In today's video, I'm going to be going over how to make a budget using the envelope system. This is also sometimes called the cash only budget or the clip system if you follow Rachel Cruze.
Subscribe for weekly finance videos: / @nextlevellife
In a nutshell, the envelope method of budgeting forces you to make your purchases with cash that you have separated into various envelopes labeled by category. Some examples of categories include groceries, eating out, transportation/gas costs, and entertainment expenses.
As you can tell these categories are all variable from month to month. Things like mortgage or rent are not always included in the envelope method (or at least most people don't fill an envelope labeled "mortgage" every month. They just have it paid from their bank automatically).
The goal of this budgeting method is to control spending (and by extension avoid debt) by forcing you to make your purchases in cash.

Will give it a go this week. Personally know of a family who uses this method and it works well for them. Onto their second investment property now.

Is there an envelope to account for the increased spending on envelopes if you need a new set every month (if you track your spending my writing on them during each month)?

I just realized it’s the last day of the month and I have $315 of unspent money that had been planned to be spent this month. That is to say, ignoring money already allocated to savings. Nice! Thanks YNAB!

I think I’d go crazy with all the different envelopes. Seems very tedious to handle all that cash all the time.

I did too. So I take out money for my expenses when I get paid, every two weeks, and keep track of every dollar spent on the EveryDollar App (Dave Ramsey's App). This way I don't have to carry envelopes with me. I just posted a video on How to Get Out of Debt: 7 Reasons to Only Use Cash. Which shows how to save money by only using cash. In case this topic interests you. Take care.

Biweekly Low income Cannot do full grocery till end of month? I'd like to try this envelope system. Might have to tweak it alittle and fill at end of the month. Because once I pay rent at the beginning of month, not much to play with afterwards. So, its pretty much. Rent, maintain gas for car, grocery necessity, what my daughter needs for a medical problem and emergency money. Any other videos for biweekly strategy and low income? SUBSCRIBED! THANK YOU😊

I saw your comment and wanted to possibly help. I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's medical problems. I have 3 kids and between their specialists, regular doctor visits and prescriptions, it can really take a toll. I just posted a video called How to Get Out of Debt: 7 Reasons to Only Use Cash which offers some money saving tips by only using cash. I hope you find it helpful.
