EOMM Theory: Engagement Optimized Matchmaking (Call of Duty)

Ойындар

Experimental shorts channel: / @drift0rshorts61
Black Ops Cold War & Modern Warfare 2019 are the first two Call of Duty games where we have proof of SBMM. There is also a rumor going around about an Activision Patent which nerfs you mid game. However, I think the real devil you don't know about is EOMM or Engagement Optimized Matchmaking. If real, the goal of this sytem is simply to keep players on as long as possible and it has to build a psychological profile to do so.

Sadly that's not the overall trend for casual players. For example, if a dude named Dave came back from his 9-5 job and hopped on for two matches, he would probably keep coming back since he doesn't really feel the SB MM or even care enough to know what it is.

A few years ago, I realized this was the way of the world. I've since quit CoD, played Apex for a bit and got off it once it felt too "manufactured", quit most social media, and don't random click on videos on YT anymore. I search or go to subs and specifically find things. It feels better. I don't miss CoD (and played thousands of hours per year from CoD 4 to BO4). I don't miss knowing that my first game is a 3 k/d, then a 1.5, then 0.8-1.2 for the remainder of the night. We're getting to the point where we have to ask if game COMPANIES are actually doing harm to young people. I know we've put the "games do harm" thing to bed...but we need to wake it back up to really look at "do the people that publish/fund games do harm?"

**Update** I think at this point now that the SEC is getting involved with all the ActivisionBlizzard scandals Activision might have put the popcorn down and started shaking in their boots. It would be nice if the SEC decided to go through the code for COD's SBMM and EOMM and find the evidence for all the bullshit they put us through and the real time nerfing in some of those patents that we all suspect is live in the game. Its really the government's job to stop these corporations like Activision from abusing customers. When the pharma companies abuse customers or kills them the FDA steps in right away. The US needs an agency like that for these tech companies.

They have scientifically proven this decades ago. So to intentionally make these games addictive as possible and then market them to kids that are at the oldest 17 or even young adults who'd brains aren't fully matured until late 20s is the same as when big tobacco tried to market cigarettes to kids as well . Recently Juul the vape company got in trouble for doing the same thing. Activision is literally treading the same line, but the right people in congress haven't put enough thought into it yet. Also a lot of this issue is hidden behind algorithms which is a topic the majority of people can't wrap their head around in the first place. We are just now starting to see people attempt to tackle them with all the facebook stuff. What is happening to face book is going to open the door for people to look at activision.

@@boblawblaw6185 while I agree that "addiction is addiction" and yes, the same part of the brain lights up whether it's heroin or cod.. I'm not wrong. The difference is heroin (or the pharma drugs you mentioned) will literally kill people. I've been playing CoD for over 20 years. It has not affected my physical health. That being said, I agree that it's unethical and infuriating, and I'm watching this video because I've noticed something was off when I play. Now that I know I'm not the only one I'm uninstalling and will not be giving another cent to Activision. BUT there's a difference between unethical and illegal, which is why I don't think the government will get involved in trying to regulate how addictive video games can be.

I had to delete Cold War after learning more about EOMM. I do really like the game but I always felt like something was pulling some strings behind the scenes were almost every match feels very similar to the last one. I noticed I have never been on a 6+ win streak and I’m always playing against high level players and my team usually has some bad players. Like the game was rigging me on my wins and losses, what’s worse is that I can’t just chill out and enjoy the game or try out like a Pistol 007 setup during a match but if I do that I would get Molly whopped by a guy with a Tec9 who has a CDL skin. So I really don’t like playing a game that has an algorithm where it’s toying with my emotions and dopamine levels to get me to keep playing and spend some money on the game. I hate where we are going as a society

This whole video is an expansion on my comment on your SBMM video and I love it. Nail on the head right there. Disconnecting when it gets too much is exactly the thing to do. I quit Facebook a long time ago now, Instagram is almost at that point now. I think MW was the last CoD I’ll ever buy. The algorithms will hopefully soon work out that people realise we’re being squeezed and they’ll get better at making us feel that way, but also at the same time they’ll still do it, just they’ll get better at it.

Call it whatever you want. If connection isn’t priority #1 then it won’t ever be the right approach. If you really want to protect the bottom tier skill of players then adjust the algorithm so that those with a k/d below let’s say 0.85 will have the SBMM and those above that can have the connection based matchmaking. Could even put the top 5% in the SBMM lobbies too if they really wanted.

