This was the arc that sold me on One Piece as an S tier anime. Kinda like Arlong Park was the arc that got most people to invest in the show, this is the arc that took it to the next level. Definitely an absolutely iconic arc that serves as the end of old school One Piece, and an introduction into the grander world/narrative of the show. Can’t wait for you to cover the next few arcs/sagas.

Same this was when I realized one piece was my favorite story of all time

The way I saw the fights was that the CP9 members know all the powers but they don't have full mastery of all of them like Lucci does, that's why I feel that they rely on specific powers like the bullets or the slashing kicks

My Top 1 Arc in all of One Piece. “You’ll find nakama”, “I Want To Live”, “We’re Going Home Together”, Luffy’s final jet gattling gun, the Merrys funeral. All such top tier moments. Imma cry bruh

I still don't get your point regarding powerscaling. Most of the checkboxes you list are better represented as rpg-like stats that take TIME to level up. It's not as simple as "Zoro has checked off the swordsmanship checkbox." It's more like he has Swordsmanship at level 100, and most of his other "stats" are quite low. Sure, he could spend time raising his martial arts from level 1 to a higher level, but why not just level up his Swordsmanship some more instead? Sure, Luffy could spend time trying to figure out how mantra works, but why not spend that time developing more gears using his devil fruit? Sure, Franky could spend time trying to find a devil fruit and learning how to use it, but why not spend that time making additional modifications to his cybernetic enhancements? It's not so simple as, "now we have a longer list of boxes to check." Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time leveling up one skill will necessarily be deficient in the others, because nobody in the series has infinite time, villain or protagonist. In fact, we see that principle IN ACTION in this very arc. Kaku and Kalifa's use of their devil fruits are very rudimentary and clumsy compared to Luffy's advanced techniques, since Luffy has spent the time to actually hone his devil fruit abilities. Meanwhile, they have use of 6 powers techniques that Luffy doesn't have access to, since they have actually devoted TIME to training those.

He is expressing concern that it’ll become another essential power the opponent have to check off to be relevant. With luffy overcoming someone that has mastery over both their fruits and the rokushiki at the end of the arc, there is definitely reason to be worried that it’ll become the “new norm”, sorta like how “skilled” people had a place in hunterxhunter until nen got introduced, after which anyone without nen is literally just fodder to be brutally decimated. -Spoiler warning- While he isn’t right with his concerns about rokushiki, we see the issue come up in the future of the series with haki. It’s become the norm to the point where it might as well have never been introduced, as anyone relevant nowadays “must” know how to use it to be relevant in a fight.

What he is worried about is what happened to Crocodile being an issue that happens constantly in One Piece Crocodile is supposed to be this powerful beast that is feared by everyone as a warlord of the sea, but by the point where we get to see him again we realize that Luffy could pretty much kill him with one attack if he is still as weak as he was when we first saw him That is what powercreeping means, really not that hard to understand. Although Crocodile is an exception because when he showed up the plans for One Piece weren't as grand as it ended up being but yeah, he is just afraid of the Dragon Ball power level thing being an issue here two

You also can put Kalifa defeat on the fact that she was overestimated her DF power and overused them, powers which she doesn't have time to understand and hone. As I said the powers of DF came from you're imagination, inspiration and the way you use them. The same can be applied to Kaku.

@@leakypeach6250 I think this is genius by Oda. In the last video we had concerns about power creep and „People with devil fruits now get outclassed by people with the Six Powers and devil fruits“. Oda pretty much went saying „My power system isn’t about power but about everything making sense“. Devil fruits for example are about creativity. Mr.5 or Bluenos fruits are one of the most OP Paramecias in One Piece if you use them right, but people don’t and that’s realistic Spoiler about a new character introduced later: Same thing with Magellan

1. The six powers are essentially just very high-level martial arts. 2. Most members of CP9 are experts in some of the powers while lacking in others.

I think it’s explained in this arc if I remember correctly that the 6 powers are only learned by marines and its really rare to see someone outside the marines using it.

