The guitar is a Schecter C-9,

Maybe 2 weeks ago I was really excited to announce an endorsement from Schecter guitars. This was the first thing I asked about "Can I get a 9 string?" I got it in the mail and have been playing it since. It goes down to a C#, making it a step and a half lower then a standard 4 string bass. The biggest criticism I hear about the instrument is that it's taking the whole chug chug 0000 thing to far. I didn't want to write something in the style just yet, I'm sure I'll have fun with that later though. I wanted to write a tune that's heavy and aggressive but also utilizes the instruments full range. So here's what I came up with. Lots of fast riffs and huge stretches. The name is in tribute to a local band from back in my high school days called Jerome.

    When I first heard of 9 strings, I thought about bassists and their position in the modern soundscape. Now that I am listening to it, I think bassists can be at ease. Not only 9 strings don't challenge the bass, it actually reveals its importance. When one hears the flabby lows of 8/9 string, they start to appreciate the deep and assuring foundation a bass gives to a song that's sometimes taken for granted. An unsaturated bass is important with 8/9 strings though, to help separate it from the saturated 9 string lows. I see many bassists these days trying hard to 'compete' with guitarists using fuzz / OD / distortion etc. It's important to know your position in the soundscape because you're a lot more important than you think.

    Yeah. It's not the range, it's the tone. I heard a song that used 3 basses and no guitars and it sounded like it lacked something. They are different instruments because they sound different.

    ***** Absolutely, dude. I record at home and loved all of my songs (drums and 7-string guitar only) until I heard a buddy throw some bass on one of them. It was like, everything the song was missing came together with that one addition. Now when people ask, "Why tune so low, why not just play a bass?" I have a definitive answer.

    how could you think that a guitar could replace a bass? are you a musician? Do you think that the same distortion is used in both instruments? Same amplifiers? have you been playing for a week? Not just sound different, but their "positions" is completely different

  • @the80386

    @the80386

    "how could you think that a guitar could replace a bass?" - I didn't say anything about one replacing another. I was talking about the shrinking gap between them from a mixer's perspective, since many new-coming bands I work with use heavily overdriven bass, making them occupy almost the same frequency ranges as the guitars. That makes the job harder to give them a cosy little place in the frequency spectrum so that each of them stand out. "are you a musician?" - yes, multi instrumentalist, primarily bassist. mostly finding myself on the desk these days, mixing other people's work". Do you think that the same distortion is used in both instruments? Same amplifiers?"- of course not, but the fundamentals are same. I think you'll agree that any distortion saturate the transients forming lots of upper harmonics that fill up the upper mids, smudging the difference between a bass and a guitar more and more as you keep pushing. I was talking in terms of occupied frequency, not the person playing them. "Not just sound different, but their "positions" is completely different" - if you didn't rush through my comment you'd have seen that was precisely the point I made.

    So, a misconception about 7/8/9 string guitars: They are not meant to butt out bassists. Anyone who says that doesn't really know what a bassist does, because for most songs guitars and basses have different roles for at least a portion of the song. Glass Cloud is a good example of this (as well as a wonderful band in general).

    BeatBay no you're just chatting shit, guitars fill the majority of the spectrum no matter what tuning they are in aslong as you have a good tone, and the bass provides a different dynamic to the guitar, and can be played in the same octave as the guitat (which is very common practice at low tunings) yet it will still add bass to the mix

    Ironically, I see 9 strings as more useful for jazz, jazz fusion, or any other genre that can accommodate guitars playing bass lines.

  • @oakenguitar3

    @oakenguitar3

    9 жыл бұрын

    true but it depends on the setting and the requirements of the group you're playing with or if you're playing alone. 9 strings are almost strictly better for solo performance regardless of the genre, its like playing solo piano. When I was in jazz band in high school, I was asked to omit any bass note in all the chords I played and to let the base player play those notes. If I played rhythm with a piano player, I was asked to omit notes sometimes and focus on playing the chord extensions such as a 9th to make the chords sound less muddy or to avoid playing an unpleasant voicing stepping on the toes of the piano player.
