Excellent artifact, Evan. The Goodwill Store connection and the commentary from Mark Twain increase its allure by orders of magnitude. 👍

A friend of mine refurbished an original Allen pepper box that was in pretty good shape. We took it to the local gravel pit to try it out. It was .36 caliber. I dont remember the load but it was pretty light. We were both able to keep six shots, when all six caps stayed on, inside a 12×19 in target at five yards but at ten yards it was iffy and a hit at twenty yards was just lucky. Still, it was fun to shoot and made a heak of a lot of noise and smoke.

I was a little bit disappointed that you didn't show us how it rotated, how it was loaded and unloaded. A little closer up on the gun itself.

When a firearm is in pristine condition and 175 years old, I am reluctant to manipulate it. I should have brought out another one in lower condition. The pepperbox loads from the muzzle. Powder is dropped into each of the barrels and a round lead ball rammed against the powder charge. Then a percussion cap is placed on each of the six nipples and it's ready to shoot. Pulling the trigger raises the hammer, rotates a barrel with cap under the hammer, and then drops the hammer to fire. Two ways to "unload." Fire the charges. Or use what's called a worm on a ramrod to screw into the lead ball and pull it from the barrel. The worm looks like a corkscrew.

Thank you Evan for taking time out of your busy day to clarify that. I also am a collector of historic firearms. I also have a super collection of D.F. Barry photographs. I, like yourself, received my first firearm at 8 years old and still have it 65 years later. Thanks for doing what you do. Jerry

I believe the pepperboxes were made for up close and personal shooting. Shooting at anything more than 3 feet away was, most likely entered into the category of long distance shooting.

Absolutely. A "get off me" gun very effect at bad breath or card table distance.

Evan, have you ever fired any of the unusual firearms the museum has? I wish I had your job!

I would like to but it's against museum policy. Liability issues if someone is injured. Also the potential to damage the firearm. As noted above, some of our guns are over 200 years old. We do have modern firearms that would be safe to shoot. Frankly, despite my curiosity I support the policy.

Oh, how interesting it would be to see you visit some of the historic locations related to or suggested by pieces in the museum collection, kind of a Charles Kauralt approach, starring Evan Green!

I have visited many of the sites associated with our firearms. We don't have enough budget to support per diem for the videographer and me. I would like to do something like what you suggest. Maybe one of these days. We are currently filming a series of videos featuring firearms from the collection at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. OWM is across town and we worked on site. That's about the limit of my travel.

I'd be tempted to place a notice in the paper or online just asking if someone in the Cheyenne area had any background on the weapon. I'm fascinated by the Wyoming connections to the artifacts you share with us. Thanks for all you do.

I wonder if they were aware they gave it to Goodwill? We regularly are offered donations but this ended up at the thrift store. Not sure we want to go public with a request. Would of course be great to know something of its history. How did it get from London to Cheyene?

I keep track of these suggests and will do better next time.