In the anime on Sabaody whenever a Crewmate got sent away by Kuma there was a bubble that popped and there was this plop sound effect. Idk when I first watched this, the reactions of Luffy combined with the bubbles popping really felt like they died and he‘s completely powerless to do anything against it

@@LJMahomes oh damn. yeah moments like this make me realise that i really should listen to my boyfriend when he tells me to watch a few specific scenes that he suggests from the anime because i can just imagine how much more heartbreaking that was in the anime compared to the manga and i was already on the verge of crying in the manga 💀

On the lack of "shave", one thing about the 6 powers is how difficult is to master them. Nero for example has already able to use 4 forms and has considered a amazing candidate. But knowing how to use them dont mean full mastery, as its common with martial arts people are better with some abilities than with others, Lucci is a master of all of them, but Kalifa may be amazing with 2 or 3 while just able to do the rest. In a similar note Jabra demonstrate that his mastery of "iron body" to be on another level as he is the only one able to move while using it That also helps going foward as it became a equalizer for people without DF while being difficult but not impossible for people with DF to gain some of it.

35:07 I think you might need to add an S+ tier mate , because One Piece still has a lot of S tier arcs in the bag .

Robin is such a nuanced character. She didn't only leave the SH in order to protect them, but because she understood that her enemy was so humongous that, no matter how kind hearted her crew was, she thought they were going to abandon her at some point, and that's what scared her the most. To top it off, Luffy responded in the only way he could to a whole life of betrayal and trauma, by literally declaring war to Robin's enemy. No other answer would've been more suitable.

To be honest her knowing that they can press the button and cause a „Buster Call“ was probably enough for her to yield. I can’t imagine how traumatized a little girl has to get after losing every person she ever knew, literally a complete island got removed from the face of the earth (along with every record of it ever existing) just because they were able to read the ancient language. Now matter how much trust you have in your Nakama, you would probably do anything in order to not have to live through that twice

Zoro's Ashura, Sanji's Diable Jambe and Chopper monster point are things that you can put aside for now.

Early on there was a Q&A with oda and a fan asked him if any strawhats would die by the end of the story. He replied "Yes." And it was later revealed that he was referring to the going merry. Of course, given he may have been copping out at the time, that has also sparked tons of theories about which strawhat would die, if any.

I find it hilarious that fucking Dolton must have been the one to subdue Monster Point when Chopper first discovered it since he is the only somewhat strong fighter on Drum that we know of , outside of maybe Kureha

The way you're thinking about devil fruits is very smart. Definitely can't wait to see more of your future thoughts.

Something that's also great from this arc involving chopper, when we meet him, he was terrified to be just a monster, he wanted to fit in, but now, for his family, he's more then willing to become a monster

Glad I decided to catch up on all these Luffy's Lobby videos when I did, binging through all of them today. It's been a treat listening to you describe your journey through One Piece so far. I'm hopeful to seeing the Jaya video go back up soon too cause I do really want to hear what your initial thoughts were on Blackbeard considering how much you were hyped hearing the name in the arcs directly preceding it. Your thoughts on the power system stuff and the power creep potential issues were also really interesting. It's certainly a problem that's hard to avoid in a series that's run as long as One Piece and I think it (mostly) avoids it as much as a story that's been running weekly for almost a quarter of a century can.

Man, I still remember watching some of those episodes back in school. Your series just brought me back almost ten years by now, hahaha. The arch in Enies or rather Luffy's Lobby were when I got really invested in the story. However, my favorite arc is yet to come. So I do really hope that you will find a way to continue the series as you also seem to enjoy it quite a bit.

@@carsonspinks1067 , the power system even if they kept it the same like almost every other Shonen/Shonen Jump series would imply that Spandam was lying about the power system because Zoro had Conquers Haki in Enies Lobby prior to Luffy gaining full control of the ability in the Post-Timeskip Era thus meaning that Kaku is stronger than Lucci in combat because people that use Conquers Haki in combat like Luffy and Zoro have the strongest will power, so that’d mean it’d go Kaku, Lucci, etc etc instead of the order of power scaling that Spandam used in this arc.

Once you finish watching the Post-Enies Lobby Arc you need to rewatch a moment of your Alabasta review at timestamp 6:20. Don't rewatch it until you finish the next arc and are writing the review though, trust me. Luffy's Lobby

If it's something random like Kribulstein or whatever, then that's totally fine, but if it's something that I can reasonably theorize about then I'd probably rather not hear it at all to ensure that my bizarre-o theories can continue uninterrupted. 😄

I have never cried as hard as I did during Merry's funeral. When it showed up to save the crew I literally jumped out of my seat with excitement, I was so happy. My eyes are watering up just typing this. Literally the saddest scene in all of One Piece.

