Enormous harvest of Container Grown Potatoes

I decided to harvest the remaining 7 containers of potatoes this evening.
These are the Sarpo Miras grown in smaller 30 litre pots.
The result was the biggest crop I've ever had of about 75 pounds from the 7 pots with some of the potatoes being enormous.
The first one being almost 13.5 pounds from just a single pot.
So I will continue to grow my spuds this way and grow more of this variety.

During World War Two, the ministry of food in the UK had constructed, thousands of barrel like tube containers, approximately 50 gallon volume in size, placed them in open ground side by side, and planted potato seed in them, as the potato seed sprouted it was lightly covered with soil, this continued right to the top of the barrel, then the potato top grew out freely, each barrel occupied an area of approx nine square feet, when harvesting, the tubes/barrels were simply lifted up and clear, to release their harvest, each barrel produced well over 100lbs of spuds, and it was not unusual to find barrels with almost 200lbs of spuds when harvested, this method and other intense high yield farming techniques were essential when the U boats were sinking millions of tons of British shipping carrying essential food and supplies to the UK. The method was simply called "A Barrel of Spuds".

I was thinking about growing potatoes in some old trash barrels, but wasn’t sure if they would receive adequate light in the beginning. Thanks :) ✌️

Buy 6× 50cm round planters from wilko £5.00 each. charlotte seed potatoes at sarah raven seeds 2kg £10.00. wickes compost 120ltr x 6 £9.99 each. b&q westlands blood fish bone 1× 10kg tub £15.00 and one westlands chicken manure pellets 10kg £15.00. big up front cost but don't have to buy anything but seed potatoes next year and top up and amend compost with fertilizers mentioned above . chit seed potatoes on windowsill middle of march on cardboard egg boxes round end up . One spud each devide once foliage is about 2cms they are ready to plant. fill each container quater full with soil. One handfull each of chicken Manure pellets and blood fish and bone mix in soil.dump two seed potatoes in not too close together then add another quarter soil. add fertalizers one handfull each mix in soil.then add two more seed potatoes but not directly above the ones already planted but like a cross pattern . Fill up with soil. water in and leave. give soil a deep water once a week until the foliage produced starts to die back and turn yellow cut it off then leave the spuds without water for another week then harvest simple. You do not have to hill up soil around shoots bit by bit. put it all in and let the foliage take its time comming up that way it is unlikely that a frost will get to tender shoots before the last frost date. Not everyone has pollytunnels to protect them in.

Great Idea's & great video! I'm not much of a gardener. I may have put out around 12 gardens over the years. I had a acre & a half garden for two yrs. in the barn was 8 year old sheep manure. I spread it evenly over entire garden with eight S-10 truck loads.I planted sweet corn, Beans, cabbage, well all I could plant in Illinois. I had two rows of tators 200 ft. long hilled up about foot & a half high. Once every 3 weeks I watered down the plants with miracle grow from a garden hose. for three months, My tators were shaped like horse shoes. I could put 5 tators in a five gallon bucket that's how big they were. cabbage heads were bigger than a basketball. those two years were the best years I ever had growing in the garden. I wish I had pictures. wanted to share that with you. I recon old sheep manure is worth having.

It's crazy really, they were pushing the soil out of the pots. The secret is to let the roots grow through the drainage holes in the pots so they get all the goodness and moisture from the soil below too. Cheers, Dan.

I have watched a lot of potato harvests and while there are some good digs by Americans it seems like the potato videos from Great Britain always seem to do better. Is it the weather? The soil? A more serious gardening attitude? The potato genetics? Who knows. But I think we need to have some serious Potato Olympics style competition this next year.

Also a lot of folks don't understand there are two types of growers. One type of spud only delivers a few because of the root system while another keeps growing. I think that helps. So many forget to keep them in plenty of sun. I know I had a box I did spuds and sweet taters in and it was the first time trying and I got so many, the size and the flavor so rich. But made sure to have some good soil and dung for it. Mine could of been an accident but one I was glad for.

I live in zone 4. Every year I miss a few potatoes, and the following year they come up again. A couple times I have left them be for a year and checked the second year. Just like other bulbs and tubers, they expand every year. It would be a great crop to hide out in the bush