  • @surajmadhav1953

    @surajmadhav1953

Exactly, and honestly connection MATTER EVEN MORE if your SBMM is cranked up. Given how fast the TTK is, gunfights in competitive lobbies put an even greater emphasis on connection, since you have no room for error since the person you are fighting most likely won’t be missing shots and has similar level instincts. At that point the connection will determine who will win the gunfight given 2 guys are pretty equal in skill.

I think EOMM is in place in most any and all games now a days. I believe SBMM was the start to it and what we have now is an amalgamation of all Activisions skill tracking ai’s in any and all of their games. It’s now to a standard that works so well for them we can feel it but can’t see it or touch it. Look at every cod since cod 4 every single one has a different multiplayer feel or hardness and it has changed over the years. Cod AW was pure filtration to see what we will buy. Ghosts was to probably see how tactical we wanted to be or if we would be. Black ops has been the main test floor because they are so loved and can do no wrong. They are the Apple of cod they take what’s there and refine it and release it. They have all the money and time to do this. You can’t make me think that the game cod is just a facade to gather a metric truck load of all our data to creat a monopoly. The game is just to get you to come back and keep feeding the ai or whatever the new thing they add that year.

I think the most insidious thing about EOMM/SBMM is that it calls into doubt every time you do well and do badly. Did my 4kd game get gifted to me because of the algorithm or did I actually elevate my play. When you get crushed is there something I should work on or did the game decide it was time to knock me down a peg. This is why we need visible player rankings or a visible lobby skill rating.

And every time you lose a "normal" match its because you are the only person on your team that does objectives. What you said is 100% accurate, you have 0 influence about the match that you play in at all. Its all predetermined

@@asmith8190 you just described CoD: WaW or CoD: MW1\2. The game's, environment and gameplay I generally see being used to describe how it was before SBMM, EOMM, Ranked, ect. I 100% respect you guys wanting to play more casually AND\OR wanting more controll over you matches. That sounds perfectly fair and resonable to me. Not to mention just makes sense as a fellow human (I swear). But I think there's some confusion about the effect SBMM, ect. have on the game, rose coloured glasses for how things used to be and could be without, and\or mixed messages about what the effect actually is. That last point. The kind of matches you explained you are having seem somewhat random and what you may expect with little interferences from the matchmaker. Matches with no compitition, matches that you get smacked. The opposite, fair matches, would be less likely in a game like MW2. Assuming that's what the matchmaker in a newer game was designed to do I just think if we are all on the same page we can have a more constructive conversation.

How else would you justify a system that punishes good players?* *If you're good you get really challenging matches. If you get really challenging matches you get tired and stop playing. This then gives rooms for new players to slowly improve and spend more time with the game.*

That isn't entirely true. I've played games where my team consisted of me, prestige rank, and a bunch of sub-level-30s who got absolutely dumped on by the other team, which was full of prestige rank players booty sliding everywhere. It's a complete parody that the matchmaking system thinks this is a balanced lobby--except, this is how it was designed to function. This was the other team's "good game" and our SBMM hell lobby, and it doesn't even seem to matter how good a player is, everyone gets an SBMM hell lobby at some point. It's not just me who gets these sort of unbalanced lobbies. KZreadrs have gotten them, you can see them on Reddit, lots of people say they've gotten lobbies just like that. It's not even a fluke, it's engineered to do this.

They're not looking to keep the vets away, just looking to maximise the percentage of the player base who will buy MTX; which is going to be newer players for sure. I'm kinda ancient in some ways, started out with CS 1.3 and have played most of the titles in each series since the first CoD, MoH and BF games. Never bought MTX, never will. Cold War, I quickly started getting extremely frustrating lobbies.