Enies Lobby is still my favorite arc by far it has so much of my favorite moments and solidified one piece as my favorite anime

One piece tear jerker scenes and episodes are so strong that even listening to a summary of it makes my eyes water

Jyabura not using soru(shave) to dodge kind of does make sense to his character since he touts the fact that he can use tekai(iron body) while moving. He seems to heavily rely on iron body.

This is the arc, as much as I love it, that I became aware of the danger of Run Piece. They spend soooo loooong ruuuunning. Just before they even get to the real battles. Impel Down was so much running as well. I joked to a friend at Marineford Luffy must be running super super slow. Then at the final ramp it zooms out and does show Luffy is indeed running so slow he is almost in place. I told my friend by Punk Hazard, once they all started running I was getting PTSD flashbacks. Sure Namek doesn't blow up in DBZ for a long time, but there are shows focused on running where there is less running involved. TV Anime pacing can be brutal sometimes.

It's been a while since I've commented, and I had to wait til I got home to write this all up. Long, long post incoming about Luffy's Lobby! 5:05 Regarding the power rankings, and by extension the Six Powers. I feel like this does more than just cement Lucci as the big bad. Mainly, it helps to contrast CP9 and the World Government in general against the Straw Hats and their allies. Every member of CP9 is graded on a single scale of strength. Every member of CP9 is required to learn the six powers to even be a member. Hell, they all dress similarly with their black suits, each one only given minor variation. This is despite the wild variation in their body shapes and actual abilities. Most of the Straw Hats, meanwhile, have similar-ish proportions (at least the guys from the East Blue), yet they all dress so radically different from one another, as well as leaning into their individual strengths. Any CP9 member can tackle any mission (in theory), while each Straw Hat knows what they can do and what they need to leave up to someone else. Furthermore, the strongest member of CP9 isn't in charge. Lucci is the clear strongest, yet Spandam, a guy that is canonically stated to be weaker than a random grunt with a gun, is in charge and has no real power of his own. His sword Funkfreed is the one with a devil fruit, not him. He can't use any of the six powers (that we know of). Heck, even the thing that makes him the biggest threat, the ability to call in a Buster Call, was given to him by Admiral Aokiji for use in making sure Robin complied. 10:08 In a recent watchthrough with friends through the series, they all pointed out that CP9 as a whole has a very bad habit of using Iron Body to try to tank a hit rather than using Shave or Paper Art to dodge out of the way. I wonder if they may have just been overconfident? 22:08 Where did you hear that Shave let you move as fast as lightning? I don't remember that being stated anywhere in the series, though I could be misremembering. In any case, while it does let you move faster than the (normal untrained) eye can see, it doesn't let you move quite that fast. Between the illusions, the chip damage she'd suffered, the shock at Chopper interrupting, and the aforementioned overconfidence, I think Califa just didn't process quite what was happening. That's just my interpretation, though. 23:05 Diable Jambe! Someone once asked Oda why Sanji's leg doesn't burn up when using this technique. Oda's response was "Because his heart burns even hotter!" 24:10 Kaku is easily in my top five most talented Devil Fruit users. He's had his powers for maybe a couple hours at most, and yet he's able to pull all sorts of shenanigans. From using his neck to give his kicks more force and split the tower in half, to his cube form to create Tempest Kick Rain, to his utterly bizarre manipulation of his own body with Pasta Machine (two words that absolutely broke a friend when he heard them). He is one of the newest Devil Fruit users yet the sheer creativity he comes with in how to use his new powers is only matched by Luffy and Chopper, both of which have had their abilities for far longer and Chopper even uses a drug to help him manipulate his fruit. 24:28 Nine Sword Style: Asura! One of the most mysterious techniques. Interestingly, it was pointed out to me by a youtube video a couple years ago that almost all of Zoro's techniques include an aura of some kind in the art, usually that of animals. They went on to explain that Zoro's abilities seem to match nicely with the paths of Buddhism, including the path of the Asura. I won't link it here, since it was released a couple years ago and involves examples from the future, but it was interesting to hear. 29:50 Shuu, the Rust-man! You'll notice that he's not the only person with Devil Fruit powers they fight there. I think him being a "throwaway character" is to help emphasize just how BIG the Navy is and how truly powerful some of them can be. Here's a guy with the power to defeat any swordsman with ease (presumably), and he's still only a mere captain. Not even a Vice Admiral. Though, to be fair, a lot of what was shown in the anime was stuff that was added to extend the fight scene. It all makes sense, but in the Manga the only panel we got was of him touching Yubashiri and rusting it away. We have no idea if he's just straight up immune to all swords, or if he needs to use his hands, or if he needs to concentrate or what. 33:48 Come watch One Piece! We'll make you cry over a boat! Such a great arc, though personally the front half dragging a bit and the fact that it relies so much on Water 7 for setup brings it down very slightly in my own ranking. Still, easily one of my top 5 arcs.

