have a horrendous effect. As you know, never straight away, but in years to come when the damage is much worse. Foam fella was great. Have a great New Year.

I have watched numerous vlogs where boaters have had their boats spray foamed then spent weeks cursing and swearing chipping it back off the batons with scrapers and multi tools. Hi Lee and Ali. I’m pleased the videos are of some use. I’ve looked at this weeks video where I discuss briefly the importance of design and battening out the boat and how it can save time and I think money. To answer your question. There are batons all around the side hatch as when that was boarded on the wall, it gave Dom the freedom to put screws where needed. And it was easy to judge. I think Ep 17 could be of use. If you want some hot gen, let me know and I’ll ask the lads. Baton out before spray foam. It’s easier. Also double tape the batons before hand. The foam protects the wood form rotting as well.

Try not to listen to me…..well do so but watch what is behind me. Believe or not, some of the time it is filmed with the background in mind to assist DIY fit outs.
