@@nigelwatson2750 Wrong. VAR forced him to give them because he missed three, although the two VAR pointed to were obvious. Without VAR, this referee would not have given them. Bear that in mind.

The amazing part of a defence made up of Shaw, Maguire, Pickford, Stones, and Walker is that there hasn't been a genuine clanger from any of them in the knockout games across 3 tournaments now. They're made plenty of mistakes, including for the second goal against France, but the sheer lack of quality in that defence compared to England teams of the past is incredible. First rule of being a defender: know how to defend.

@@darmate14 for everyone saying 2 pens you simply didn’t watch the game , he gave 1 pen that was the most evident penalty you will see , the second one he waved to play and on and was told to give it. Frances first goal came from a saka foul when we was in there final third , he cost us possession so many times by not giving us obvious fouls it was a joke

I think the media have been quite charitable about the game. France were there for the taking. Time for a more positive new manager. Sadly,Southgate is just not a winner.

The referee was biased against England, he gave England two penalties and France none.

Haven't watched this yet. I know it'll be great, they always are. Still a little to raw at the moment.

Sadly Guys England no matter how well they may play they always lose world cup knock out matches when they come up against an elite team as this has been going on since 1966 and totally pisses me off.

Southgate's nice guys will never win a tournament. If you can't win on home soil, you never will. England have had every opportunity last 18 months to win: home Euros, WC in middle of season so players are peak fitness. It's not going to happen.

The better team lost. Hard luck lads. That ref and the VAR team were snide. Their first goal shouldn't have stood. Kane should have had a penalty first half also. How can these things be missed with VAR? That's what you need to ask yourself. They can't! It's like catching a murder on camera, then the court pretending not to see it. It's madness. It happens in Boxing and MMA every week. Corruption is happening left right and center everywhere you look.

Probably didn't help that the kleptocratic institutions that effectively run our part of the world tried to turn a global sporting competition in to a colour revolution within the wider region of the host country.

England were just not good enough, needed 2 penalties to just be even so if you can’t score in open play against these teams then we can’t win a world cup

Every single time, whatever the era, coach, players etc, it always comes down to England chasing a game and desperately trying to cross the ball in from the wing. For the life of me I cannot understand why England don't pick a target man for these situations: look how the Netherlands switched the game up. Andy Carroll's time has gone and tbf he's his own worst enemy, but even Callum Wilson over Sterling would have been a sensible switch in the final 10 minutes. England are not and never will be Spain or Brazil. They're not Germany or Italy, either. When push comes to shove they revert to type and apart from Capello's qualifying campaign, no England manager has consistently picked a target man in the squad for these situations for decades. I reckon if you count how many of England's goals under Southgate have come from pens or directly from set piece, it just makes this lack of foresight even more inexcusable. In the last 10 mins, England should be able to call on a player like Ward Prowse or Maddison for set pieces, and have a better striker than Calvert Lewin or someone else to win it in the air. England were never going to break down that French team, especially when they brought off Saka and Foden. It's embarrassing because it's so obvious, you can pull out all the pro license badges and stats, but England would genuinely benefit from having a player like Kiefer Moore to throw on in the final stages of a game.

Imho the players we have we should have won TWC. Time for a new manager with better tactics and better team selection. Bye Gareth and thank you. Now let someone else be the England manager. Jimmy Barnsley.

Lack of winning mentality comes from the top i.e. nice guy Gareth. England should have learned 30 minutes in that the ref wasn't giving free kicks for certain challenges and stayed on their feet. Instead they were falling over right til the last minute.

The ref was completely fair and France was better than England.

Ref was poor but England didn't adapt. Should have stayed on their feet after the first 3 decisions were waved play on. The diving from an English team is embarrassing.
