Eosinophilic Esophagitis: David's Story

Ғылым және технология

David was struggling with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), which causes inflammation in the esophagus. It occurs when an unusually high number of white blood cells respond to an allergic-like reaction in the esophagus. EoE is the most common cause of swallowing problems in people under the age of 40. David worked with his doctor at the Stanford Health Care Esophagus Center, Nielson Fernandez-Becker, MD, PhD, to manage his condition.

Must be nice to have a GI who cares. At my first repeat endoscopy, my GI greeted me on the table with the line, "After today, there is nothing else I can do for you. You can get your biopsy results from your GP." I still don't know my triggers. Medical abandonment sucks,

It’s a horrible illness that your friends or doctor can’t understand. The only treatment they have are oral steroids which are unsafe for long term use, or cutting out practically every major food in the human diet, the telling you it’s one of those and to go figure it yourself. EOE sucks.

I’ve had EOE for 9 years now. Been to the emergency room once. It’s no picnic & quite scary in social situations. I recently had an episode at a restaurant, my amazing girlfriend bought me some olive oil. It lubricated my esophagus & I was able to self-vomit a piece of salmon that had gotten stuck.

This is a nightmare to go through, it used to be entirely swallow related but after being lax with my medicine for a while I am now currently bed ridden. My esophagus is inflamed to the point where each heartbeat hurts and anything more than a shallow breath REALLY hurts. I've had to visit the ER two nights in a row to figure it out. Here's what I learned (hopefully it saves time for some people): Take a food allergy test and avoid all the foods you are allergic to. My list is so long that it makes my head spin; I'm basically forced into just eating fish and fruit. Avoid or cut back on nicotine (pretty difficult for me). Avoid or cut back on alcohol. Lift the head of your bed (or sleep in a comfy recliner). And most importantly, see a gastrologist for a prescription.

I was diagnosed with this last month after an endoscopy. Although I’ve probably had had this for years. Ever since I was little I’ve had trouble swallowing. Sometimes I get a tight feeling in my throat which goes away with liquid, sometimes my throat spasms. About two months ago I had a very scary episode where my throat wouldn’t stop spasming and was vomiting blood. Could not breath properly, had to spend a night in hospital where no one understood what was happening. Even though it was scary I’m glad it happened as I wouldn’t have had the endoscopy and diagnosed. Right now I’m taking Jorveza and it taste disgusting but hopefully will be worth it. Will need another Endoscopy in a couple of weeks to see if it works. I’m just worried about having another flare up.

But how do you heal this NATURALLY? Stomach acid is vital to proper digestion and absorption of essential vitamins like vitamin B12 and minerals like iron and calcium. How do you treat the inflammation in the esophagus and prevent it's further erosion while also managing acid reflux in a way that it doesn't continue to erode the esophagus? Update: It's been two years since I posted this question. I've done a lot of digging, research, trial, and error. I've Seen multiple doctors including functional medicine doctors and practitioners, I've read multiple nutrition books and made many changes to my diet. I'm happy to say that my EoE is nearly in complete remission. I no longer need PPIs for acid reflux - haven't taken a single pill in over a year and a half, I've corrected my nutritional deficiencies, and now my digestion is better than ever. What I did might not be right for everybody, but it certainly made a difference for me.

@@meredithiager9581 I tried for a long time to treat my acid reflux naturally - eating as clean as possible, removing all trigger foods, not eating anything spicy or acidic... I tried all the teas; chamomile, licorice, red tea, green tea, black tea, kombucha, apple cider vinegar tonics, etc, and nothing made it better. I tried yogurts and sauerkraut and kefir and a wide range of probiotics. I contacted Tarra Health Essentials and tried to work with their products on slowly increasing my stomach acid so my LES would close all the way... didn't work. And you know what they told me? With EoE, they couldn't IN GOOD CONCIENCE tell me to keep using their product because acid generally just made things worse for someone with EoE. I tried slippery elm, aloe, lemon balm, everything... and I couldn't even drink from a water fountain at the gym without major acid reflux. I got into yoga, meditation, cycling, and advanced breathing exercises to decrease anxiety and stress.... still had acid. Sometimes, when you have a condition, like EoE, PPI's are the only thing that works. Either that or I could take my risks with stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, Barret's Esophagus, etc. So you tell me... what more could I have done to reverse and control my acid reflux naturally? Oh, I also consume large amounts of turmeric and cumin on an almost daily basis.

Try supplements offered by Terra Health Essentials and a low carb diet. From what I've learned, one of the reasons why reflux happens is because the stomach has increased pressure pushing onto the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) causing it to open up and allow stomach contents to push back up into the esophagus, and for patients with EoE, this only causes more inflammation in the esophagus and makes eating food even more troublesome. If you can decrease the inflammation in the esophagus through supplements like slippery elm bark, licorice root extract, aloe vera, and even chamomile, plus strengthen the LES through INCREASING stomach acid production so that carbohydrates and other foods break down correctly instead of it leading to gas, bloating, and delayed gastric emptying, then you might be able to control all these things naturally. Always consult a medical doctor before trying these treatments. Hope that helps!

hey i hope this helps you but the reason you have such problems with whey is because it is a milk derivative. apparently its common to have allergic responses to dairy in EoE patients. the dairy initiates an allergic immune response in the esophagus which causes it to become inflamed. when you eat food afterwards, you experience all the pain and trouble swallowing. the reason it comes and goes for you is because you are introducing the allergen then you go a number of hours or a day without drinking the shake so your body recovers, but the next time you have the shake it gets bad again. if you cut out the cheese, milk, butter, and any other dairy from your diet you might find total relief.

i hear you. for me i get skipped heartbeats sometimes when i look up and stretch the esophagus or swallow a certain way. it was explaind to me that there is a big nerve system that goes through that area and damage tot he esophagus can expose or irritate it. if you manage to heal your esopahgus the problem with your legs will likely go away.
