At the end, the fact that Envy was able to, through sheer force of will, Command what is essentially the universe itself to take him to hohenheim, is beyond impressive. It shows just how deep his hatred for his father goes.

Agree, compare this to Ep. 50, as a complete 180 to where Envy had a terrified expression on his face at the mere presence of The Gate. Although that could've changed, had Envy known that Hohenheim was still alive much sooner.

FMA 03 had such an air of hopelessness which is what partially got me into the series.

I'm glad I read your comment Claydogg. I don't know if i'd say hopelessness, more peeimist. Like, the series seemed to be ed and al really struggling to justify their struggle. In Brotherhood, they had their resolve figured out mid way through. In the 2003 anime tho, it ends with them being determined to find each other, no matter what, with optimism. Then the movie ends with them finding each other, but being lost in our world, yet deciding to make the best of it and do wha they can to make it a better place. Honestly, not hopeless what so ever.

We never saw how tall "true form" Envy is, we only got to see his head in Ep. 50 and his upper body in Ep. 51 before turning into a dragon.

NAH!! Who you´ve described is actually Pride, not Envy.. Envy is just an apple that fell to the very trunk of it´s motherly tree.. sadistic, yes, manipulative enourmously however, he himself was being manipulated by his own mother and to such an extent that he wasn´t even aware of it.. a spiteful envious puppet, relying solely on his homonculi ability and parlor tricks he copycat from Dante.. But Pride.. that´s a different story.. Bradley.. well there can´t be said ANYTHING at all to existence of scrupules, conscience, morals or pretty much else.. ZERO hesitation to claim life/lives (one or countless) or not.. All being just perfect scharade of a devoted loving husband, benevolent yet firm and decisive leader.. It was actually him, who did practically all the work.. Lust was the ONLY homonculi with heart and conscience (even though it took her rather long time, and even that was practically solely mistake of Dante to treat Lust the way she did after second encounter with Edward, to realize who and what Dante is..) so she made choice to make things her way.. and with Gluttony she was a mere side support ( a tiny failsafe, should Pride and Envy make a blunder of the whole plan )

Envy in FMA 2003 is such a strong antagonist. Every time he was on screen, you knew he meant business. In the Manga and Brotherhood Envy was basically the butt of the joke, which to me always felt like a huge missed opportunity.

0:34 "maybe a taller version of you" is a line that just hits so different rewatching 03 cause like, both Ed and Envy strongly resemble Hohenheim, so its such a funny taunt cause like thats what Envy would ACTUALLY look like

I like when FMA Envy refers to himself as a pacifist while Manga/Brotherhood says there's no need to fight, someone might get hurt you know. In its in the tones, FMA is more calm and smooth and FMA is raspy and violent. It reveals a lot of their characters later on. The FMA's Envy slowly becoming the characteristic raspiness- revealing the violent bloodthirsty monster that he truly is. The Brotherhood's is very emotional, very sadistic, monstrous in his large form yet in its true form- its cute and trying too hard to be violent and in Envy's dying moments, its sort of mellow, babyish....kind tone. Showing that the FMA 2003 Envy is a monster at heart while the Brotherhood could've been better if allowed the chance.

It's weird. In the anime, Envy was promoted to a cold-hearted manipulative sociopath, essentially this anime's version of the Joker, with the highest authority among the Homunculi next to Pride and who ultimately didn't give two craps about his fellow Homunculi, to the point that he took to Dante's suggestion of "punishing" Wrath (and by "punishing", I mean "savagely beating") for the _heinous_ crime of missing his dead mom with sadistic relish. In the manga, however, Envy was a whiny ill-tempered little brat with no authority (he was on equal rank with _Gluttony,_ that should tell you how little sway he had among his siblings), and though still manipulative, his temper always got the better of him and he was ultimately a terrible fighter. He also seemed to care at least a little about Lust and Gluttony, the two Homunculi he was closest with. It's interesting just how different the two versions are, though I'm almost certain that most of Envy's popularity can be owed to the 2003 version, which made him far more prominent and vastly more interesting (though that's not to say Mangahood!Envy is a bad character, far from it).

CJCroen1393 I disagree completely. The Envy in the manga/2009 anime seemed to be much deeper in terms of character development. As opposed to the high ranking monster we got in the 2003 anime, the manga version seemed to be the actual personification of envy and jealousy. This was particularly evident during his death, which demonstrated that the confident expression he wore was really a mask (aligning nicely with his power of shapeshifting), and in reality he was incredibly self-conscious.

The voice of Hohenheim’s son is very soothing. Before he screamed “TO MY FATHER!”

3:05 That single line, reflects so much and so well everything that defines this version of Envy, that hate, that rage, but also, that sadness almost to the point of crying, all this emotions reflects his conflict with hohenheim and mental state, and also, one of the reasons to why I love so much the english dub of Fma (either 2003 or Brotherhood).

0:49 a more serious version of..."LUCKY MEE!!!"

Envy felt more like a Wrath here than Envy. I'd even go so far as to say Envy and Wrath should switch namesakes in 03, because Wrath seeks to have what Ed has, a normal body and a mother, and Envy is fueled by his hate for Hoenhiem and wants to kill him. But I guess since it started out faithful in the manga, the 03 series couldn't walk back any roles aside from 2 others. Regardless, 03 is special to me. I adore it.

