Good thing you're a PIC programmer and can figure some of this out. Ive done some programming but what you've accomplished is fantastic. I'm learning so much from your videos. I take my TX16S to field and everyone ask how I've gotten it to work with my AR receivers and I point them to your videos. Keep up the great work Shane.

You saved me a LOT of time with that tip of the RF Protocol to X 2F. My radio was using the 2 1F and the telemetry was disabled on my AR636. Now I have everything up and running. Thanks!!

Great stuff thanks. Just picked up a Boxer 4 in 1 to use with a Turbo Timber Evolution and A10 and so far managed to bind with the Turbo Timber (not yet tried the A10) but the aileron’s and rudder are reversed and also need to figure out the flaps.

v0.53 Forward Programming doesn't work with the Boxer due to lack of memory but this morning I was chatting with the developer and he is close to releasing a "slim" version of Forward Programming that will give you some of the functionality. You probably won't be able to do a full factory reset RX setup with it because those were the memory hog features that had to go. Hopefully more on that in a future video. The Turbo Timber Evo can be mostly setup without Forward Programming such as re-assigning the safe channel. Reverse thrust you'll need a Spectrum ESC programmer or a Spectrum transmitter to setup.

While I have not personally used an AR8360T, the Forward Programming Lua for EdgeTX should perform any function that a Spektrum transmitter will do. I know the multi-protocol module will receive telemetry but I am not certain it has 100% compatibility with all the full range telemetry values.

Does this basically allow the same forward programming done on a spectrum transmitter like setting up safe on a brand new receiver for a pnp plane?

Yes it does. A new Spektrum receiver that didn't come in a BNF plane would be easier. One focus of this series is how to unlock the BNF receivers to let you start from scratch if you desire. On an "off the shelf" receiver you can skip that step since they will already be unlocked. If your receiver is unlocked already once you get this software setup as shown in episode #1 you can start programming your receiver immediately!

Very intriguing video. Recently, I purchased Radio Master TX16S for inav and Ardupilot. For years, I was fighting with Spektrum with compatibility issues with inav. Currently I have Spektrum IX 14 which I'm considering selling. Is forward programming compatible with smart ESC?

The Smart ESC doesn't use forward programming but has its own "app" to edit. We fortunately also have that capability as well. If you find my video about reverse thrust on the Aeroscout I demonstrate the DSM Telemetry app on the TX16S. At the moment we have full forward programming and smart ESC compatibility with EdgeTX!

Will this work with forward programming on the 8 and 10 channel SAFE receivers that came out about a year ago? You only list the 6 channel ones.

Any DSMX receivers that use Forward Programming should work the same as any Spektrum transmitter. Now since I made these episodes the developer has been making updates so be sure to get the latest script versions. As I write this comment, the current version is v0.55 and you'll need EdgeTX version 2.8.4 or higher to take advantage of all the updates and features. Keep in mind that even the 6 channel receivers have up to 20 "virtual channels" that can be used for safe select, reverse thrust, gyro gains, etc.

Do the blade helicopters use Spektrum receivers and do they use forward programming for setup? If so, then this may work for you. I am not familiar with any helis so I can't say for sure. Working on Episode 2 today!

I’m new to all of this I have a spektrum nx6 and a radiomaster tx16,how do I go about setting it up,because I like the look and feel of the radiomaster a whole lot better

I do not believe so. I have no experience with that receiver or the Blade 180 CFX so I don't want to give you incorrect information. I don't see anything in the AR6335 manual relating to Forward Programming.

Hey Shane, wondering if you can help me. I’m using a TX16S and an AR630. I have successfully uploaded the latest files to my TX and I’m able to bind successfully, however when I attempt to enter forward programming, I get the error message “no compatible DSM receiver.” Do you know what the source of the error could be? Thanks!

Did you get the latest forward programming scripts for the B&W radios? Current versions for the Boxer would be "DSM FwdPrg_56_MIN.lua" and "DSM FwdPrg_56_STUP.lua" and be sure to install the /SCRIPTS/TOOLS/DSMLIB folder with its contents from the GitHub package and make sure you create the /MODELS/DSMDATA folder. If you upgraded from an older version be sure you deleted the old /SCRIPTS/TOOLS/DSMLIB folder and copied the latest DSMLIB folder to match the new Lua scripts. How old is the AR630 and was it from a BNF airplane? If it has older, locked firmware you might get messages like that so might need to update the firmware with the Spektrum USB cable. Spektrum just released 2.48.0 firmware in the last few days. Make sure when you bind, you use DSM X2F and not one of the DSM2 protocols as they have limited functionality with the "Smart" features. For troubleshooting, you can pull the "dsm_min_log.txt" file off your SD card from the /LOGS folder and send it to me, it might offer some information if the above things to fix it.

