Ep.1 Sweet Potato Betta Tank SETUP - No filter, No CO2, NO ferts 4.5 Gallon Nano Aquarium
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
This is my attempt at a sweet potato betta tank. The aquarium is custom made at a local shop. It’s made of low iron 5mm thick glass. I wanted a low height aquarium b/c bettas don’t really care for a deep aquarium. Also, it kinda looks neat.
The sweet potato is one of those plants that can have roots water logged and won’t rot. Also, it should grow pretty fast and the roots should provide plenty of 'filtration' for the betta. The giant duckweed and the hornwort should assist with water quality, too. I’m hoping the betta will use the hornwort as his bed. I’m not sure how this will turn out.

My flowerhorn Pollock is doing fine. He’s the same o’ same o’ LOL. Still eating like a hog. I should do a proper update in the near future, but I’m not a full time youtuber, and time is a rare commodity these days. I’ll do one in the near future.
Drilling a hole in the glass is not that easy. I practiced on spare glass many times before attempting it on the low iron glass lid. I watched bunch of youtube videos on how to do it.
B/c this is not Walstad method tank, I'll be adding tiny bits of TetraMin Flakes every day so that it'll act as food for the bacteria and will get broken down and eventually will feed the plants.

@Foo the Flowerhorn, now I'm probably gonna get beat up for this but what if, just what if instead of those sweet Potato plants you had planted a single cannabis plant on each side and watch it grow it's flowers NOT necessarily the buds mind you. Just the plants that's all. The living organisms in the water would also benefit from the nutrients with that led light!

@ThiagoSpitfiree
5 жыл бұрын
@@xXMatheusSSZXx Mint is a very cool plant, it germinate through a healty root, making a few stems that could grow. Usually in small aquariums, i tend to weave three or four roots of mint plant so they can grow together, and i grow them with roots inside of the water and stems outside, if you have some nursery for baby fishes it fits perfectly inside so it could grow and protect the new stems from bigger fishes..

Coming back to this lovely little series. I decided to try putting some sprouted sweet potatoes in water and the roots are growing nicely! Thanks for the idea, good sir!
Yay! A new series! Loved the last one, and as a Betta lover, looking forward to this!
lol, cool set up. The sweet potatoes gave me a laugh. You should consider lowering the substrate right in front of the glass. The thickness is irrelevant since it is there merely for aesthetic purposes and not to feed plants like on your other no filter tank. Having the substrate slant up slightly towards the back will create better sense of depth.
Well, they must have opened a new shop with aliens near your place recently.
Loving your choice in music Indeed a man of great taste

Curious how well the potato's will grow. A lot of times root vegetables are harder to grow hydroponically because the tuber can be sensitive to water, although the holder you've got looks great.
@Automedon2
5 жыл бұрын
That's how you start new sweet potato plants - submerging half in a container of water. Once they start rooting, the roots completely fill the container. Not sensitive at all.
I just don't understand why these videos are so hypnotic and fascinating to watch - but they are!
Very excited to see how this all turns out!!!

Very curious to see how this works out! Thank you for posting, love all your videos, they're so calming and nice to watch😃
So excited to see where this tank goes.
The setup is beautiful. However, seiryu stone doesn't seem to be a good idea for a betta. A betta's fins are very delicate and can easily get torn by stones with sharp edges, especially if you get one of the fancier betta types. Also, you may want an opaque cover. Bettas sometimes like to try to jump out of the tank, and it may knock its head on the clear glass. It'll love the duckweed though, as it's the perfect place for its bubble nest.

It is an AC Current and it is a Plug so it doesn't really matter. If this was a special contact where you could only have Phase on one spot in the socket, it might of mattered. But most sockets can be attached in what ever fashion to the wall. So, which one is phase and not, doesn't really matter. Because the Circuit breaks when ever the switch is turned off. So the load, in this case the Heater will not pull anything. And the heater is what? 200-300 watt? That lamp cable can handle that.
that fish looks so weird it freaks me out

I'm prrrrettttyy sure the nutrient consumption will come from the duck weed and hornwort. The sweet potato thing is a pretty old joke around aquarium groups. I remember getting in the hobby and reading decade old forums arguing about their filtration capabilities. Love your vids, but wouldn't recommend people actually attempt to use sweet potatoes as a form of biological flirtation. A properly planted and established tank will do so better.

This set up has potential... It's all about variables, how much you feed the beta and how often, whether or not all plants/potatoes develop proper roots.. How often you provide water changes.. Whether or not you add nutrients/almond leaves and other things... I used to root house plant clippings in my aquariums /beta homes, worked great, the beta homes with the rooting house plants had lower levels of Ammonia/Nitrites and Nitrates than the ones that didn't ...
