English Professor Reacts to the G-8 Arc of One Piece (episodes 196-200): Part 1

Please be kind and refrain from including spoilers, especially for arcs past Skypiea, in the comments. Thank you! See the “One Piece” playlist on my channel for my thoughts on the East Blue Saga, Alabasta/Arabasta Saga, and Skypiea Saga. I have discussed other manga series with Merphy Napier as well. And, of course, there are loads of videos on fantasy literature!

In case this wasn't explained already: G-8 was not written by One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda. It's known as a "filler" story. Filler stories are common among serialized anime for when the animated adaptation catches up with the story content of the original, but they need to keep airing new episodes to keep their TV timeslot. Filler creates a buffer of content so the animation studio has a smooth roadmap of episodes until there is enough manga to continue the main storyline. In general, filler is considered non-canon by many fans, but G-8 is notable that the vast majority of One Piece fans agree it is high enough quality to recommend others watch it, even if Oda will never acknowledge it in his story. As someone who got burnt out on watching the anime specifically because of all the filler stories, I'd say that's some high praise for G-8.

I will be honest. Filler has been relatively minimal of an issue as I watch the anime. Sure, I don't really care for some arcs as much as others. In fact, I was not even aware the G8 was considered filler when I saw it. But filler arcs are not long at all. Silver Mine, the Caesar Retrieval Arc, Little East Blue, etc have been a bit of a pain, but they don't really last long enough to bother me, personally. G8, and probably controversially, Warship Island arcs are highlights.

One of the subtle, interesting things about the G-8 arc is the question of who the actual antagonists and protagonists are. The Straw Hats cannot change throughout this arc, because it's a filler arc and must (therefore) end with them in the exact same situation they were in when it began. But the story is not static. The base itself has a narrative arc.

One thing the G-8 arc does extremely well is recapitulate and synthesize all of the main characters' strengths as we've seen them up to this point. Robin's disguise, Usopp's deception, etc. We get what is essentially a third party's take on what makes the crew work together so well, condensed into a handful of episodes. Not to mention a number of fantastic visual gags that might have been tricky to do in manga form. Arigato gozaimasu, Chase-sensei

I'm glad you enjoyed watching some of the anime! I know you were a little disappointed at not having the subtitles version on-hand, but thankfully One Piece has one of the better English dubs in anime. The cast and crew really respect Oda's world and do their best to properly adapt the story for English speakers with minimal changes to the dialogue and story. What adjustments they do make are more like rewording the translations to fit the lip movements and to help the dialogue sound more natural when spoken aloud, mainly so it doesn't sound like the actors are just reading a translation. They even involved Oda himself in the casting process for the English Straw Hats, giving him final say out of the auditions if I recall right. We didn't always have it this good, though. The English dub that's widely available today wasn't the first attempt to bring the anime to the US. Please bear with me, because I'm about to get really nerdy with this explanation, haha. Before the current dub, we had was the infamous 4Kids dub. This dub was produced during a time when anime was often heavily reworked in a misguided effort to make the shows more "marketable" in the US, often by cutting content, rewriting dialogue and characters, changing character names, adding unnecessary jokes, replacing the soundtracks wholesale, and generally reshaping the shows to fit a specific mold instead of letting the shows be the shows. 4Kids was certainly the most infamous company for making these types of changes to anime, but they were far from the only one. Dragon Ball, Macross, and Sailor Moon (handled by Funimation, Harmony Gold, and DiC respectively) are a handful of franchises who have suffered the consequences of this overlocalized approach, robbing the shows of their identity for years in the States until more faithful productions and subtitled versions were put out. Ironically, Funimation ended up handling the current dub of One Piece, though they were a company that learned the value in respecting the original shows, putting out a large number of highly regarded anime dubs since their less-than-stellar start with DB. They eventually got a second chance on DB with with an anniversary version of Dragon Ball Z Kai, an anniversary version of Dragon Ball Z, and they handled it and every DB production since with a lot more care and respect. Back to One Piece, you can still see some of the consequences of these practices affect the English manga to this day; the names "Zolo" and "Merry Go" for "Zoro" and "Going Merry" come from the 4Kids dub. Thankfully the underlying translation is still fairly faithful, so you don't have to worry about the original dub's rewrites seeping into the manga translations. It's just that by the time Funimation's more faithful dub came around, Viz had already published too much of the series with the changed terms to revert them; with a series as long as OP, you can imagine the nightmare it would be to reprint all those volumes with the original terms! So if you were wondering, that's where some of the odd inconsistencies between the English manga and every other source for OP come from!