One more thing, in your Internal RF setup be sure the "Channels Enabled" is set for 1-12. Sometimes it defaults to 1-6 or 1-16 and those may give you problems because the proper number of channels won't be active.

On the fence about selling my Spektrum DX6e and getting the RadioMaster TX16S II. Is that a good idea? I only have spektrum planes with the stock an AR636A and an AR637TA receivers in them. My issue is they are gliders with ailerons and NO flaps, an I want to have flaperons / spoilerons so I can land easier. Thanks for any suggestions.

We have an old DX6i, an NX6, and the TX16S. While they are all good, even the old DX6i I like, I absolutely love my TX16S, as you can probably tell if you browse my RC videos. For me it has been flawless and as a technical nut and programmer, the infinite programmability of the TX16S is amazing. I've setup my AeroScout with flaperons, I have a video or two on that, perhaps more to come. The TX16S will do anything you can dream up. With the latest developments this year with DSM Tools including updated forward programming, Avian TextGen, and telemetry scripts the Spektrum compatibility is fantastic as demonstrated in this video series. If you need the funds to move on to the TX16S and I was in your shoes I would sell the DX6e and get the TX16S in a heartbeat. If you don't necessarily need the money and have a few airplanes I'd say keep it as a backup or buddy box if you ever want to train someone. If you add an external 4 in 1 module for about $60 to the TX16S you can bind the DX6e to it wirelessly and let a buddy train through your master controller.

@@marinrealestatephotography No videos on accessories yet. I have ordered an additional momentary button for it, waiting for it to arrive and I'll do an install video. If you decide to pull the trigger, there is a basic TX16S which is fine, no "bling". Be sure to get the Mark II model with the internal 4-in-1(FCC) module (unless you are in Europe you might have to get the LBT) so it will operate your Spektrum receivers. The Mark II has some general upgrades to potentiometers, buttons, audio speakers, etc. I opted for the Carbon Fiber Red Mark II Max model which has some added cosmetic upgrades as you can see in my videos. If you can swing the added cost, the AG01 gimbals are really nice. I didn't get those but my brother did (guess he had to show me up!).

@@shanesdiy Thanks for the tips. Yes, I am in the USA and yes, planning to get the 4-in-1 module on the MK II, and if later down the line I need it, getting the ELRS external module. The red Max model does look sweet. I guess one of my concerns though is that with my Current Spektrum DX6e and my Conscendo advanced and Conscendo Evolution, I get a lot of fades and I had a flight with three holds. I was informed by a Spektrum employee that my DX6e was the "bottom tier" model. So I guess my only real concern is whether the single antennae on the on the 4-in-1 model of the TX16S MK II is going to be the same or worse than my DX6e in terms of transmission quality (I only fline line of sight so I don't need huge range, but where I usually fly does have a lot of RF interference.)

All I can say about that is I've never experienced a loss of signal in flight with my TX16S. I don't check any logs to see if there are/were fades. Wish I had a more definitive answer on that but I don't. I fly in a very rural area so I don't think I have much in the way of RF interference.

Is there a programming in the BOXER TX?do you know?

I have not done it myself but yes, I believe the latest version of forward programming for EdgeTX will work on the boxer.

I just bought a replacement 631 (not bnf) will this be locked??? Will it be programmed properly for the Aeroscout??? AAS3X and SAFE

Most likely it will have no gryo/safe setting configured. It will just be a normal, non gyro receiver until the "first time setups are completed most likely. I suppose it is possible they pre-program the AeroScout safe settings if you order it as an AeroScout replacement. I think it would say something about that on the sales order if it had been pre-programmed.

If you have the latest v0.56 Forward Programming script on the radio and it works no reason to update. I "think" 2.7.1 or newer is OK for Forward Programming. I'm double checking with the developer and will post here if I am mistaken. The "DSM Smart RX Tel" scripts do require 2.8.3 or higher to work with the Avian ESC's. I get into that in later videos on the channel.

Just confirmed with the developer, unless you decide to use the "DSM Smart RX Tel" script for Avian ESC setup, your 2.7.1 will be fine with Forward Programming v0.56 which is the latest as of today.

