Ben-I wanted to drop you a thank you note. I lost my Dad on April 19th. He loved woodworking. He wasnt very good, but that didnt stop him from doing. He and I created some things together, such as my coffee bar in my office. I wanted to say thank you for giving me somewhere to come, enjoy the creativity and beauty of woodworking, and remember him without the sadness of missing him.
One of the things I appreciate about this channel is that Ben understands that the "best way" is not the "only way" to do things. Teaching alternative solutions to common problems is extremely valuable.
You are a master of your craft and an expert in engaging your audience. your videos are never boring, I find them as a mix of asmr, educational, and inspirational. I could sit for hours and watch you find that neck inside that block of wood. Thank you!
Good points on making a neck at 36:55. I was quite nervous about making my first neck, but it's honestly not that bad. There are more steps, maybe a bit more planning, but it's not as complicated as it may seem to a first time builder.
Kauri's ease of shaping is legendary. It was commonly used for making casting patterns in foundries and engineering works.
For the love of God, please please finish the hand tools only build ! I so wanna hear how it sounds.😊😊😊

The straight edge of GLORY!.
completely agree with you Ben, learn a new bit on each build until you find you are making it all. It also then opens the creative horizons!
I love carving the next. It’s always the most optimistic part of the build. I do it all with a rasp.
Been waiting Ben! My Saturday mornings are complete again 😂. Love to watch your work.
Facetinating stuff! It's always good to see the Shinto rasp in action, and of course some expert chiselling too. I'm also an inveterate procrastinator or, as I like to think of it, carefully planning the next step and solving problems before they occur.
You creating in the simplest form Ben like in this video is why I have been a fan since the old wood shed days an I'm still hear ,..I like all the side stuff you an your staff showcase but your building an creating an ( let's not forget your personality, fight me in the comments..lol😂)..is why I'm a subscriber an fellow guitar maker ,.. keep them coming Ben..🤘
Good neck carving tunes for ISO tunes, Hoodoo Gurus, great Aussie band!
Listening suggestion for Bun: Plini (artist). Basically anything he has done is pure gold!

Seconded- Plini is terrific. And for the less metally moments (own up, we all have them) Matteo Mancuso and Julian Lage are solid picks.
I have only reshaped necks usually nocking the shoulder down on the treble side. Ive only done it on natural satin or oil finishes but i do it by feel
Shaping the heel, where you said it was potentially boring, might have been my favorite part.
2:56 I just had to re-watch that bit a few times 🤣
Have you tried using a gun stock checkering cradle to carve necks? You can google how to make one. Allows for rotating your work while holding it steady at almost any angle. I made one to hand checker rifle stocks and love it, thought it might be useful for necks as well.
All those wonderful carving tools, spokeshaves and blades and the rasp is the go to tool. If I had to use grinding and sanding tools only I'd give up sculpture. Yes he used a chizel for a moment but just about everything could have been done with a spokeshave,
I'm absolutely sure this will become a gorgeous instrument - you've obviously created magnificent guitars before, and you most certainly will after this one's done 👍 However, I'm a bit puzzled by this request to copy a Fender, albeit in very rare wood. I have this feeling of 'thin ice' and that you're jumping through some additional hoops on this lengthy journey, and whether it might backfire at some point... If it was me (and I know it isn't) I would definitely have made an instrument to my own original design. It's always a joy to watch you create (in the broader sense of the word), but I do really hope that the client appreciates the end result accordingly.
The carving of the heel-neck transition was absolutely one of the hardest things to do. Neck side transition, easy, with I must admit (on my opinion) a beautiful result. On the heel side.... I mostly just ignore it. Would make ok one side, try on the other, and wouldnt be simmetric... tried to adjust until ok, go back to the other... fail to make it simmetric again. In the end made it a very simple, semi round-ish, semi-simetrical-ish thing, that I just tend to ignore and hope everyone else does the same..... So... please, what a about a full on, 30-40min Ben documentary on how to carve that heel-neck transition?
Please tell me when it's finished that this guitar won't be going anywhere before we can come and see it in person Ben!
Definitely facet the neck with measurements the first and 12th fret and straight lines drawn between. Two main cuts to begin with, then another pair offacets drawn on the two main facets. Goes very quickly this way.
Bob Dylan, Street Legal. circa '75. The album that changed my music preferences from Dad's old Country Western to my older brothers' stash from under the old American Walnut Zenith Console. (What I wouldn't give to have that piece back from the grave!) -✌️
Cheers from Texas! 🤟😺🤟 What to listen to: The Olive Tree by Scale the Summit All the best Michael Francis
Whats the guitarr that you ate copying the neck from? Looks super good!! The one you build as well! Keep it up!
I love your work and your videos, but just one question, how many watches do you have and specialy, how many Speedmaster ?
Ah come on Ben, the Straightedge of DOOOOM!!!! 😂😂
Beautiful as always ben god bless
Probably try Split Enz, Finn Brothers, Dave Dobyn, Shona Laing, etc. All the New Zealand classics that my parents are mad at me for not listening to more.
Music suggestion for serious guitar rock: Band-Maid, album Just Bring It.
What was on your Thin Lizzy playlist? The (fret) Rocker? Holly Wood (Down on your Headstock)?
U2 are making necks now? Kewl!
Ben should listen too... Mr Fastfinger !
Ben: "AM I TALKING LOUD? IT FEELS LIKE I"M TALKING LOUDER." Crew: "No, no... you're good." *turn and giggle*
I love the faceting method for neck carving, especially with a shinto rasp. I've had a lot of success this way. I like to put a strip of blue painters tape along my pencil lines, I find that it's helpful to show me exactly when i get to the line and it allows me to follow my template more precisely
Could you try making a faceted guitar neck, then sand and finish it without removing the facets and have someone play it?
I was wondering if we'll ever see that hand tool only guitar ever again. Sincerely, A Fellow Procrastinator

