ep.1) 1st month - Truly naturalistic hamster TERRARIUM cage change (no wood bedding)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Hello, this is Hamster Lab. It's been a month since Somi has been in her natural cage.
In the previous video, I added it because the environment was enriched and the amount of plants was small.
Many people were worried, but there are explanations left out of the video for fear of getting bored.
I put urethane vinyl under the cage, but there is a hole in one side. The floor provides smooth air circulation and drainage.
We tried to implement a drainage layer, an inorganic layer, an organic humus layer, and an undecomposed organic layer according to the natural soil composition.
The arbor top soil is composed of 40% cocopeat, 30% vermiculite, 15% biotite, 10% zeolite (reticular silicate mineral), 3% microorganisms, and 2% humus.
In addition, EM was sprayed. Humidity does not exceed 50% (with a dehumidifier), and air is circulated with a small fan. For the feed, only pure grain feed was provided, and for protein, raw mealworms were evenly distributed in the cage.
Now that a month has passed, the fungus has not been confirmed and the hamster is also healthy.
My cage is based on the Kazakh environment.
Thank you so much for watching the video!

@@MsPlundgren Actually, the dirt stays really clean, so I'm not planning on doing a COMPLETE substrate change, probably ever (unless my ham gets sick, etc...)! The thing with soil is you need to get organic (unfertilized) soil so it's safe :) The soil I use is Pots and Plants All Purpose Organic Soil, and the texture is awesome!! I get it from my local hardware store for $4/15L bag. If you're doing deep cleans every week... is the cage on the smaller side? Usually smaller cages get stinkier faster. If your cage is above minimum and still needs weekly deep cleans, that may be caused from lack of spot cleaning (cleaning out pee/poo/nest/food hoard every couple days). Hope this helps!

As a keeper of darkling beetles (adult mealworms), that worm would find that tank very uncomfortable immediately. The soil is far too moist and smooth and it would likely due to moisture related infection or moisture related issues during the molting process, these animals feel much more at home in an arid desert environment.

Yeah and the the real cruelty is that so many people think the way pet stores treat their animals is the right way. I’ve had a dozen pets over the years and looking back I didn’t do near enough for any of them yet at the time I thought I was being a good, responsible pet owner. I had no idea Hamsters love to burrow, something that should be told to every hamster owner the moment they even consider buying one as a pet. It’s why I gave my iguana the walk in closest in my room as her enclosure. I had to do a lot of work to remodel it and ensure she wouldn’t be able to escape, but seeing her roam freely in there with all that room makes it totally worth it. It’s not completely realistic like this is, but it’s fairly close.

Hi! Flying Saucer disks are actually quite bad for their back! They need a 10-12 inch up right wheel instead! I also don't recommend feeding live meal worms as they can bite, and if your hamster decides to pouch them it can bite their cheeks and potentially cause an infection! Incredibly beautiful enclosure though, I'm sure your hamster absolutely loves it!

밀웜보다는 흙에서 잘 자라는 땅강아지와 귀뚜라미를 투여하시면 밀웜보다 생존률도 높고 좋을거같습니다.

I thought it was the upright wheels that hurt their backs and the flat ones were the safer alternative?

@@lairdofpawblins agreeing with you here! The flat ones are the safer alternative as long as they are the right size! The flat wheels don’t make their back bend backwards in unnatural positions and most don’t have holes where they could possibly break their paw/toes Or running the risk of them not knowing how to stop and flipping themselves around Though I’ve never heard of an injury related to that, I’m sure it isn’t too pleasant.