@@KroonFPV When you upgrade from v0.54 to v0.56 be sure to delete the old /SCRIPTS/TOOLS/DSMLIB folder and contents and copy the new DSMLIB folder you'll receive with the v0.56 files. You'll get errors if you don't. I did confirm with the developer that 2.7.1 will be fine with the Forward Programming functions. If you decide to try and run the DSM Smart RX Tel script you will then need to update to EdgeTX 2.8.3 or higher.

hello, im not sure if this is a way i could follow but im trying to figure out how can i connect my edgetx to the scout? i contacted radio master and this is what they said "RadioMaster RC Hi, I checked the product introduction of AeroScout S 2 1.1m BNF and saw that the receiver it carries is Spektrum AR631 DSMX 6-Channel AS3X & SAFE Receiver. If you buy a TX16S with a built-in ELRS RF module, you can only bind the ELRS 2.4 GHz receiver, not the Spektrum DSMX receiver. If you buy a TX16S with a built-in 4in1 module, you can bind this Spektrum DSMX protocol receiver. Built-in 4in1 module: supports SPEKTRUM AS3X receiver. I found a video on KZread about how to bind and set up the AS3X receiver. i bought the tx16s edgetx with built in elrs, but in the box i also have a package with like some reciever and labeled elrs..

You can purchase an external 4in1 RF module for the TX16S that would snap on the back then you can have both ELRS and 4in1 for Spektrum, FrSky, FlySky, etc. That would be my recommendation. If you setup another plane in the future you can use ELRS if desired. You can, of course change the receiver in the AeroScout but you'll need one with PWM servo outputs. What model ELRS receivers came with your radio? Some are only serial output and have no servo outputs and to use one of those, you would also need to add a flight controller of some type. I would get the external 4in1 module. Keep the AeroScout stock and follow the procedure in my more recent video linked below. Unless you need to do some custom programming you don't need forward programming or to unlock the receiver as discussed in this video series. @@shanesdiy thanks for replying back, the radio i got came in the bundle with the atom rc swordfish. im not to familiar to much on components from receivers but i ordered the atom rc swordfish with a flight controller, gps installed, inav installed RTH, FPV ready , and some other good stuff in the plane. and the radio it came with is the radiomaster tx16s mk2 + RP1 receiver with internal elrs. thats as much as i know. not sure where i use the rp1 receiver for? i ordered the aeroscout because i do not want to crash the swordfish so i wanna get my hands wet on aeroscout. the elrs package is a rp1 receiver that came in the box.

@@teamchecko9086 The RP1 is a tiny ELRS receiver that connects to a flight controller. It doesn't control servos by itself. The RP1, and receivers like it, let your TX16S talk to the flight controller and the flight controller runs all the aircraft systems. Servos, motor ESC, GPS, etc. I'd keep all that equipment for the Swordfish and leave the AeroScout stock to get some flight training. Get the external 4in1 RF module and then you can bind to just about any receiver on the market with your radio. My radio has the internal 4in1 and I have external ELRS so just the opposite as you but will do the same thing. I also have an external 4in1 module. Very versatile radio.

i just want to check what is going on, so basiclly we are installing the foward programming menu from the spektrum radios on to our radiomaster, so we can access foward programming after we unlock our receiver that came in a bnf airplane. Also, after this is all set up will i be able to set my servo rates to 150%? Does this risk bricking my transmitter at all if not done properly?

I am not aware of anything within forward programming that limits, or removes limits on servo rates. The default safe and intermediate modes do have bank limits but that isn't a rate limit. Forward programming sets up the safe mode gyro settings, gyro gains and channel, gyro control directions, f-mode channel, wing & tail types, etc. Much newer scripts out since I made this episode 1 video, the github link in the description should take you to the most current updates but in this video the links I use are old. In later episodes of this series I discuss some changes, how to update the radio with the latest scripts. They can be long videos but chapters should help you find relevant details. The forward programming lua scripts are just one of many scripts that most EdgeTX radios have available. Not sure how you would brick your radio with one of these scripts but certainly if you delete something you shouldn't or corrupt your memory card, you could cause issues. Yes, these scripts, if properly installed and used, allow you to perform all functions via forward programming that you can do from a Spektrum transmitter. Also, as you'll see in my later videos, the developer has also added a script to let you setup the Spektrum Avian ESC's as well, just as you would from a Spektrum transmitter.

@@HenryDoesStuffShorts Technically it's not Forward Programming but similar. The Forward Programming script package has a script called "DSM_SmartRX_Tel.lua" that handles the Avian ESC programming. You do need to have your EdgeTX updated to 2.8.3 or later to get all the functionality. Two of my videos I suggest watching to learn about this. In this video series, episode 4 the "Bonus Episode" is all about the Turbo Timber Evolution so check that one out. The second is specifically about setting up reverse thrust with the TX16S on an Avian ESC from scratch. I do this on an AeroScout but the process is the same on your Timber. @@HenryDoesStuffShorts Negative. The avian signal just passes through the receiver to your transmitter, just have to be bound to the RX. ESC of course must be connected to the throttle channel of the Spektrum RX.