The anime does a few things which really enhance the One Piece experience. I've read the manga and watched the anime and I can definitely say both are worth it. 2 things i really like about the anime are: 1. The music. its so good and adds so much emotion to literally every scene. 2. The voice acting (I've only watched Japanese subbed so i can't speak on dub). The anime is worth watching just for the unique One Piece laughs and character mannerisms alone. I really love the unique laughs that the characters have. they range from funny to cool (Blackbeard and Crocodile) to straight up annoying and they all do such a good job representing the characters personalities. The voice actors do such a good job and now when I read the manga I have the sounds of the characters burned into my brain. There's definitely a point to all the unique laughs so keep an eye out (much) further in the story :) Love these videos! I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on Water 7 PS. Low key, I think this is one of the very few truly great arcs in any anime. It's one of the few "filler" arcs that these shows do that doesn't overstep, and as a result it has no trouble fitting perfectly in and feeling at home, without stepping on Eichiro Oda's toes with the original story, while still giving us more of our Straw Hat crew and highlighting each of their characters appropriately and wonderfully. Actually elevating the story. We get filler for a variety of reasons, but usually filler happens because the animation caught up to the written publication and needed to buy time, but money talks and keeps flowing if they keep making episodes, so they made original stories. This is similar to one of the major challenges with adapting any piece of media to other formats, they're inherently different and some things need to be "massaged" to fit the medium. This threatens the consistency of the characters, story, and setting, and when done poorly leads to it feeling like a roller coaster or hatchet job at the end. Something will happen that's insurmountable to our existing characters without growth, and afterwards, since it wasn't part of the written story that growth is simply lost, like it never happened and nobody talks about it. Sometimes this is in the form of a new power up, or character development, or tragedy striking side characters, but whatever happens is almost invariably lost forever, even in the continuing animation. G-8 dodges this, expertly, by presenting us with an entirely believable and consistent scenario with the adventures thus far that has separated our crew and we can't punch our way out of, immediately at least. For some crew, this place is trouble, while to others it could be perilous. It's a test of our wits, and the Commander is a worthy and appropriate adversary. Not exactly a world renowned figure, but a local leader who is formidable to us in his own way on his own turf. How will our crew overcome this and continue their journey? It keeps the tension high, while the stakes are elevated, but relatively low, considering our journey. We're never really questioning whether they'll make it out or not, or the consequences of our escape, but we're invested in how. One Piece lends itself quite well to filler arcs, in my opinion, because at surface level it's almost a monster-of-the-week series with all the different islands and environments they get to face. With this, as long as you "color inside the lines," you're able to pick a point between islands in their journey and invent whatever setting and scenario your heart desires. On top of that, Eichiro Oda's adventures range from unfathomable in scope (we just left Sky Island after beating "God") to almost mundane (everyone has to remember Chou Chou the dog in Orange Town and his pet supply store), meaning almost no matter what you choose to put the Straw Hats through, it CAN feel consistent with the story to that point. The door is wide open, and Oda's even put signs up for you with all the work up until now. Plus, you have the next chapters that he's releasing as they come, so you know where you have to end up, and the scope of events that you can play with given his context. Color inside the lines, while conveying the appropriate feeling, was a bit off for an analogy. You get to draw your own outline, but then use Oda's paint-by-number guide to color it. Yet, many filler arcs still stumble as they add extra color of their own, muddying the mixture. G-8 is a rare treat! I very much look forward to part 2!