Once again, a brilliant commentary on the Enies Lobby arc. With this arc, I think we get our first proper “death” in the series, as well as the largest conflict yet. In my personal opinion, some of the power ups came out of nowhere (Zoro’s Ashura and Sanji’s Diable Jambe) and I think the fights would have been better if only the Water 7 CP9 members were there, forcing team-ups among the Straw-Hats to take them down. Most of my issues come with the stretched-out pacing of the anime, however, and I still really enjoy this arc. But this arc is nothing in comparison to the Luffy’s Lobby arc!

comment on the 6 powers/Rokushiki and their unique uses normally the techniques are very rigid in how to be used, but high skilled aplicants can mix them togueter Soru/Shave - dash at high speed, but its unidirectional, so no real maneuvering unless its a highly adept user of it, think of it as dashing in games like Megaman X or Hollow Knight, you commit to the direction and have to stop for a second before changing directions, ab;e to be conbined with Geppo and Kami-e but more on that later Tekkai/Iron Body - Tense the body muscles to up the body defense, its main defect is that the user cannot move, nomrally that is, Jabra of CP9 made this his signature Technique when fighting, and he can fight while keeping Tekkai up, but because of that he cant really use Soru as freely, and thus have to release it for a second to use Soru and then enter his Tekkai fighting style Geppo/ Moonwalk - user is able (somehow) to kick the air to "fly", allows for high air maneuverability, but its speed is not that high, combination with Soru is possible but only Lucci was able to do it Kami-e/ Paper Art - the user relaxes his body to dodge attack more easily and efficinetly, this is more supposed to be for countering propouses but is one of the more rarely seen abilities since most Rokushiki users prefer to use Tekkai, by combining it with Soru one can have high speed with maneuverability, but only Lucci was able to do it Rankyaku/ Tempest Kick - one of the 2 base offensive moves of og Rokushiki, kicking with high power and high speed one creates a slash of compressed air, a Kamaitachi/ Wind Sickle, Kaku was an addept user of this ability and based his whole combat style in it, a long range technique whose basics can be applied to Shigan Shigan/Finger Pistol - the second of the 2 basic offensive abilities, but tensing the muscles of the hand and attaking at high speed the user can pierce with an extended finger, this ability is partially a limited application of Tekkai with traiing to strengthen the arms body strength enough to push through most defenses, by combining it with Rankyaku one can send mini wind blades from the finger/hand, using more than one finger at a time in this technique is harder than one would think but is the real basis of Jabbras Tekkai Kempo as you see, the most adept users of the techniques and variations to them are trully those that are leapps and bounds stronger than the rest, hecne why the Rokushiki is a more rigid combat style than what it would seem

32:43 I was pretty surprised of its original meaning tbh 😅 I mean I knew the word because I sometimes heard it (I'm german btw) but I never heard it with the meaning of something like a ship repair ghost or smth like that. I don't even know if its origin is german but it sounds like a german word I'd say. Especially with the suffix -mann in the end, meaning "man" in german. But idk what Klabauter means. On its own it has no meaning I know about. But I love it when Oda randomly uses german terms. I'm also a big Fan of Ruffy's "Rhino Schneider" (Schneider meaning smth like "cutter") or Big Moms "Heavenly Feuer" attack ("Feuer" is just "Fire") 😂 And I don't know if you still remember Captain Morgan. On his hat it says "Möwe" which is german for "Gull". But I have no idea why Oda used a german word for this 😂 the way he uses languages is amazing. But what irks me till this day is that Robin's attacks are always a mix of spanish and french words and I just ask myself why don't you just use one language for one attack? Hahaha. She always says flowers in french ("fleurs") but when she's counting she always uses spanish numbers such as "cien" or "seis". But when she uses her big hands she says the spanish word again ("mano"). It just makes no sense but I still love it 😂 but I mean.....one of Zoro's most famous attacks is called after a rice ball so.....😅 and one of my favourite attacks from Sanji ("Diable Jambe") just translated to something like "damn leg" or "hellish leg" xD