  • @sugoruyo

@@qlity1243 not quite. This is examples from my personal experience so, YMMV: I did fairly well in Cold War since it came out, hit something like top 3% in KD and I was using "off-meta" guns trying to level them up. Would regularly get 3-6 KD games. Then I noticed most of my games were frustrating. I'd get a game with >1k score/min and then it would plummet to 80 score/min because of the next lobby. The most common things I noticed were: - I would get placed in lobbies were the opposing team were all using the same clan tag and obviously communicating effectively. I was solo and it seemed like my whole team was solo. Alternatively, I would get an opposing team with a 2-party, a 3-party and a solo, with, at best, a 2-party on my side. That basically guarantees you will lose and have a frustrating game at that because, you will never get callouts from teammates but, will always be called out to enemy players by their mates. - I would get placed in lobbies with people clearly way above my level: they would down weird, extremely narrow and long sight lines, have much faster reflexes (I played mostly HC DOM so largely 1HK from most weapons) and only used the "meta" weapons. - Some of the lobbies were filled with console players (I'm PC) and I'd have trouble with hit registration and they'd seem to have much more forgiving hit registration (dunno if this is an effect of aim assist or a straight-up hand out to console players, PS5 players seemed to do better than Xbox players). Like, they'd quickscope me from about 50m away with the sniper only half-way up (no sight picture was visible through the scope yet) whereas, on best play cams it would look like they are shooting quite a bit to the side. I would get a shot off on someone's shoulder and not even get hitmarkers. This was happening very consistently in Cold War, barely ever in MW2019. I suspect it's because they prioritise the lobby match over the connection. I play over a symmetric gigabit connection and, in most games, I have pings around 2-15ms. In CW I almost never got below 80 and, usually, was around 120-150ms. The point is: the players you get placed with are not actually fair competition equal to one's skill level. My suspicion is that they've mostly lumped a large cohort of players at the top 5-10% together resulting in top 3% players matching against top 1% players which is a massive difference actually. It seems like they paid close attention to optimising for new/young players (who are likely to spend the most money) and didn't really bother with the rest of us. We want to play matches were they end like 180-200 or even 199-200. Where we win, on average, half of them and we get a decent experience. When you get placed in a team that is allowing the same guy to spawn camp and kill everyone 5-6 times (literally team mates spawning and sprinting ahead to their preferred sniper position after dying 3-4 times to the same spawn camper), lose 7-9 games out of 10, more than of which are lost to scores like 200-60, something's up. If I ook at my in game score/min graph over the last 10 matches it's something like 700, 30, 40, 100, 50, 90, 40, 200, 10, 800 and the cycle repeats. That massive dip in score, reflects a massive spike in difficulty. It should be more of slow fluctuation like 700, 600, 550, 580, 720, 750, 800, 720, 650, 580 etc. where your scores don't go up or down by a factor of 10 or even 20 between two matches. That suggests a very badly tuned algorithm, at least for the cohort of players I'm in.

I feel the thing that you said at 3:18 is definitely true for Modern Warfare because I was looking at the executive armory pack and I was deciding if I should get it since the Fennec is my favorite weapon. The next maybe 10 games had people using the Golden Coffer blueprint so when my teammates died I could pick it up and try it out. The algorithm (if there is one) won for sure because I did end up buying it.

with those things that make you want to play another game like winning or hit markers as you said, i think it does have a large impact, but also it is a bit hard to do either with the sbmm system in the games. I get a 5 kill streak and then i'm playing in the CDL or something. I have like a .4 w/l ratio and a .94 k/d, but i hardly ever just get a 1.0 on anything. its more of a like, first game i get a .5 ratio, second game i get like a 2.0, and then the next game i get a .3 or something. I think this theory makes a lot of sence though. Thanks for the great content!

It's quite funny how you mention gambling and addictiveness. I work in a Casino, and I can tell you that our slots run off of pure math and odds. We don't need to change ANYTHING, we know that we will win simply because the payout is less than the odds (which is truly how the house "always wins"). However from gamblers we hear almost the exact same thing about SBMM/EOMM. Tell me if you see or hear any similarities: "I was winning money until you guys saw I was winning too much and then made me lose" "I was in a bonus and you guys changed the odds to make me lose" "On Wednesdays, you increase the odds in order to get us in mid-week to boost low Mondays and Tuesdays" "You guys have fixed this completely and chooses who wins and who loses" "The Player cards track you, and if you win too much they will make you lose more"

You might have a point if there wasn't literally a patent that lays out a system to manipulate win and loss cycles, player skill in lobbies, etc. to minimize player attrition. Every claim anyone makes in denial of SBMM has to go up against not only player tests proving the system is in game definitively, but the patent that says exactly what's possible with the system.