When I first watched, I didn't know what filler was, so an example of one that muddied the mixture for me was the Warship Island Arc in East Blue. After Loguetown, all dialogue was pretty explicit that the next stop was the Grand Line, so having an extra arc on the way was off putting alone, but then it ruined the moment in Alabasta where Zoro learned to cut through steel. First of all, there were plenty of times between the arcs I was wondering why he didn't just do that to solve some problem they were having, and secondly I was sitting there confused like "didn't he already do this like 100 episodes ago?"

i am here to defend the english dub. trust me when i say that the translators do a TON of work to not only translate what is being said, but to find the correct analogies/motifs in english so as to portray some of the subtleties/Oda’s hidden messages that a non-japanese person simply can’t know. i’ve watched both, and the japanese voice actors are super endearing, but if english is your first language you’ll get more story out of the dub

Fun fact for how the anime influenced the manga, in both the subbed and dubbed versions of the series Oda did not imagine that the studio(s) &/or voice actress would give Chopper such a cute sounding voice. Eventually in the manga he slowly and surely responds to this by quietly drawing Chopper to be cuter and cuter. And I mean, I imagine that the English dubbing studio was primarily following the Japanese dubbing's lead, so it was most likely primarily the original anime's producers & voice people who decided with that direction with Chopper.

I mean, when you think about how long the series has been going on for, it makes sense that Oda's crafting of the series, from writing to artwork to everything in-between, would evolve and change over the years. When you see it you can literally spot the difference between old and new One Piece material, which there is *another* reason for that, but then THAT would be spoilers so we'll leave it at that.

It's hard not to have heard her voice, since her Pikachu is consistent across languages, and she would've been cast right around the time Pokemon blew up. The cute factor of both Chopper and Pikachu has led to some people jokingly recoloring the Detective Pikachu model from the movie and speculating that Live Action Chopper will look similar.

G-8, to me, is one of the few times that an anime filler (an episode that is not manga canon) arc actually managed to hit almost all the themes and character beats of the source material, while at the same time being a completely original work that only adds constructively to the overall narrative. The comedy is also A+ when compared to the rest of one piece. Glad you are enjoying even the non-canon bits.

Usually, the manga is the better medium than anime, but there are arcs (like Arlong Park) that I prefer in the anime or arcs/storylines that are not in the manga (like G-8 and certain movies). In addition, there are moments and scenes that are done so well in the anime, which I highly recommed!

I think it says a lot about G8 that every review series i've seen has had fans telling them to watch the anime even for a few episodes to watch it. IMO it's the peak of what "anime filler" should be- not canon, but also giving us space to experience the characters as they are for a moment, a breather between arcs and character growth where we get to see just how far our characters have come so far.

They do that because they arent only good people, but competent ones too with strong values. Like Sanji here has been helpful, humble, great cook but also valued food and nutrition. 27:00 IF you watch more of the anime, DON'T WATCH THE NEXT ARC. This arc is what's referred to as a "Filler", that means anime-only content. Filler can come, like here, as a whole independent story arc, or as additions to an existing manga arc adaptation. As amazing as this one is (at least imo), I can't believe the same team of people also worked on the next one. They doubled the length of the arc (by adding a whole filler segment) in the worst way possible. In the manga you will thoroughly enjoy it. In the anime you might even hate it. That's how off the mark it is. If you are interested in experiencing a bit more of the anime, I recommend watching episodes that adapt things you've already read and enjoyed, specially the highly emotional moments (like Nami asking Luffy for help or Dr Hiruluk's speech). The Japanese voice cast and the music makes those gut punching moments hit even harder. Same goes for the hype moments. Basically, the highs of the series go even higher. Overall, I do believe the manga is a best experience as a whole. But I do read the manga weekly, and I do watch the anime in batches (it used to be the other way around at some point), and I deeply enjoy both. I've re-read the series, and I've rewatched the series (with the sole exception of the filler content related to the next arc, that overstayed its welcome immediately, and a handful of recap episodes crammed at the tail of an emotional moment three islands from now). And I'll surely do it again, because I remember something, I want to fact-check it after a decade, and I end up unable to drop it until I catch up again afterwards, but I digress. My point is that both experiences have something that makes them worth it. But if you are sticking solely to the manga (and that's something I have recommended to lots of people), I do recommend checking the anime for those moments you liked the most, at least. Again, original Japanese audio, I don't like the dub, and while it's on point for some, it also misses a lot.