Does this apply if I'm using external 4 in 1 multiprotocol module?

Yes, it will. As long as your TX16S will communicate with Spektrum DSMX and you have the necessary Lua scripts and minimum EdgeTX version this applies. If you have a black and white radio like the Zorro or Boxer, I don't believe all of the forward programming functions are available yet due to lower memory, at least as of the time of this comment.

I do not see any information that the SPM4650 has the Forward Programming interface so I do not think this Lua will communicate with that receiver. The SRXL2 communication protocol is related to the receiver communicating with a flight controller, not a transmitter.

If not, I would do that and I would also see if there is a firmware update from Spektrum for the receiver. I show how to do that in episode 2. I'll forward these images to the FP v0.53 developer to see what he thinks.

After a little more investigation, the error could be related to the receiver not having the gyro safe/as3x functions. Setting failsafe is about all you can do in Forward Programming on that receiver.

For some reason my forward programming doesnt work anymore , I just get errors when I try to start the LUA . Maybe something im doing wrong

Make sure you still have the folder /MODELS/DSMDATA and if you updated from a previous version make sure you deleted the old /SCRIPTS/TOOLS/DSMLIB folder and contents and copied the new DSMLIB folder from the latest rev you are installing.

Sorry for the lack of response, for some reason KZread held your comment for review and I didn't see it. The original link went to a forum post, I assume that is the one you were referring to? The GitHub page does have everything required for the latest version of forward programming and also additional Lua scripts such as the one needed to program the Avian ESC's. In my later videos I show how I go and get the updated files and update my radio. Been thinking I should do another video soon on how to install the latest from scratch as well as how you'd correctly do the update if you had an older version so folks didn't have to scan through my other long videos to find that.

Do you have any idea why i cant highlight Safe? It doesnt have a box around it like as3x and safe select. So i cant turn safe on. Its off in all 3 modes

If the receiver is factory configured for "Safe Select", it must be enabled during the bind process. Insert bind plug, power up, pull bind plug, then bind the transmitter. Alternatively, you can power up the RX while holding the bind button and keep holding it, then bind the transmitter. That is harder do do unless you have a helper.

I just retested this. For most "Safe Select" configured receivers that are still locked, you only have safe in flight mode 1. In modes 2 & 3 you can decide if you want AS3X or not. If you want full access to all functions you must follow this series, unlock it and reprogram it.

Ok. Yea for some reason safe won't come on in any 3 modes. I'm thinking maybe I messed it up with the V0.2 version. Safe was working before I updated my firmware to the latest version. The transmitter is only a couple weeks old. My friend has a spektrum Tx so I'll try to program it with it. Will also follow this series.

@@brandonwesson6818 Is safe select ON currently? If not, Safe won't work. Updating the firmware just allows you to do a factory reset, it doesn't automatically change anything in the safe programming. The version used in this video isn't the latest, the github link to the latest v0.56 is in the description. With the latest Lua, the TX16S, Zorro, and Boxer can do everything you can do with a Spektrum transmitter. If you still have an issue, I don't think trying a different transmitter is going to solve the issue. Let me know what you are seeing, happy to help you with the problem.

@@shanesdiy thank you for the link to the thread. For some reason it doesn’t show your email on mobile but when I opened your page on my laptop it worked fine so idk anymore 🤷‍♂️ shot you an email

i did this and it all worked i thought brilliant. then i updated to 54 and it says no compatable rx when trying to connect to forward programming. ive tried going back to 53 and i also tried factory resetting using my dx6. still not connecting....

Are you still bound to the receiver and able to operate the control surfaces, throttle etc? Did you change or update any other software at the same time?

So the RX is bound to the Radiomaster and you can control it, just can't get to Forward Programming?

When i go to the forward programming it says cpu limit how do i fix this and get it to work?

What transmitter are you using and what version of Forward Programming? There have been several updates since this episode. Github link in the description will take you to the latest.

I try this on the Zorro and all I get is a Syntax error using the BW version

What OpenTX / EdgeTX version are you on? Also, the screen size matters and I'm not sure if these two versions are compatible with the Zorro. I'll ask the developer if he knows or perhaps he'll see this post and respond. I know he's seen this video.

I had Zorro, memory issues. So I got a TX16. But looks like bind & fly needs to unlock which probably needs USB.

