    I just did one on an 04, i read in alldata that the fan speed pid doesn't necessarily match the actually speed and could be off by as much as 800 rpm. Wow i'm glad they could tell us. Mine was a slow spinning fan. I pulled the whole fan, clutch and shroud as one unit, what a sob. I wore gloves or i would have looked like night of the living dead. I think i may try your way next time. unfortunately i'm sure there will be plenty of next times.

    James Danner P0483 if fan rpm is over 1000 rpm different than commanded or command is at 100% for more than 100 seconds. It doesn't really say slow fan for the code but mine was so i figured it was a slow fan code.

    My sons 2002 trailblazer with the 4.2 was clanking when he would start it up . It would run a little warm . We just replaced the water pump and the fan clutch. Now the fan is running right along with engine speed ( it doesn’t slip or slow down) I’m thinking I got a bad part (witch sucks these are not fun to change ) is there anything I may have missed that would keep the fan engaged?

    james, my question is the pcm controls the relay is that relay solid state ? I think the relay control the fan trough duty cycle is that right ?

  • @jamesdanner7850

    @jamesdanner7850

    10 жыл бұрын

    id be lying if i said yes to the solid state part,didnt look into it, but you are prob right. and yes the pcm duty cycles the relay because the fan assy would draw too many amps. i just checked the signal at the fan on the load side of relay because if its good there , the whole circuit is good

    NO NEED to remove coolant hose, belt, or shroud. It takes some finesse, but there is enough room to wrestle the fan and clutch toward the driver's side. No need to pull the fan blade all the way out, just get enough clearance to swap the clutch.

    Okay..I am commenting at 1:08 and even though this is not related to this p0495 code I just had to mention story because it relates to this goofy circuit. I had the same vehicle with a 5vRef code and about 5 other sensor codes..cant remember exactly what, but it ended up being the goofy coolant fan speed sensor shorted pulling the whole 5vRef circuit to ground and causing limp in mode and assorted headaches for the customer. I was sure glad it turned out to be this sensor however, because it was the second to last one on the 5vRef circuit I tested by unplugging. The next and last one was the fuel tank pressure sensor lol. Anyways..back to the vid now :)

    Can this cause the truck to sound like a diesel truck it makes more noise as it accelerates

  • @gingerandreiovici1840

    Hey James thanks for the video my 04 Trailblazer threw a P0526(fan speed sensor circuit) and when the wife got home it was running loud and lacked power. I test drove it down the street and I could hear a load blowing noise from the fan and struggling to gain speed. So I read a bit on the code and one test said to unplug the harness at the fan to see if it disengages, well it did got power back but when I take off I hear a load noise like the exhaust is touching against metal and then it quiets down. No overheating. If I really press the gas it up shifts and the noise gets louder. I don't know if this is mechanical(fan clutch itself) or electrical sensors, wires etc. Let me know if you have any suggestions and thanks in advance.

  • @jamesdanner7850

    @jamesdanner7850

    Well. Its a viscous clutch like the older styles that allow hydraulic fluid to move between chambers under a heat load. But this kind uses an electric valve that's controlled by the computer. But they can fail mechanically. And if the valve sticks in the full "on" position it will do what u described and the built in rpm sensor will show the computer that its spinning faster than it should be and set a code. With the engine off is it hard to turn physically? It should move by hand easily. The other thing is the fan at full speed at higher rpms will take its toll on the water pump

  • @gingerandreiovici1840

    @gingerandreiovici1840

    +James Danner Hi and thanks for answering yes with the engine off I can turn it by hand but it doesn't spin freely, it feels like it has a belt on it and I have to turn it one blade at a time. Again I reset the codes the car runs OK for now as far as it not having power, but when I take off from stand still I hear some weird metal on metal noise(like a metal trash can dragged on the ground really quick) it goes away as soon as I pick up a little speed and it only comes again if I press hard to go or upshift the tranny to pass, and I doubt it's the motor mounts, since the fan code and loud fan noise from before I do think the fan is struggling inside with engage disengage. But on another site the guy mentions to test for engaging and then pull the fan connector with engine off to see disengaging, and if that happens it's electrical. Don't want to buy the fan until I get some kind of conformation that it's related. I know GM is notorious for symptoms that don't go away with the obvious repairs associated with them.