It was kind of irritating to me when Korotos asked why they aren't used their superspeed or any of their abilities to dodge. The main reason for that is at that point they took quiet bit of damage and werent on full strenght so it is entirely possible that they were simply took too much damage to be able to use them

Being able to move at the speed of lightening isn’t the same as being able to react to something the speed of lightening

To me, Zoro will never have a devil's fruit power, as his dream to be the greatest swordsman. Having a devil's fruit ability, would make him no longer the greatest swordsman, as he would rely on his devil's fruit power in a fight. However, having other trainable power ups that would make his swordmanship better, are far more ideal for someone like Zoro.

Hearing him talk about how he's still wondering about the d initial 300 episodes in is funny because I'm 1000 in still wondering

Aokiji saying that is scary but did you maybe forget how they pointed out that burning the flag meant declaring war on the whole world? Maybe you missed it but it's the fact that when Luffy realizes who the enemy of Robin is (the whole damn world) and doesn't hesitate for a second to give Usopp the orders, who also doesn't hesitate a second to shoot down the flag - is what made that scene extremely EXTREME for me. I loved it so much and it's my favorite scene in all of media (I'm a manga reader btw). Not to mention that the follow up - where Robin, thinking back to her past and how she was always thought of as someone who shouldn't have ever lived, being in such a shock that she's being allowed to wish for something like this... Is just.... AHHHH. Not to mention that despite her mother's last wish was simply for Robin to live... The world was just so cruel to her that she ended up thinking the complete opposite! Her mother's last wish is reignited in that scene as well and I CANNOT tell you how it felt when instead of manly tears I was straight up ugly crying during this scene. Umm... I got off topic but I just wanted to point out that Luffy is the one who declared the war on the government and when Aokiji said "we lost" it's in relation to that.

Little did you know that under Ennie's lobby fishmen lives there with other fishmen. You probably are aware that seakings also live down there Luffy will have a very hype fight over the world with Blackboard. But for now it's an untold story.... Ybbol S'yfful

im glad they didnt shave spam the entire arc, it has to take a lot out of the user seen as tho it permits a regular human to move at incredible speeds so im glad they couldnt use it constantly

It's not ever explained I think, but my personal head cannon on how nico got the fruit is in an sbs Oda revealed what the fruit looks like and unsurprisingly it looks like a flower. I think one day nico Robin was starving and one day ate the fruit thinking it was a flower.

I think its like what would happen in the real world if you had a gun but was given powers you throw the gun away even though you barely know how to use them

Luffy’s Lobby was a big turning point for me. I liked the series before but this was the first time it massively impressed me

just to tell you, it isn't called the blank century, but the void century instead. Also slight spoilers for a tiny little theory you had: You are correct that chopper's monster point is different, as instead of a new ability like how we normally have them, chopper has been able to get his devil fruit to a point that he is considered to have mastered it.

Yooo .remebis this very well korotos. On this moment when zoro used ashura. Everythings is in here when zoro activates ashura he repels the gust generating by kaku its the conqueror. Then when he hit its armenent thru conqueror stronger than ryou and armament haki. Damn zoro isn1st one inthe crew to display all that is in wano

don't think too much to the power layer thing, like I get that anyone can have all of that and makes it iffy but the thing is there is more to come and I feel you might get overwhelmed worrying too much about the power layer thing. I mean you'll learn soon enough.

about the Sogeking song being superior in the dub: Never watched the english dub and never will, but I grew up with the german dub and if the english version is relatively the same for you I can assure you that song will haunt you for decades to come. Damn I'm 26 years old and have watched/read One Piece for 18 years now...it's literally a substantial part of my life

Hunter X Hunter was the original plan for this series! Though if I were to do this, then I'd most likely start with the manga right away - based on my past experience, I'm not particularly eager to approach something owned by Toei again. 😬
