Engines of Long Island Episode 3: ALCo Diesels (S1 E3)

I'm sorry that I did't get this out in time for Christmas, iMovie was giving me trouble again. As this is the last video I will upload for 2020, I just wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and thank you all for 200 subscribers! This episode of EOLI covers the Long Island Railroad's most successful and numerous locos- the ALCo RS-1, RS-2, RS-3, S-1 and S-2.

I just stumbled on your channel. wow. this brought back a lot of memories for me as a young kid who lived across from the Hollis station, and freight yards back in the 1960's. RS3 had that unique sound as it was in idle. And it would shake the ground as 2 or 3 of them were lashed up in MU to pull heavy freight. or passenger service pulling the heavy 12 and sometime 14 Pullman parlor cars out of track 8 in Jamaica during rush hour. I don't remember the Date, but it was on an early Summer Sunday walking to church. I heard that sound of CHUFF chuff chuff. Yes I saw a G5 East bound 8 cars. Steam my first ever on the LIRR. later that day I did not see but i could hear that sound of a steam loco west bound. Thank you for the peak back in time.

By the end of the Second World War, the downturn in the railroad industry and dwindling profits caused the bankrupt LIRR to go into receivership in 1949. In 1966, New York State bought the railroad's controlling stock from the PRR and put it under the newly formed Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority (renamed Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1968)

I worked for the rail road . I retired in 2007 and they still had some . After 76 they were used in freight. GP 38 started in 76 with bicentennial paint scheme . The C420s went to freight service until Atlantic Freight took over the freight part of LIRR.