Any chance of an acoustasonic on the Daily Guitar Draw? A Mexican one would do. 😁

I'm a bit worried for the tree, is it okay?
You should listen to 'the chimp paradox'
I can’t believe Fender didn’t use locking tuners on those acoustic electrics.
I don’t want this to come across as weird but seeing Ben struggle to focus on the carve, and easily distract himself feels very much like my ADHD symptoms. I find they trigger most when nervous and that sticks out to me as him being so passionate about the build he gets nervous and his adhd symptoms kick in. Which in a weird way is incredible nice to see and relate to
Motorcycle by Colter Wall, seems to me neck-carvin' music.
That all looked very scary to me, but then again Ben did it lots of times before I guess.
The straight edge of Crimson😂
Question: Why do you work in millimetres? The original measuremets for all instrumuments are Imperial. I have worked in thet system since 1969. Firstly, inches are more accurate ( e.g. O.040 is millimrtere. Also a 25/64" is 0.991 mm) hence tuners need to bought with extra parts as 10 mm . are too big. I know the world, other than the US is metric. but instruments weren't made that way. The old system is accurate to 1/1000 " of an inch. Metric only to 1/99 cm. Just curious.
Just imagine if a custom 24 and an acoustasonic jazzmaster had a child.
You should listen to Destrage's second album "The King Is Fat And Old"!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Did I miss something. I saw 2 templates for the radius in the last episode, at the 12 and 0 fret, but only using one for the facets here. (I'm only half way through the video)

Use a spokeshave that's painful watching the rasp. Plus it's a lot faster. Wayne

I do.. i do need some coffee... Maybe Ben is clairvoyant too... Or an .....influencer 😊
Ben: Until we can find a way to restore errors using CTRL+Z in real life. Me: Until then we make do with saw dust and superglue. Also, the feel is always right when you're working on it. The real test is always a couple of days later. Is the feel still right then when you don't have the bias of having worked on it for a couple of hours? Many were the times when I still had a go at days later.

prow-cess? As in prow of a boat? Or do you mean pro-cess? Because I've never heard the former. And it doesn't matter, language is for communication and is constantly changing, the hard or soft pronunciation of a letter makes no difference. Unless you pronounce 'scone' line like 'gone', then you're just wrong.
