I’m watching this again as I prepare to get my enstete banana plant out of dormancy 🤞🏽

My ensete survived in the garage, cut off the leafs, washed the roots, wapped it with horticultural fleece and after it went to sleep for at least 5 month in the dark. In spring I had to cut off the top of the pseudostem and some rotting layers. There was no heating probably the temperature was around 5-7 C inside. The outer layer dried off and looked like a white colorless bumerang, in three weeks it recovered and started to grow outside this April. Its now beatiful as it was last year. Its notable that despite it was put horizontally and got zero light, it continued to grow a new leaf, that died in January. Pretty resistant plant and stops growing only after period of cold October rains in zone 7b.

One of the only videos Ive seen that showed the after wintering and spring regrowth. Well done

I usually over winter mine in our enclosed car port but it’s so big now we can hardly get it round the side of the house! Plus I have so many tropical plants in pots there’s hardly room for a car. I will definitely be trying this for winter 2022. Thank you for a really useful video

Great video, thank you. Do you know if you can propagate clones by slicing the tuber/root ball during this dormant period? Would love to see a vid on that if you have done this.

At the top you can punch holes for it or drill holes through the middle to allow it to aerate and dry a lot quicker. You should also cover the top with dry hay and net it in place for no rott.

looked at my banana yesterday it had rotted Thanks to you I now know how to store properly so will be getting a new one or two this year

My banana had mould on it, so I thought it was dead and chucked it. Now I'm wondering if I could of saved it. 😩 Love the look of them so might try again this year.

Hi Craig. Great Vlog with really helpful info. This winter I've tried propogating my 2 year old ensete. Split root ball into 4 after drying. Good roots developed but no shoots on surface yet. I'll let you know if I have any success. Cheers

very helpfull video..I just bought one ensete in a 12inch pot from home depot. I am in zone 9b. Will i need to store in winter the way you did? And what was the pot size of your white pot you put it back in next spring? how many years can I leave it in the 12inch pot that it came in before i will need to repot?

Loving your channel as I try to plan my own tropical garden for the first time! Am I right in thinking this guide would apply to the Musa Basjoo too? I’ve got one on order as well as some Castor Oil seeds and Canna chocolate sunrise bulbs. Need something to do on the weekends in isolation! 😄

Tropical Tribe thanks mate, I think I ordered the Castor Oil seeds through the Sutton’s link on your site 👍🏼 I’ve found loads of great plant ideas through your videos but with everything that’s going on I can’t get anything ordered and I’m still waiting for my original orders 😭 on a side note I’m not sure if you’re aware but your website seems to be down and your links aren’t working atm

I live in Pennsylvania where we get substantially below freezing for much of the winter. I fear the deep freeze will be too much. My basement stays in the 60 degree range. Will the basement be sufficiently cold? Also, is it better to do your propagation method before or after the winter storage? Thanks so much for the videos and any help you can give.

Absolutely brilliant vid 👌 I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but if I don't dry store and it comes into a room in the house, I don't need to remove all of those lovely leaves and can keep it potted?

If you bring it into a bright room you can keep a couple of leaves on it for sure. They tend to go crispy in houses with central heating though 🙂

This my first year growing bananas and I’m watching this video once again hoping I can get it through the winter. The plant is looking spectacular around 6-7 feet tall and still has 15 amazing leaves, I’m not looking forward to chopping it down. What are the critical temperatures I should be looking at before making that decision ? I don’t want to see it go but I also don’t want to wait too long and lose it. Nighttime temperatures hear in NE England are around 9C for the next week, I would appreciate some advice, I love the channel and it’s been invaluable in my first year growing tropicals

Hi Colin, we tend to leave our bananas out until temps drop close to 5 degrees Celsius. So long as they are not too wet then it shouldnt be a problem 👍🙂 Thanks for watching 🪴

Good vid m8! If you want to go even bolder/braver, try this method ive used for a couple of years now: - remove all roots (literally all of it!). I cut less then 1cm from the base, straigh down, and remove all at bottom of the rhizome. - stick the stem in a small amount (5-6") of dry substrate, usually a bag of potting mix that has been stored dry.... All else is same as your method I never seen any black rotting spots after coming out of storage, and typically i have roots formed already in very early spring! Ive realized that hosing down the roots does the opposite of what your aiming for: it adds water! Just maticulously remove the roots and any soil with a knife. Better: when doing bananas, get a machete! PS: i've had some monster ensetes that were well over 1m circumference at the base - and im in a moderate zone 8a climate to what i expect is pretty similar to yours!

Love your video. I have a question rather off subject. When you dug up your banana there was an umbrella type plant in the ground beside the banana at the 1.38 mark. What treatment have you given that plant in the ground. I see cement all around it. I know this plant spreads and needs lots of water. Thanks for taking your time. Carol

Hi Carol, that plant is growing in a pot that is submerged. They do spread so it's best to keep the roots contained 👍🪴

Hey, thanks for the informative video! Have just bought a baby plant in about a litre of soil. Wanted to ask (as I am very new to tropical plants) whether this process is necessary if I’m planning on keeping this plant indoors? Also what is the growth rate of this plant? Thanks!

