Yep on the plus side these ugly towers are not meant to last long, when they built some new "luxury apartments" near me that cost 700k+ each and I overheard the workers saying expected lifespan was 10 years before defects.

When you know you're designing a building to concentrate the rays of the sun so badly it burns things, then there's something wrong when the developers have to pay more money to prevent it. That said, considering how they screwed over the city with the "public" sky gardens, I hope whoever owns it will be paying extra for that for many years to come.

I like the look of the building as do many people I know. And visiting the Sky Gardens and/or having lunch there is a great experience with some fantastic 360 degree views.

Is this like the building in Hollywood? I think at one time it was an amphitheatre. It ended up concentrating the sun's rays.

Watching the previous building being demolished was quite interesting, it was demolished bottom up, with each floor being peeled away one by one till only the centre core remained, there's a few videos of it.

I've seen buildings destroyed this way. The inside seems to melt and the floors are mostly torn out like you mention.

200 million to build and sold for 1.3 billion, I don't think they actually cared what people thought of it when profit like that was made.

Well "they" are wrong again. I knew about the building and it's death ray years ago, but I forgot about it.

I did look, and it’s possible someone else in the comments has already mentioned it, but Disney Hall (the L.A. Philharmonic symphony hall) in Los Angeles had a very similar problem with light blinding motorists.

Simon's hand motions throughout the video almost begs for somebody to but a Theremin in front of him just so we can still follow his hand movements while stock footage rolls.

I've always referred to it as the Motorola Building, because there was a Motorola radio handset of that shape. It causes some confusion, as some people think I mean a building owned or occupied by Motorola. :)

The parabolic mirror effect is common. I used ride a motorcycle to work. I would pass through an intersection on which one corner was a curved, glass building. Passing in front of it like driving through an oven

Man, London was ruined by all the new modern buildings. They could have easily built them to better fit the mood and setting.

Paris had the right idea - their ban on skyscrapers in the city (which was lifted in 2010 but is being reinstated) has helped. They do have a district 2 miles from the centre where there are lots (Brussels does similar, though closer), but it would have been an absolute waste to see steel and glass replace Paris' beautiful architecture. But the City is and always has been London's financial district, while La Défense was a more recent addition so it could be planned more effectively.

Primrose hill is useless I went there to have a look at the view and it was all ugly skyscapers and cranes what made it more funny was theres a metal plaque there telling you what all the buildings are you should be able to see so you can identify all the historic buildings that are now hidden from view.

when I was working at one place in London putting up electrical conduit, - I worked off the electricians plans only to start with, - if only I had looked at the plumbers plans also, - it would have saved a lot of time = all of my work was directly in the way of the fan cooling units that were now to be fitted ...the electricians plans were out of date! ...these planners do know how to party though! ...sadly they don't know how to clear their heads ready for work!

It will be interesting to see if this building ends up like the Eiffel tower. In that the Tower was universally hated on opening by Parisians. To the point where one restaurateur opened a restaurant in the tower so he did not have to see it all day. But later opinions changed and it became well loved.

I mean, I don't mind the shape of it and all that. But I had the thought from the beginning about the view from the top. Like yeah great idea, but there's no way you're gonna be able to see all that much with the building itself blocking your view from up there... Plus learning that it's not even a true public park like it was supposed to be. Although with it being a public park, my view my be a little skewed on that being an American. As our parks are literally public property that you need no appointment to show up at... Even the National Parks you can just show up to. Tours may need to be scheduled if that's what you want, but you can absolutely just show up

There's a difference between a nice summer's day and the full concentrated power of the sun :) This building is a no for me.

Personally, I find this the ugliest skyscraper in London. I'm really fond of The Cheesegrater. Less so The Gherkin and The Razor, but they're not without their charm. They give London juxtaposition - futuristicly new alongside the old. This thing is just derpy and embarrassing. Even when you gaze across the skyline, it looks (rightfully) shunned by all the others. Hopefully they'll build some nicer skyscrapers around it so it can at least be obscured.

I bet the original occupants of Caïro didn't much care for those weird triangles. But (GOOD NEWS EVERYONE) modern buildings are built to such poor standards (and on such valuable ground) that they rarely last 50 years. Let's all just fondly remember all those times that they tried to demolish the Eiffel Tower. I recently watched a video (on another channel) showing an abandoned mall. Yes there are many such videos. But this one was so pristeen... And in the center of a major Canadian city. And while watching, it left me wondering... Should it be a protected landmark? How many 80's/ 90's malls will be left standing 200 years from now? You get the connection to this, right? RIGHT?

Gee, the largest building around here is a grain silo. Haven't seen a building taller in many years.

Cost cutting when building British infrastructure projects is nothing new and has resulted in some terrible tragedies over the years, to say nothing of the expensive and disruptive repairs that have to be carried out that would not have been necessary had things been built properly to start with. Here in Britain we like to think we're really good at engineering but sadly bean counters not engineers often have the final say. Government projects though end up the going the other way, taking years later than they should to complete and being massively over budget. You cant win.

Hee, hee. Despite the fact I live in the green Jewish space laser ignition-threated tinder box called northern California (now rather damp thanks to El Nino), it's a fact we've got our very own leaning tower of San Francisco several hours south of here.

Check out New England cities. Northampton and Holyoke have some awesome Gothic architecture. The campus at Mount Holyoke College is top 5 in the country for all women's college. If you are out west, it's just the way the country expanded.

Maybe not gothic but some of the older universities have some pretty buildings. If you include the whole of America, there are also some pretty churches esp. in the former Spanish parts.

your country bulldozed a lot of things to make room for the car. watch some old films from the days when people could walk.

I cant remember where . Some developments in the hot west of the US went enthusiastically into installingvnew heat reduction windows. These windows 23re sonecsort of concave refeacted qindow. Yep the frefracteecthe suns heat back out away. Sort of like micrscopes flipping and concentrating rhe as yn away from the buildings and onto the surrounding area. A car lwft in a drivexway for 20 minutes was destoyed. In another area all plants andctrees in nearby were scorched to death within a vouple days. Roofs and vinyly sidings were bubbling and warped. In another area. Absolute genius, thus green construction. Apparently these green engineershad never been 10 year olds concentrating sunlighr through magnify glass. Even on an overcast day kids might succeed starting a fire.
