2 players from 2019 very underrated, Chris Woakes just underrated in general tbh. And Liam Plunkett, brilliant in those middle overs when we needed wickets.

If Broad and Anderson are the ultimate bowling pair then Atherton and Nasser are ultimate pair as commentators.I can listen these 2 guys all day and the only slight negative thing about Nasser is that he gets a bit biased for certain players(not just from England but from any country) whereas Atherton is always measured and neutral in his reactions, opinions or about any player but still it is an absolute treat to listen to them.Waiting for their commentary in the World Cup.

Ultimate bowling pair who won only 1 test series in Australia and were beaten by Bangladesh at 2015 WC? Two of the most overrated bowlers of all time. 🤣
@NishantSharma-vf2wd

@@gts8919First of all, it is their longevity that commands respect and secondly Broad retired at a stage where he was bowling beautifully in his last series and Anderson barring last Ashes series has been in prime form in last 5 years and had a very good tour of India in 2021 where he not only was economical but also picked up crucial wickets with reverse swing on either turning or flat wickets so they at least deserve respect, if not considered as the best bowling pair or not the greatest.

@@gts8919 Yep-you have to look at the average as well as the wicket column & 27-28 is not cutting it compared to true greats like Ambrose, Marshall, Hadlee, WIllis, Lilee, McGrath, Barnes etc & before anybody says Botham-he batted mostly at number 6 & made 5,200 runs as well as being the strike bowler-he wasn't a tailender.

He probably wouldn't have got in (don't see him nudging out Gooch or Bairstow), but I think Nick Knight deserves an honourable mention. He was ahead of his time as a one-day batter for England in the late 90s. He actually tried to take advantage of the fielding restrictions, in the same vein as Sanath Jayasuriya.
So pleasing for ears when these 2 gentlemen speak! They are in commentary panel for WC 23!

I can't believe they completely forgot Bob Willis. 18 wickets at average of 17.5 and an economy rate of 2.67! Admittedly those were different times, but he was one heck of a bowler...and on his day, was as quick as Wood.
@oleggorky906
8 ай бұрын
There was a time in the 80s when Bob Willis was our only genuine fast bowler. Botham was a good medium fast bowler, but in the second half of his career he lost the ability to bowl the inswinger because England had the mistaken policy of trying to use him as an all out fast bowling ‘enforcer’ so he tried to bowl too fast when he didn’t quite have enough genuine pace, attempting to buy wickets by bowling bouncers. It worked to a degree, but it was very expensive; his economy per wicket average went from 21/22 to 28.70 in the second part of his career. England, having no leg spinner, or any real quality spinner of any kind, bar an ageing Derek Underwood and just Willis as a genuine all out quick, were reliant in battle on medium pacers, their attack being very disappointingly limited in quality and scope. No wonder they couldn’t ever really challenge the West Indies and went from 1974 to 1990 without even a single Test Match victory against them.
These two are great together. Find an excuse to get them on camera more often for the YT channel ✌️
Jason Roy at WCs - 443 runs @ 63.3, SR 115.4 How can you leave him out? Only Stokes has more runs at a better average Woakes not even getting a mention is criminal too
It is impossible to compare the ODI game before the late 90s to the present. This should have been divided into two parts as pre 90s and post.

Thank all the Gods that they mentioned Jimmy and Broad in the end, I might've had a heart attack😢😢
Interesting choices - good discussion.
I think the option of Gough, Archer and Wood makes the side too pace heavy for modern day cricket. There needs to be a left arm bowler or a swing bowler like Defraites.. I would go with P Defraites second highest wicket taker in world cups for England also could smash a few in the end. Decent fielder in the deep and less injury prone.
I hope Nas and Athers will be commentating at the World Cup!
Not saying that I disagree with you, because he was off obviously the striker bowler in our world cup winning tournament, but it seems weird seeing Jofra Archer on this having only played 21 ODIs for England
@daveborder7751

Because Gooch is a god & he made his runs when the wickets did something & often did a lot-unlike the modern lot who are flat track bullies, with small boundaries, huge bats & birdbrain bowlers who keep bowling short. Will be interesting to see how good Roy etc do in the Subcontinent on turning wickets against India, Pakistan etc, in a round robin format where only four teams make it to the semis & not on docile wickets at home.

These two need a podcast with guests every month
Trott at No.3 surely deserved a shout
An impossible task comparing across generations in a part of the game that’s seen such monumental change. The 2019-2023 team would eat a 1970’s-1990’s team for breakfast.

I would always pick Graeme Hick. Was way ahead of his time, averaging 40 in World Cups, and could also bowl a bit. Always seems to be massively overlooked, and never ever gets the respect that he has earnt.

Have we missed anyone obvious? Yes Liam Plunkett!! They even mentioned the ability to bowl during any phase of the game, he was the master of that. Still not been replaced in the England team. All for nostalgia & as great as they were former players would get nowhere near that 2019 team, they'd taken it to a different level.

It's amazing that these great cricketers and commentators can't remember the 1992 WC... Maybe they were too busy concentrating on their own careers. Hussain had a glimpse of international cricket in 1990, Atherton was a mainstay in tests alongside Gooch. I think it's wise to pick the 2019 team & +or- from the past. Mine would be... Gooch Bairstow Gower Stokes Fairbrother Botham Buttler (c) De Freitas Archer Gough Rashid.
India all time odi xi Sachin Sehwag Kohli Ganguly (c) Youraj Dhoni Hardhik Kapil Dev Ajit agarkar Harbhajan sing Zaheer khan
Interesting conversation, but take Sir Ian Botham for example. The Beefy of the late 70’s and early 80’s was our greatest player in my lifetime. But by the late 80’s and early 90’s his back ravaged, he was a lesser player. So my point is that all players have their peaks and troughs, making this imaginary task most difficult.
India all time test xi Sehwag Dravid. (wk) Kohli. (c) Sachin Pujara Laxman Kapil dev Ashivin Kumle Zaheer Jawagal srinath
No mention of Dennis Amiss first WC centurion
Here's my England's greatest CWC XI: Nick Knight Mike Atherton(c) Mark Ramprakash Rob Key Ronnie Irani Mark Ealham Jack Russell (wk) Dougie Brown Philip DeFreitas Ian Salisbury Devon Malcolm
My 11 would be Bairstow, Roy, Hales, Root, Stokes, Morgan, Buttler, Ali, Rachid, Archer, Woakes. Or move Hales out for Curran if you want another bowler.
What about plunket Got to be in Three dimensional Superb in middle overs
would definitely have Pietersen ahead of thorpe, who is also ahead of morgan would also have Flintoff ahead of Wood
Gooch, Buttler, Pietersen, Fairbrother, Stokes, Collingwood, Botham, Reeve, Flintoff, Rashid, Hendrick. I just know in my gut that team would smash Nasser and Athers side every single time.

Peterson didn’t do too much in WC, but he makes any all time England XI. Had he played a lengthier career, he would have held all the batting records. KP and AB de Villiers revolutionised that white ball style of play.