Hi, no you can just bring the pot indoors and grow it as a houseplant. Keep the soil quite dry though 👍

I'm surprised how small the root ball is compared to this dwarf Cavendish I have. I bring the Cavendish indoors in the winter but I don't want it in a ridiculously large pot

Quick question as I definitely will try this method: Will it take longer to come out of dormancy with this dry method vs just storing in soil, potted up but in a cool basement over winter? I want mine to get larger each year and this method looks much easier than trying to lug a heavy, half dead basement potted plant. Thanks, outstanding video!

Hello, it is slower to get going again as it has to reestablish a good root system. However, you are right, it is definitely easier to move! 🙂

@@GrowParadise Cool. I may pot it up in late March as my normal last freeze is by April, but I like to plant non hardys in early May as ground warms. With a pot, I can move back in during an April frost or freeze, if needed and hopefully it wakes up by May for good in ground growth! Thanks for replying back😀

I have a new one growing and 2 leaves were broken 😢 should i cut them off or keep them on? (New to these banana plants)

I am fortunate enough to have a unit with a spare store room that I have converted with an LED light, heater and fan to keep the temp in there to around 15-20 degrees to keep my two potted plants, one question I have is when would you normally plant back outside? I left it until April last year and they didn’t grow that well so I thought that I would try earlier this year.

Sound like the perfect spot! I’m in the South of the UK and can sometimes get away with March if it’s particularly mild.

What month in the UK would you start the process?

Thanks for the Great video, looking forward to mine being this size. I have just purchased a young plant approx 30cm high , and have positioned it ,in a pot in full sun in my garden “ up north “ in Uk and noticed the leaves are either dying along one side or they,re getting sun burn, I,m looking at putting it under my tree for some shade. Any ideas please.

As a young plant it was probably grown in a greenhouse. Keep it in semi shade with plenty of water and feed and it should soon perk up 👍🌱

One last question, is is not possible to overwinter them in a conservatory rather than chopping the leaves off and starting all over again each year ? I did that with my elephant ear plant , it went a bit limp but survived and growing strong again.

Yes you can do that, just water it much less as if it gets soggy it may start to rot 🙂🌴

I’ve had jumpsuit variety in the ground for about 12 years Philadelphia north east USA area this year it grew a flower the size of a coconut and started growing bananas and then December came with the cool weather However if they come back every year I don’t have to touch them anymore are used to cut them down and cover with leaf mulch now I let nature drop them and they come back 20 feet this year with fruit I think I’m the only crazy man in the state that grows bananas

I'm going to have mine as a house plant in the conservatory over winter. People say it's more reliable than dry storing. What do you think?

I’ve seen both work, just keep it on the drier side and I think that will work fine 👍🙂

If I live in Sacramento, CA where the temperature in the Winter will not get lower than 40 degree. Do I still need to take it in the garage? Please advise.

They just need to be kept dry and frost free if you are going to store them like this 👍 anywhere with those conditions is fine 🙂

Tropical Tribe, Great Video, thanks! So to recap on your answer to Sacramento, CA: Will overwintering dry in a garage with temperature fluctuations between 40 and 60 degrees F. still be viable, or is the 60 F. too warm?

I ordered an Ensete Maurelli this year, it arrived in early Summer. The plant came in a 2" pot and is already almost as large as the one in your video. I planted mine straight outside, despite being an exposed front garden, most things prosper there. My Musa Acuminatas have put on considerable growth from when I received them, but nothing compared to the E.M. Thank you for the advice video, I was wondering how to go about things. Do you know if the EM will survive over Winter in an unheated garage, or do they not tolerate any frost, let alone say -10 to -15 outside? I doubt the garage would remain frost free in those temperatures.

Hi, mine only just survived in an inheated shed with just below freezing outside. If you've got several plants you can experiment with a few different techniques for over wintering maybe?

Vox, EM needs at least 5°C, 8-10° being sort of ideal for winter.

@@amphetaminelogic7006 Thank you. I love to try and work with tropical plants, but I have had a battle with red spider mite this year. I know that they plague the citrus in the house/ greenhouse. I didn't want to keep the musa / ensete near them. I will follow your advice for temperatures. Thank you.

I've just purchased a Ensete around 60-80cm tall in a 3ltr pot and have put in a upvc shed to over winter, it certainly doesn't get below 4-5 degrees C but its still in its original pot, will this be ok or should i provide more heat and light. thanks

This will be fine, Just be sure to keep it very dry 👍

So I took it out of the pot and I have a significantly longer root system. Do I just leave the root system as is after I wash it clean?

Yes that should be fine. If you see any mould or rot appearing in the roots then you can cut them back 👍🌱

You can do it indoors so long as you can give them the conditions they need 👍

in shed is ok in zone 7? outside can get to 10 F degrees

The ground wasn't quite warm enough when I was filming, it did get planted out for the summer months 👍

Hi. I bought seeds for ensette a month ago. I followed all tge instruction....apart from keeping the temperature at 30 degrees. Is it too early for them to shown signs of.life? Is there anyway they will germinate at this point ? Thanks in advance From the 'trying hard to be a tropical gardener' 😂

Hi Rachel, banana seeds will need reliable heat and moisture to germinate. Have you got them in a heated propagater? Ps: trying hard in itself makes you a tropical gardener 😁🌴🌴🌴🌱🌱🌱🌿🌿🌿

No I haven't. I moved them from my kitchen windowsill to my bedroom windowsill as thats warmer but I guess it isnt warm enough. Looks like i will need to buy a plant and grow that way 🌱