@@BuddhaSource Yes, you'll need a Spektrum SPMA3065 programming cable. I found info online where someone made their own cable but I found a cheap one on E-Bay so just bought it. I am working on episode 2 currently where we will go through the process of updating the firmware on my BNF AR631 to unlock it. Keep an eye out for it, I hope to release it by this weekend or sooner, stay tuned!

Hey i just found this need it desperatly. But cant see what files you copied to tools the link you have have like 20 files plus some are still compressed after you extract. Not too good at this stuff and bricked radio already took me 4 days and alot of videos to get it back

New links to a github page since this video was made in the description. Yes, there are a couple more zip files to unzip after the main file. Dig down until you find the proper individual files. As of now v0.55 is the latest, did you get that? In a later video I work with the newer download files.

I got it I think but for some reason can't get as3x to work beeps say it's on but no work. Got through ep3 did all of it I hope still nothing can make safe work but not as3x by itself new reciever in viper 70 old one died

@@mitchfowler646 AS3X doesn't activate until you throttle up over 25%, I assume you were aware of that but have to mention it. If you have the latest forward programming do you have access to the F-Modes inside forward programming? If yes, as you switch between them, you should see the settings for each mode so you'll know if AS3X is enabled in modes 2 and/or 3. AS3X and safe are not active at the same time because safe handles all stabilization. If it is a new receiver that was not from a BNF model, you'll need to setup all flight modes with your preferences. Did you setup all 3 flight modes?

Switch sd is set away off middle as3x to me safe reset and did again everything seems to work I think I forgot to activate as3x again after set up safe but not sure we will see. Still think I am missing something in downloads I did .055

Sure thing. The new link is in the description but here is it again. If you have a previous version of the Forward Programming Lua on the radio be sure to delete the old /SCRIPTS/DSMLIB folder and contents from the SD card and replace it with the new one. github.com/frankiearzu/DSMTools

@@cloudstrife778 That is just the zip file name, not sure what "SD" stands for off the top of my head. Once you unzip it you'll find the lua file name is "DSM FwdPrg_56_Color.lua"

yeah. Im WAY the fuck in over my head. I cant even get it to work in a simulator when i connect it to the PC windows 11. I figured for the cost of these they might be a little more user friendly. Yeah as user friendly as its safe to let Hellen Keller fly a plane.

Lol, hope you stick it out and learn it. Being open source, the information and support available is public driven much like I do with my channel here. It's quite rewarding once you wrap your head around it and realize you can do just about anything you can dream up with these radios.

The video is pretty short already and I did my best to make it easy to follow. I'm not sure what could be cut to make it shorter without losing important information. You must follow the steps. I have split it into chapters to make it easier to navigate the steps in the video. Perhaps you could recruit a friend who is good with computers to help? Ask any questions you have if you get stuck and I'll do my best to assist.

You go far to fast when you are showing things how to programme, not all people are whiz kids with programming age also comes into it. Sorry but it did not help me at all

@@roderickjamesriddick9869 I'll do my best to help. I'm going to assume you have a Radiomaster TX16S or comparable radio and a Spektrum receiver since you found this video. If not, please confirm because the transmitter and receiver in use can make a big difference. A common channel order is "AETR" or aileron, elevator, throttle, and rudder. I use this channel order for my transmitter and it sounds like your default order is also AETR from your comment above. Spektrum uses "TAER" or throttle, aileron, elevator, and rudder. The multi protocol module firmware you install on the transmitter lets you select whatever you want for your default channel order. When you bind to a Spektrum receiver the radio software will convert your transmitters default channel order to TAER automatically. If you have the AETR firmware you need to use that order when you create the model or it will convert it incorrectly when you bind to the Spektrum. That said, in the mixer of your model setup you can easily move channels around to suit your needs. The only time the radio forces a certain channel order is when you first create the model. After that you can move them around in the mixer, just change the source for whichever channel you want to edit to the input of your choice. What receiver are you using that wants throttle on channel 2 and elevator on channel 3 and where are you seeing the incorrect channel order? In the Inputs or the mixer or are you talking about what is in Forward programming? Sorry for the long post, trying to confirm what your issue may be.

@@shanesdiy Thanks for getting back, it a iTX16S chan 2 on the sticks is saying thr wrong it should be saying ele, chan 3 on the sticks is saying ele when it should say thr, yes I have Spektrum rx fly Mod 2. Hope that helps

@@roderickjamesriddick9869 On the inputs tab it doesn't matter which control is on which input. For example "Input 1" doesn't have anything to do with Channel 1 in the mixer unless you assign Input 1 as the source for Channel 1. Are you lookin at the inputs or mixer?
