All of LuLu's puppies have become bold and confident! In addition, they all learn very quickly and have a nose and prey drive second to none. Finally, they are very loving and affectionate when not working in the role of hunting/field trialing and service dog.

LuLu's Five Puppies are now a year old. They have performed outstanding in so many different ways. Their intelligence level is very high as indicated by how quickly they learn task and remember over periods of time. They have superior prey drive, over the top nose for finding birds. Three have gone to different families who have made them a part of their family in addition to their training as either hunting dogs or therapy dogs. I have two of them that are steady to wing, shot, fall of the bird and retrieves to hand on command. I could not be more proud of them! Dale

Love it! Did you find any special challenges presented by the breed in her training? I'll be a getting a gordon in a couple of years and people keep telling me how they are quite 'dumb' but none of these people clicker train... I would assume you could develop in the dog the same drive to think and learn as any other breed.

+elyn sula, Your response does not reflect what is occurring in my video. I am a Positive Gun Dog Trainer. If you have any understanding about imprinting stages and early learning, you would know this increases a puppies intelligence and connection with the trainer. by Dale Hubbard, Ph,D. elyn sula

Sebastian F : A good question. Clicker Training decreases the learning time by approximately 50%. I have trained Gordon Setters. They are beautiful dogs. The earlier your start training with a positive method, you will be ahead of others who use different approaches. I did not find any challenges with breeds such as in this video. (The main challenge is the trainer themselves.) This video was only after several five minute sessions. As long as you are training within the breeds genetic drives, there should not be any difference in training. I have not noticed differences in the wide variety of dog breeds when Clicker Training. All of the puppies have demonstrated outstanding abilities and performance. These areas include superior upland bird hunting, family companions and intelligence. This information comes from their owners. It was accomplished through positive reinforcement methods.

I received this recommendation letter today from one of my clients that I am providing long distance consultation/training for his German Short Hair Pointer: February 25th, 2018 To all current/future birddog owners, So, you know you want a birddog, but you don’t know where to start? Great! We are on the same page, and you are in the right place. Before you can fully understand the position in which I am writing this letter, you must know a bit of our birddog history. Six months prior to writing this letter I was embarking on my first pheasant hunt over a well-trained group of pups in South Dakota. Hunting over a pointer that was steady to shot and retrieved to hand was unlike anything I had ever experienced. From that moment forward, probably much like yourself, I was in love and HAD to find myself the perfect hunting buddy. After extensive research and a few waiting lists, we found ourselves bringing home a great South Dakota German Shorthaired Pointer with great looks and a clumsy, yet business-like demeanor. Like most of you are experiencing, there is a moment after committing to taking home a new pup where the “this just got real” feeling sinks in. All of a sudden you need to figure out a few minor (heavy sarcasm) details. The choice to bring home a pure bred hunting dog comes with great responsibility to train said puppy, and right now you are contemplating a few. A) Pay a few thousand bucks and ship your pup off to a kennel to get started or finished. B) Just wing it. Don’t research much, and think that every dog just has the pure “instinct” to be a great birddog (probably not you if you’re reading this). C) KZread: there are lots of instructions on KZread to help you with every behavior your pup will need (unfortunately, not in the correct chronological order). D) Seek long-distance consulting to get the satisfaction/pride of self-training your pup with the personal guidance of a professional trainer at a much more modest price than “A,” plus experiencing the puppy phase. My initial instinct was to chooseplan A, not deal with the process, and receive a well-trained dog. However, this was going to cost a considerable amount of money, missed quality time with our new pup/family member, and loss of control and intimacy in our pup’s training. Plan “B” was never an option due to our personalities. Two months prior to picking up Oakley I had settled on “C.” After extensive research on KZread I knew that I wanted to train our pup through positive reinforcement. There are several people and organizations represented on KZread practicing positive reinforcement, but I needed more than a scattered videos; I needed organization and direction. Queue Dr. Dale Hubbard. From the moment I saw Doc in his videos, his passion-fueled, positive reinforcement approach to birddog training was clearly evident, and never failed to remain consistent. After realizing this I decided to reach out to him. I was hoping for a few answers and advice, and to my surprise he offered so much more. He offered his help and support through the entire training process. To date,Doc has been available for one on one conversations at anytime, has returned emails promptly, and has given direct and positive feedback to training videos. I stumbled across a great opportunity when I called Doc desperately seeking guidance, and he, without thinking twice, offered his assistance. I couldn’t recommend a better coach and mentor to get your new puppy ready to hunt perfectly. Happy hunting, Jake, Meredith Ellis and Oakley jacobiellis.dct@icloud.com

