Environment as a Character: Black Coal, Thin Ice

Фильм және анимация

The heavy, enveloping, delightfully random atmosphere of "Black Coal, Thin Ice" externalizes the emotions of its characters, and subverts the film noir genre.

Hey, great video! Black coal thin ice is one of my favourite movies I’ve watched recently, and the setting/atmosphere was a major reason why. It was great to hear you articulate all the merits of those aspects!

This was an extremely interesting film noir. I really didn't think the themes of film noir would work so well but it does. I love the way the director uses these bright colors to offset the cold and bleak conditions.

Good insights. The director's follow up was also as great as this imo. Looking forward to anything this guy makes in the future.

Just watched this great movie & found your vid on this & watched half of your Woo one too ... It would be great to see video essays on great movie scenes with ice skating and roller skating ... Ice skating I'd have to think about ... Roller of course there's the obvious suspects like Xanadu and Rollerboogie -- although my own favorite might have to be Bogdanovich's "They All Laughed" -- to say nothing of the tragically mind-blowing (on a 4th wall level) palm reading scene rinkside ... Anyhoo, I'll check out more of your stuff ...

Hey we need to talk about movies like The Proposition… Why is this movie not more popular??? It’s incredible and it just makes me wonder how many other incredible works of modern cinema are hidden out there waiting to be recognized.

I think films getting the recognition they deserve is often a matter of luck and timing, even when they’re fantastic. Also the more films I watch, the more I realize what *is* popular often has roots in something else great that never found wide appeal - some of the reasons I started this channel.

@@warpathh I will! I don’t have anything like that at this time - need to look into a subreddit or something maybe, but for now people often recommend stuff in the comments!

@@WildFlicks Ok some solid ideas coming your way in other comments. Castaway on the Moon (Korean), Blue Ruin, Brotherhood of the Wolf (French), come to mind in terms of films that deserve spotlights.

What's your opinion about ending? Is she still hiding something, was that laundry owner giving her a red scarf some hint? Anyways, lovely video, I really love this movie.

I'm really happy that something as sophisticated as this film came from mainland China. I would have expected it to be from Taiwan. The impression I've been having is that Japan and South Korea know how to bring it while China delivers derivative cheese thanks to their more authoritarian and socially conservative culture. Sometimes I'm happy to be wrong.
