Bellingham did nothing in the second half, neither did Saka because Serbia sussed out their game and Cuckgate has no plan b so neither does the team. We should have got rid of him before this tournament, but because he loves rainbows and virtue signalling, the FA kept him for optics. He is a disaster of a manager relatively speaking to the talent he has at his disposal.

Trent is shocking in midfield. The chance Mitrovic had, from Trent unable to pickup ball under pressure from a defensive transition, summarizes exactly why it's a catastrophe waiting to happen. Sure, it's also a catastrophe waiting to happen as right back, as rapid wingers who seek space will exploit his flank. He should be only an option only when England are chasing a game and they need a more offensive right back option than Walker.

Southgate has no balls. Bellingham was great in first half but even he was doing nothing in the second. Saka was solid but again, nowhere in the second half. Once teams suss England out we have no determination and savvy to switch it up, instead, Cuckgate goes in to defence mode. We were lucky against Serbia and we will win against Denmark and Slovenia but we must be able to adapt and switch it up or the likes of Germany and Spain will smash us in to next week!

Couldn’t agree more. For the first 30 I was getting all giddy… believing Southgate had come of age. 3 at the back in possession high up the pitch reverting to a 4-3-3 without the ball and then quickly into a 4-1-4-1 when pressing high. I was blown away… we looked like a cohesive unit. The only obvious change would’ve been shaw in for Truppier to get a bit more width on the left… perfect! Then it all went to pot. A needlessly scrappy 2nd half. Kane starting to drop deep, Saka ineffective, Trent’s lack of experience as a 6, still no width on the left. Changes needed to come. I would’ve hooked Kane for Watkins. Mainoo needed more mins. Palmer for Saka… give their left back another headache to remedy. I would’ve gone Gordon in for Foden and tried to properly stretch the game. And just some words of wisdom to calm it all down. Get back to being patient. No pressure… You don’t have to score again… just don’t give them a sniff… knock it about and a chance will present itself anyways. Southgate got most things right for the kick off but next to nothing right in game time. Btw Cesc was excellent tonight punditing. What an intelligent tactical mind and speaker.

It's a solid enough start. The positive side is they looked defensively more sound than I feared they might. And Bellingham got a trademark sort of goal. The parts to improve are (as always with England) the midfield and controlling the game. They rarely play swashbuckling football in opening games so take the three points gratefully and move on. Slovenia and Denmark both looked decent in their game too so those should be similarly awkward games to negotiate. I suspect England might give one a doing and drop points to the other because they look like they have both of those things in their locker.

Score one goal and then sit deeper and deeper until an opponent that was being dominated starts to believe. That’s Southgate's signature. I don’t understand it. Can’t he see that’s what’s happening, and if so why doesn’t he correct it? It’s normal to get cagey and protect what you have, but Southgate should be on the touchline shouting at the team to push up.
