ENKI'S HAILSTORM - sung in Sumerian

Музыка

The Sumerian god known as ENKI was god of the waters, and he is often depicted with rivers (possibly the Tigris and the Euphrates) flowing from his shoulders. Although the clay tablets on which this story of Enki was written are 5000 years old, they speak of a time even more remote, the time of creation, when the Sumerian gods (known as the Anunnaki) began organizing the world.
The Sumerian text for this story is taken from a collection of tablets known as GILGAMESH, ENKIDU AND THE NETHER WORLD, and anyone who is interested in the translations and Sumerian transliterations can find them on the University of Oxford website: THE ELECTRONIC TEXT CORPUS OF SUMERIAN LITERATURE.
Some of the other Anunnaki gods who are mentioned in this tale are AN (Enki’s father and god of the heavens), ENLIL (a god of wind and storms), and ERESHKIGAL (queen of the nether world).
The lute that you see me playing at the beginning of this video is a Sumerian “gish-gudi”, the ancient ancestor of lutes that are still found today in Mesopotamia, Persia, Turkey and the Middle East. There are no examples of Sumerian lutes still in existence, they long ago turned to dust, but we do have descriptions of the instruments and a few rare depictions.
I also used a “zurna” a kind of folk oboe that was very popular in ancient times, and still exists throughout the Middle East. With a bit of practice, it is possible to play the zurna using “circular breathing” which provides a constant drone. Unfortunately, it is not possible to sing and play the zurna at the same time!
No one knows what Sumerian music sounded like, but we do know something about the instruments they used. What I have done in this video is to use the musical tools we know were available to the musicians of Sumer, and then allow my own imagination to do the rest.
The walls you see in the background of the video are part of an inner courtyard in the city of Babylon in modern Iraq.

LYRICS BELOW: Here is my transliteration of the lyrics as sung by Mr. Pringle. I have taken the liberty of writing each phonetically as opposed to the syllabic transliteration (which can be misleading). Beneath each is a semi-direct translation of each line. As he notes in the description, the lines are drawn from parts of the composition "Gilgameš, Enkidu, and the Netherworld.” At the bottom I will provide a pronunciation key. If anyone wants, I can also provide the in-depth breakdown of each line. 16: Enki kur-še ba-u-aba Enki, toward the kur, he rode sail to it 11: ud An-e an bande‘a-ba The day An bore the heavens himself 12: Enlil-e ki bande'a-ba The day Enlil bore the lands himself 16: Enki kur-še ba-u-aba Enki, toward the kur, he sailed to it 13: Ereškigal-a-ra kur-a saĝ rig-bi’-še immab-rig'a-ba To Ereškigal the Netherworld it as a gift it had been bestowed [to her] 16: Enki kur-še ba-u-aba Enki, toward the kur, he sailed to it 15: Aya kur-še ba-u-aba The father, toward the Netherworld he sailed to it 17: lugal-ra tur-tur bandari To the king small [ones], toward him was directed 18: Enki-ra gal-gal bandari To Enki great [ones] toward him was directed 19: tur-tur-bi na šu-kam Those small [ones], [like] "hand stone"(hammer) they were 20: gal-gal-bi na gi gu-ud-ak-am Those big [ones], "stone of jumping reed"(catapult) they were 21: ur ma ture Enki-ka-ke The “root”(keel) of the small boat of Enki 22: niĝbun-a du-am mi-šušu [like] turtles pushing [upon] it there, it shakes 23: lugal-ra a masaĝĝa-ke To the king, water [at] prow of the boat 24: urbara-gin teš munagu-e Like wolves united they eat upon it there 25: Enki-ra a ma-eĝer-ra-ke To Enki, water, to the back of the boat 26: urmaḫ-gin saĝ im-ra-ra Like lions, the head(?) they there beat(hit) it --- Pronunciation Key: r= likely a “tapped” [r], never like the English r š= “sh” sound as in English “ship” ĝ= “ng” sound in “ringer” (velar nasal) ḫ= “hard ch” in German “Bach” (velar fricative) An apostrophe [‘] marks the Glottal Stop, which is the break heard in Cockney British pronunciation of the “t” in “British.”16

Additionally, Mr. Pringle if you happen to see this, a couple things I’d like to point out: You mistakenly pronounce the non-phonetic “qualifier” symbols such as “ĝiš“ which are denoted in transliterations by hyperscript text. These are believed to not be actually spoken, but instead serve to identify the semantic class if the word they accompany. While in practice it is admittedly difficult to always identify when a symbol is supposed to be read in such a way(since they can also still occur as regular morphemes), most instances are fairly regular (such such as the sign 𒀭 often appearing next to deities’ names)

@@CristiNeagu i haven’t read the story that this video is based on but it doesn’t seem to be mentioning a flood, rather it seems to be mentioning only a storm which is a relatively common occurrence. On a technical note after the ice age ended water levels rose which increased the likelihood of flooding so technically any flood story is sort of referencing the after affects of the younger dryas and since there was a continuity of culture from the younger dryas to now, all flood stories would reflect the ancestral cultural memories of the floods of that time (the only time people would sort of seen flooding as new would be after the ice age, though since people likely live on higher concentrations on the coasts flooding wouldn’t be alien to them)

@@Rudol_Zeppili As far as I understand, this story is part of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Utnapishtim shows up in the story at some point, and he is the origin of Noah from Genesis. The flood that many cultures around the world refer to was most likely not caused by normal melting of the ice caps. That would take centuries and would be most unlike the abrupt events described in these myths. The floods in question were caused by what is becoming more and more certain to have been a comet impact 11-12,000 years ago, during the Younger Dryas (may have actually caused it). And besides the references to floods, these cultures also reference cataclysms and serpents in the sky (you can believe what you want, but that sounds like a comet to me). There is geological evidence for this impact, as well as evidence of massive meltwater events in North America (the Scablands).

It feels like I'm sitting at the feet of someone telling me an old story, and it makes me feel like I've traveled back in time to ancient Sumeria. I love how educational this whole video is as well. Just the amount of dedication to detail you put into the description and the lyrics is incredible. The way you sing the words is magical and mysterious and the instrument sounds absolutely gorgeous! I'd never actually heard a song sung in Sumerian before, and I'm definitely not disappointed. I love learning about the ancient world, particularly Egypt, Sumeria, Mesopotamia, etc. This just makes me want to immerse myself even more in the history of these wonderful cultures. I'm so happy I found your channel Peter. Thank you so much for posting these!

Nothing else sounds like it. Yet after much searching I still cannot find anyone who will sell me one. In fact it would seem they do not even exist for sale. I would greatly appreciate if you could advise me where you found yours or anywhere that I might obtain one. Thank you in advance, and thank you for your wonderful renditions of ancient Sumerian Music and for bringing this wonderful sounding instrument to my attention. Chris Johns
