@@carpediem327 Hey, thanks for watching this video 😃 I did not have to whiteboard for this job interview but I did have to solve problems on a computer working with 2 other devs (they weren’t able to book the room that had the whiteboard in it so that had the next beat thing). For other interviews, I did have to solve problems on a whiteboard.

Best counter offer statement I ever heard was when you counter with something higher than you know they can match and they tell you no.....you deadly serious say: 'Well how close can you get?'

The none counter. Haha. I've done this before, but in the welding field. I was like I'll take $20/hr. The hiring manager was like okay, we can start you at $23/hr because I rather not have you ask for money in a few weeks. Lolol. I was like sweet. Where do I sign?! Haha

Wow this would literally be my dream job posting lol. Currently hunting for my first jr dev job and Im coming from being a leasing manager for 7 years. yardi and all those programs I am advanced at. I need to get off of indeed and start calling some property managers

Yes and even $50k five years ago seems bargain basement low! That’s $26/hr for someone with an IT Bachelors, experience teaching and developer experience?!? Hindsight is 20-20. Lesson learned!

My first dev job annual pay was 45k and I also didn't know any better as far as negotiation. I was also in a super toxic environment then so I know I wouldn't have felt comfortable haha.

Yikes, toxic environments are no bueno! Glad you were able to move on from that job. I'm glad I know more about negotiating now - I didn't know enough about negotiation and was also very nervous about it those days to go through with it.

Thank you for this video, it’s really helpful in understanding what my future experience could be like. I’m just beginning to learn coding. I’ve started with HTML, and will start CSS soon. I’m curious about full stack, because I want to create my own app one day as it’s a project I would like to do for myself. Including a site for my own business, but I’d also like to become a software engineer. I’m stuck between the two, would it be okay to do both? Could you please advise me on this? 😊 I have the opportunity to do a free bootcamp- I can I keep between software engineering or web development, I want to do both. I could pick one and learn the other on my own time. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Hi Jessica, definitely pick either - dev skills are they pretty easy to pick up. Once you’ve learned a language for instance Javascript, other languages such as Python are easier to learn. I do recommend Javascript if you’re wanted to do full stack since you can build an entire app with Javascript.

But I think I’m going to go for the web development/ full stack bootcamp to start as I have an interest in it. And learn more about software engineering after. Thank you! 😌

Is there room for negotiation? Great phrasing of the question. I am gonna go and apply it that today, as I didn't know how to word this for my first contract as a web dev.

It's a nice way to phrase it, but comes across as you're unsure of yourself. Being nice will help you a lot but in this context, a good negotiator will smell blood in the water at that point and they'll call your bluff. You just need to be gutsy and say "I would love to earn $X" and expect them to counter. Sometimes they don't, and you can celebrate!

I noticed that you said that you had a bachelor's degree with some computer science classes. You don't even have to have a bachelor's degree for any kind of programming job.. usually 99.9% of companies will give you a coding interview to see if you carry the needed knowledge for the job. If you can pass the coding interview they'll hire you usually. But that piece of paper doesn't mean anything. And nowadays college degrees don't carry the weight They Carried 30 years ago.

Though a degree is not needed, I received mine over 10 years ago when bootcamps weren’t popular and recruiters were more brutal with their qualifications. These days, people still get CS degrees if they decide they want to - Everyone has their own path and that’s okay.

When you counter back is their a certain range that you should stay in ? Like if they offer 50,000 should you only counter within a certain amount ?

For me, if they offered $50, I would ask within $10-15k of that amount. Now, it’s also important to check the job description- do they mention the salary range there? Also, check online to see what others are making with your level of experience.

Was it your plan to stay for 6 months or did it just work out like that?

There’s not a one size all solution for what you’re asking. If you want to have a traditional approach to coding and can afford (time and money) to get a computer science degree, then go that route. On the other hand, if not, then go for the other option. Every program is different - Ask them questions about what they are teaching and the result they expect a student to gain after their program.

What kind of problems are you referring to?

50,000 seems kind of low for a web developer salary. Is this still the entry level salary? I know a lot of positions now are paying at least 70,000 base and I wouldn't ask for not a dime under that.

Do you think I could get hired as a junior.developer if I live in nicaragua?

@@salladiallo9766 Salary is going to be dependent on experience and the industry you are working in. If I had to ballpark it, I’d say $50k but do know that that’s not always the case. The number could be higher or lower depending on a lot of factors.