Ironically, hulu was one of the first places the Japanese subtitled anime became legally available to American audiences. From 2009-2016, hulu was the place to binge One Piece, having everything from Episode 1 to the latest broadcasted episode. You could catch up and stay caught up, no need for piracy. Somewhere around the episode 740s, they stopped keeping up with the current releases of episodes. Then one day their entire catalogue of subtitled episodes was gone, and slowly got replaced with dubbed episodes, currently having the first 746 episodes. I would assume this all has to do with streaming licenses expiring and being replaced with new ones.

I think there’s another layer to the analysis of “you can’t just throw a label like ‘marines = bad’, there are good marines and bad marines”. There are good and bad cogs in each organization, Marines included. However, it’s very clear that there’s an overarching ideology and direction to each org, which “good Marines” often clash with. One pointed example which has already taken place by the G8 arc is Smoker’s call at the end of Arabasta. The higher-ups made a certain decision regarding saving face and maintaining hegemonic control over their image, even in the face of government-backed oppression. Smoker chafes but, short of leaving the Marines outright, there’s nothing he can do. It’s true you can’t put labels on every member of the Marines, but it’s not the case that you can’t say “Marines = bad”. Or perhaps “World Govt = bad”.

My biggest problem with anime adaptations: instead of interpreting a story, you're interpreting someone else's (the directors) interpretation of the story, which is in turn interpreted by other people (animators), and everyone knows what the game of telephone ends up causing...

Don't worry about prefering the manga over the anime, many book-people usually do, and then they only watch a few notable episodes here and there. I, myself, only watched the anime after I got caught up reading the manga which is at chapter 720. I still do prefer the manga and just watch the anime in fast forward just to experience the voice acting, the colors and the action scenes. The animation only exceeded the manga in the Wano arc, which is ep 892 and onwards, in my opinion... I still read the manga first before the anime even now.

This was such a pleasant surprise. If I could recommend One Piece to my past self, I would definitely say to read the Manga up to G-8, watch G-8, then continue reading. Whoever suggested this really did you a favor because G-8 is such a great summary of characters till this point. It's harder to go back and watch it if you had steamed ahead. If G-8 is the only anime you watch from One Piece then that's perfectly fine. The anime does not have too many full filler episodes, but there is a lot of filler/slower pacing within episodes because they need a buffer between the manga/anime. The manga does not suffer from this pacing issue. G-8 is such a solid standalone arc.

Same here, I will never give up reading a book but a lot of times I can't finish a TV show or movie, or I need to watch it in 2-3 watch sessions(speaking about movies here).

omg first the mangas, now this! i cant wait to hear your thoughts on some later arcs and storyline developments! imo the anime is not perfect but got the benefit of adding music to what is seen which does enhances the experience in some regard.

I LOVE that you are reacting to the dubbed version! I LOVE that i can LISTEN to your video vs having to sit down and watch and try to read tiny subtitles. So many reactors on KZread ONLY react to sub, which is fine if they want that experience, it just makes it difficult as a viewer sometimes. I try to watch them and can never keep up because I just dont have the time to sit and watch in that manner. So I appreciate this one and that you are watching G8!

This is a good point I hadn't thought about. But Id rather get his input on the sub because its more true to the narrative in dialogue!

Thanks for doing these, i've really been enjoying them. As for other arcs to watch the anime for... I think reading and watching impel down to marineford would be super worth it. It's really good manga content and really good anime content. I'm sure after you read it, you wouldn't mind also watching it, you'll understand once you get to it. Much later is a anime only section called z's ambition that i enjoyed in that it ties together some more of the giants of elbaf. And i liked the giants in the story as a throughline. I guess it also leads to a movie that's not in the manga. i haven't seen it. but i suppose if i ever wanted to watch that film, that would be cool.