Today, I completed the puppies Steady On Point, Flush, Shot and Retrieve Quail on Command. It took only two trips on approximately three Quail each for them to remain steady to Shot of Quail. They are simply amazing and will have a video soon of their experience in the field on Quail.

Have a 8 week old English setter puppy and I’m using this method but the puppy keeps sitting is this a bad thing. If so how do you fix it?

What's the best way to get the puppies to this point where they sit on the stand waiting for the treat? Do you get hands on and pick them up and place them back on when they run off? Or do you wait for them to come back on their own?

Shaping - this technique is the most effective - start with a proximation of the behavior and Shape each behavior with a higher expectation until the desired goal is reached. www.lucycloud.com

Dear Dr Hubbard, I have a behavioral background (mostly with people... it was some time back) and worked for several years with a Behavior Analyst. I also enjoy bird dogs. However, I have tended to stick with fairly standard training methods as I have not observed behavioral principles applied in such a wonderfully logical manner until discovering your videos. Could you suggest the order in which to watch your videos? I think I could pick up a lot of good information that way and would truly appreciate it. Kind Regards, Olen Rush

Thank you for your response. Behavioral principles apply across the board among all living animals. Start with Placement board. Then Barrel work. Have targeted goals, use Shaping principles and BE CONSISTENT. Make Retrieving among all training objects fun. Remember your Schedules of Reinforcement. Think outside the box, adjust your Training interactions as you proceed. Thank you - call if you like. 205 300 7625. Dale Hubbard

Shane Gurney, there are a number of training approaches. Research shows us from the time B.F. Skinner studied how living things learn, there have been numerous studies to support the method I am using which speeds up the process. Furthermore, food base reward systems are beneficial on several levels of training. I suggest you just read the literature if you desire to know more. Anyone reading the comment posted by Shane Gurney can see there are varied approaches to training. The important issue to me is that I hope all reading Shane's comment can observe that Shane has a limited understanding of the past and on-going research as to establishing behaviors that are resistant to extinction. When studying Learning Theory Principles, one is exposed to all aspects of understanding how all living things learn. Shane gives the appearance of limited integrity to understand how to train with precision. Therefore, I am most appreciative that Shane made his limited based knowledge statement for readers to make their own decision! Dr. Dale Hubbard, Ph.D., Animal Behavioral Specialist.

What is the purpose of the board/ stand?

  • @DrDaleHubbardPhD

    @DrDaleHubbardPhD

    6 жыл бұрын

The "Placement Board" is used because dogs are place oriented. When combined with Clicker Methodology, it becomes a very powerful tool for training. Training time is usually reduced by 50% and their is a cognitive process that develops within the dog which creates a high motivational level to learn. Therefore, they learn how to follow commands, enjoy the process of learning and once the behavior is established, it is very resistant to change.

Don't you think 5 weeks old is a bit early, let them be puppies and with their mother until 8 weeks?

There is no pressure with positive reinforcement training - They are still allowed to be puppies - just as humans are allowed to be babies but you are still teaching. The earlier they start to learn, they benefit and learn quicker and helps develop intelligence. It also builds rapport with the trainer. The army has shown that early neurological stimulation with pups develops more intelligent dogs.

Clicker training offers choice and grants the animal a voice. If the puppy didn't want to engage with the trainer, it could leave :) Thats the beauty of clicker training, that tiny little puppy is there, interacting with the trainer became is -wants- to.