Envy and wrath aren't mutually exclusive. Envious people tend to either become very covetous (aka Greed), or very vindictive. 2003 Envy became the latter.

The Homunculi aren't actually named after the sin they themselves hold, but the sin that their creator had.

Envy's death scene was well written. Particularly where he's changing forms as he declares his hatred for Hohenheim.

Robie is right, but is very touching that at the climax of the music he says "to my father" and Ed cries because he is his brother in the end and all he wanted was to be recognized by the father he loathed for so long

Kimblee was only a floppy mess in 2003 because they literally only had a name, a face, and a vague powerset to work with. Manga Kimblee didn't have any actual characterization at the time.

I do know the 03 show had to wait on the mangaka to finish up a good portion until she told them to just do whatever which made multiple characters either better or worst than the manga counterpart Kimblee, Lust, and Envy being the best examples of this. But even with the terrible 03 Kimblee, that anime is still awesome. And 03 had multiverse so both are technically canon in their respective universes XD

I still have difficulty deciding which Envy is better... Edit: I'm well aware the Envy from Brotherhood is the OG deal and a perfect representation as to a resentful non-human, not to mention the basic concept of envy. Buuut... I love how this Envy makes more use of his shapeshifting abilities, in addition to being a far better fighter. And the reveal that he's Hohenheim's son was a *very* interesting twist. I also find it ironic that even though this Envy wasn't responsible for instigating the Ishvalan massacre (arguably OG!Envy's most atrocious act), he's a FAR bigger prick in comparison.

That would’ve been jarring to see Envy as either Ed or his true form in CoS, rather than a dragon. It would have been game-breaking if Amestrian’s/Homunculi like Ed and Envy could use their powers.

It’s hilarious that Envy refers to himself as a pacifist when in the manga/Brotherhood he was the one who started the war in Ishval.

Nah, the Envy is a good fighter in Manga/Brotherhood, is just Ling Yao and Lan Fan are much better fighters; Ling was able to go toe to toe with Bradley which should say something.

I prefer Brotherhood Envy for a few reasons. I think both are entertaining. And, while I do like that FMA envy is a better acrobatic fighter. I wasn't a big fan of him being related to the Elric brothers. Personally, I think the Manga/Brotherhoods version of Envy, is a more interesting interpretation of what envy is and the destruction it can create when left unchecked. 2003's Envy is a jealous child at best. Angry at their father, and his new family by extension, for essentially moving on with his life after a tragic loss. That's not a bad storytelling choice, but I do feel it's somewhat basic. And I'm surprised someone could hold onto that hatred without growing after living for like 400 years. Brotherhoods Envy, on the other hand is multifaceted. There are rifts and correlations that occur as a result of the conclusion. I.E After we learn what Envy is jealous of, all of his previous behavior falls in line with the conclusion. The belittling attitude he has towards everyone. His flippant and toxic behavior/nature. Constantly feeling the need to prop up his existence as a homunculus and is therefore better then humans. The conclusion, Envy being Jealous of humans. Makes complete sense and even managed to shift alot of people's viewpoint on the character. Which I think is an impressive feat. There's more that could be said as well. As Envy's jealousy spawns from several aspects of being human. Not just human connection, which is a common reading among Brotherhood fans. However Ed himself points out several aspects of human nature during that confrontation that we can interpret envy being jealous of. The connection that humans can share. The determination to push through strife again and again regardless of the obstacles that stand in ones way. I almost wanna add more, but I think this works fine as an example. I think some of the other 2003 homunculus are just as interesting as their brotherhood counterparts. But I think I feel this way, moreso for Lust and Sloth, then I do the rest. Ultimately though. That's just my opinion.

The only thing I hated about manga/brotherhood envy was that he sucked at fighting so he was not able to back up his threats and became comedic relief near the end alongside gluttony and sloth. But manga/brotherhood envy was definitely more sadistic than the 2003 version because he enjoyed every person he made suffer while the 2003 version does it because of his hate for hohenheim.

They don't have a gender canonically. In the Japanese they're referred to with 'kono' which is neither masculine nor feminine. So yeah they're not a man and their voice actors all being women isn't a coincidence, they're supposed to be ambiguous.

Sort of, but it's a little more complicated an emotion than that. Envy is wanting what someone else has, *hating* them because they possess what you want, and also wishing harm on them (Ex: You hope that they lose every thing or that you can find a way to steal it from them. In either case, it pleases you to see them struggle and hurt.)

It really sells the idea that Envy became more and more deranged as the show went on. His hatred growing each time he showed up. Though it's probably Wendy Powell getting more comfortable in the role, the effect remains the same: Envy showcasing over time how much of a monster he is.

Because in our world where he went to, there is no alchemy like theirs or any powers, he couldn't transform back and was stuck that way, and I think he transformed into the dragon to have enough power to force himself into the alternate universe

Interesting, I thought of it as not having another body to inhabit in the other side. We know Ed took over another Edward-like body, an Edward of a different dimension. Maybe since Envy couldn't be created from alchemy on the other side there was no alternate place/person for him to exist in that world. So he had to stay in the form of a legendary creature just to exist instead.
