Environment Art Mastery: Year One Review, Showcase and Lessons Learned!

You can become a complete environment artist by learning the entire workflow of 3D level art creation!
One year ago I released Environment Art Mastery, a complete guide to environment art. In this video, I review the previous year and demonstrate the results achieved by members of all skill levels and walks of life. What these works all have in common is variety: each of these talented individuals came up with an idea for an environment and following the steps outlined in the course, created their own 3D worlds.
I had the honor of observing and mentoring several of the members, learning quite a lot in the process. In them, I identified five qualities (or character traits) to master to become a world-class environment artist. I then chose five members who demonstrated one of these aspects clearly, for illustration. They are by no means the only members who did so. The group is composed of many talented and passionate artists. These are just examples that I picked so we can all learn.
My intention with this video is to show how anyone can make amazing environments, shortening the path to get to a high level by avoiding common mistakes and developing their own process for creating environments. First, you follow my program once, then you can mix and match and adapt depending on the situation, being able to tackle 3D level art challenges fearlessly.
Disclaimer: The vast majority of users showcased here already had knowledge of common 3D environment art tools, for example, Unreal Engine, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Autodesk Maya, 3D studio max, Blender, Adobe Photoshop, Quixel Mixer, or Unity Engine, to name a few. If you are not familiar with at least one or two (ideally three) of those software, then this tutorial is NOT for you! Better to start with free tutorials on KZread just to get the hang of it.
This course is for those who CAN already make simple 3D scenes, 3D models, props, or small art level art corners, but who struggle to create 3D environments from scratch, by themselves, without following a concept art piece. This course is also for professionals who already dominate environment art, but who want to refine their workflow and be able to work much faster and efficiently, by having a fool-proof method to fall back to when in roadblocks, or by being able to make much more complex scenes by simplifying and avoiding common environment art creation problems.
I dedicate this course to all the teachers and co-workers that I had (and have) in life, who not only taught me valuable lessons for free, but who also encouraged me, gave constructive feedback, or kicked my ass when I needed :p and also to my family, without whom I wouldn’t be who I am, and most especially to my (soon-to-be) wife, who not only shares the most precious moments of life with me but also whose support and love made it much easier to execute this ❤️ I love you kuti kuti 😘
I wish you all the best in your environment art journey… May you make amazing environments that will open the doors to realize your dreams!

    I loved this video! It really filled me with excitement to not only see my work here and what you said about me as an artist, but also to see the progress we as a community have made together. It's been a wonderful year, definitely the course has been the best decision I've made for my career and I'm so grateful that you decided to share your knowledge with us. I'm looking forward to see what the finished projects will look like!✨

    Thank you so much for such warm words Sandra, it’s a pleasure to have you in the community (one of the very first ones, I think you got it in the first pre sale, limited to 10 people only haha). It’s been awesome to see your fast evolution, your last environment looks sick. I’m looking forward to seeing you building another one! Keep up the hard work, the results are truly staggering if you compare.

    Thatis a very good point. A lot of people want to get hired at Blizzard/Riot tomorrow. But it takes years and years to develop the skills and experience needed to become an attractive employee for these companies. No matter how naturally talented the person is, it takes time to simmer and absorb experience :)

    I've been eyeing this course ever since I stumbled upon your Zest Foundation modular environment breakdown a couple months ago while working on my first environment for my game art diploma. After graduating, I still feel super lacking and what you said about process and five qualities reminded me of the passion I had when I first started 3D a year ago. :'D This video convinced me to start the course (after I sort out cross-country moving) and get back to work.

  • @TKEnvironments

    @TKEnvironments

    10 ай бұрын

    Hey! I use Unreal engine in the course, but I also use Unity on personal projects. I’d say 95% of the information carries over. What differs on Unity is how Unity handles asset import, while in Unreal they get imported as static mesh actors, in Unity they are generic prefabs and you need to do a bit of prep work to iterate quickly. All in all, in regards to the tools I use in the tutorial, the only major part that comes to mind is the asset import pipeline, the rest is very similar on both engines. I don’t cover foliage in the tutorial. Most of the foliage came from a pack by Nastya Ermakova. Cheers!

    My main struggle is, after I'm done with the blockout I am never quite sure if I will be able to make it look good by going through the rest of the process :D As a blockout it looks very uninteresting because it's supposed to be simple, even though I KNOW that it gets better as I progress, I still lose some motivation to push through...

  • @TKEnvironments

    @TKEnvironments

    Yep, that's a common struggle :) It's all about mindset. Keep on pushing and believing it will work out, and one day things magically fall into place. It's like the universe rewards you for the hard work and belief. At least that's been my experience :)

    This course looks amazing, Thiago! Congrats on the 1 year!! 🙌🙌 I have a question about the different editions. Does the Standard edition include all 23 chapters? Or is it only in the Advanced edition?

  • @TKEnvironments

    @TKEnvironments

    10 ай бұрын

    Hello! The biggest difference is that Advanced version includes a lot more videos covering different aspects of the Spanish Town, these are mostly texturing and asset creation videos. It also includes the Stylized Texturing tutorial. The standard contains the full course minus the asset creation tutorials.

    Hey Thiago! I’m learning so much from your course so far. I had a question and not sure where to ask so I’ll try here. Do I need a certain version of Unreal to import your TK Tools? When I try to copy to the content folder they aren’t there upon opening and if I drag and drop I get a “failed to import uasset” I’m using 5.2. Do I need to go down a couple versions? Thanks again!

    Hey Thiago; I was wondering if there is ever going to be a spot available for the master edition in the near future? I have the advanced edition, I am 8 months into the course ( reached chapter 17 just now) and I could really use some feedback because I am struggling a bit. I have a good base scene but I have some areas that I can't figure out 100%. I could really use some feedback from a person with your background and skillset :D thanks in advance for your time and answer!

    Is there need to use bake light in Unreal Engine 5 ? Cause now a days lumen is available there. And is there need to bake light in UE5 if there are too much foliage in map ? I am new in unreal engine.

  • @TKEnvironments

    @TKEnvironments

    7 ай бұрын

    Baked lighting performs much much better than lumen. For example, if you have a top PC, with lumen in 4k you will be hard pressed to reach 100 frames or so. But with baked lighting you could easily hit 400 (not that you need, but just showing the point). Baked lighting is the way to go for realistic VR experiences, mobile, some consoles etc... But for personal projects that won't be released as a game, it doesn't matter :)

    I never had a sale for this tutorial for two reasons: 1) In order for it to be sustainable in the long term since I'm putting in so much work 2) To not punish people who buy at full price. This creates unnecessary anxiety in people. But since this is a very special occasion and inflation has been running rampant all over the world, I will open an exceptional exception: Any member on record on my Gumroad (anyone who downloaded or purchased a tutorial before and still doesn't own the Environment Art Mastery) will receive a time-limited coupon to help with the purchase. I will send it in a few hours. This will be the only time I do this.

    I totally understand. The Discord communtiy needs to be kept small because otherwise it's unmanageable and I simply won't be able to handle it. But I have something in mind that will bring together all the other tiers and cover what you are suggesting - a forum :) That's something that's been on my mind for quite a while and I will start looking into options in the coming weeks. I like Discord but things get lost easily... in a forum the information can be categorized better, it's easier for people to keep a journal etc...