    I was gonna say engine mount before I read full reply. U could duplicate that with a "brake torque". Hold the brakes hard and give it a light to medium throttle snap while in gear, to see if u can duplicate the noise without car moving

    +James Danner I will do it in the morning but the car went into the limp like mode again, and it was just sitting there so high fan again right after start and I didn't drive it anymore due to lack of power. These Trailblazers are like the space shuttle the blow up when you least expect it. Mine has 60k miles and I put a new cat in it, the old one plugged up completely, never seen anything like it. Really sensitive car.

    +Ginger Andreiovici I ordered the fan with the harness and the water pump. It always acts up in the morning and if I unplug harness it disengages. And now it makes a noise at idle after resetting the fan it sounds like broken metal pieces rattling around in there. I am sure something is broken out of all the parts I ordered. What's the best collant for this?

    Hi james hopefully you can help me. I replaced this fan clutch because it was stuck and wasn't spinning And the Vehicle overheated. The new clutch i installed was making a clicking noise and my tb was runnin hoter than usual so i replaced it again but it didn't changed anything it's still making the clicking noise and the temperature gauge is in the 3rd quarter. I already replaced the thermostat and updated the pcm I can control the fan with my scanner to 100% but i can hear the clutch clicking when i command it to engage. Should i replace the clutch again w a different brand? Or what else do you think i can check. Thanks

    My 04 Trailblazer clutch fan was bad when I bought it at 65,000 miles. I knew this because the a/c would not work when u 1st start the engine. The blade would turn but not fast and u could safely stop it with your hand. I took it to a shop and they wanted to do an a/c service. I never had a code but the car was running on reduce power. I found this out because after changing the fan, the car would really haul ass. Trailblazers are really picky about u not fixing what's wrong. I had a bad thermostat and a check engine light for 3 months. The car only got 15.5 n the city. After replacing the stat, the mpg went back to 16.8.

  • @blackericdenice

    James Danner No because once u got going the fan would start to turn fast enough that if I came to a stop. The a/c would work and the engine stayed cool. But I guess the fan didn't turn as fast as the computer wanted that's y it reduce power. I left out a detail. The transmission started to shift hard going to 2nd. gear and I got 2 codes. 1 code was 21xx and the other was 1xxx. (Sorry I don't remember) I went online and one had to do with either paddle position or throttle sensor. In any case, it said don't replace either sensor but to replace clutch fan. I knew I needed a CF, so I went to GM because some people said to only use GM clutch fan I could now hear the fan blowing when I start the engine but it would quiet down after a few seconds. The transmission still shift hard for 135 miles but stop after that. This was 4.5 years ago

    I've seen bad throttle bodies on these. id be half tempted to clean the soot out of it first cause they like to cake up. but make sure you know someone who has a scan tool that can do the module reset function which is the throttle body position sensor minimum reset, or you will have racing idle issues

    James, I just had my fan clutch replaced yesteday and now when i sit in it the entire cabin vibrates. I started it after taking the belt off and vibrations were gone. The fan looks like it pushed forward out of the shroud and seems wobbly, but seems to spin and work correctly. Do you have any input? On top of that when I put the belt back on and started it, my new fan clutch was roaring like the old one. Very frustrating lol

    Unfortunately the fan has to slip off over the water pump nut. When engine is running is it pulling air thru radiator and blowing at engine or is it pushing air back thru rad

    James Danner Thank you for your answer. Yes the fan works at lower speed when the engine rpm are higher, that’s why I’m sure the computer is controlling. But I’m not sure if it is supposed to be engaged all the time, the temperature gauge is at 165•F when it’s supposed to be higher right? I also replaced ect sensor and thermostat, I know the sensor is working fine based on what I see on the scanner but I think the thermostat hasn’t been able to open due to the coolant temperature. Thank you

    U would need more air movement at idle when not getting air from just driving. As far as how cool it runs . I see a lot of gms run cool. Fan movement shouldn't effect internal engine temp that much. . The thermostat will open when it needs to

    so u have 3 issues?. id guess you could have a bad engine mount and when u accelerate, the fan hits the shroud. id also guess that the throttle body is very dirty and idle is too low and can't compensate for AC load. clean and force idle relearn with a scanner. the last one though, is it low on power also?
