It’s cool to hear, especially since it’s actually an English Creole despite Dutch being their official language. You can also see the West African influence for eating (like “nyam” which is specifically from the Wolof & Fula languages & also has the same meaning “to eat”).

As a dutch speaker, I think Dutch and English had an equal influence on vocabulary. I count 12 and 11 words originating from each language, respectively.

@@Octochikenit's definitely an English based creole. Dutchified words were added much later

But the majority of Suriname people are native Dutch speakers.. Like really.. Native.. It's about 50-60% of the population! And only 20-30% are native Sranan Tongo speakers.. But many Dutch speakers are able to speak it.. Most Surinamese(according to my friend who live there) are bilingual or even trilingual or even crazier quadrilingual.. So that's why the number of Sranan Tongo speakers might seem large if you combine the first and second speakers but actually it's not as large as the Dutch one.. So they speak Dutch even the majority of them don't have any traceable Dutch ancestry..

When we become adults and old people, most people don't care about what we really like if we stop to think about it.😉😉😉😉😉🍹👍

The name Santa comes from the Latin word sanctus, which means "holy" or "sacred". It is also the feminine form of the name Santo. In Sranan we say e.g. Holy Name as Santa Nem.

Surinamese is an English based creole. There are no Dutch creoles anymore, there used to be in Guyana.

@@matkaboskaosra-bramska3993 er is heel wat sociolinguïstiek onderzoek gedaan naar het Surinaams en ook daarin wordt aangegeven dat het een English based Creole language is. Suriname was allereerst een Engelse kolonie.
