Engine won't turn over, locked up? We show how to diagnose and Repair a Briggs and Stratton

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We show how easy it is to diagnose and repair a Craftsman riding mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine that will not turn over. You will learn how to tell if it is an electrical problem, compression release or, in this case it's hydro locked and crank case full of gasoline. We explain why and how to switch from a NIKKI 6 Carburetor to a Walbro style Carburetor. Be sure to change your engine oil and filter if this happens to your machine.

    man, I wish we had guys like you up here in PA. our guys suffer from a bad case of "too obsolete to fix"...just tried to go after basics for a Kubota, and I can't even get tires or an oil filter, now! the cubby's down with a parasitic draw, the bolens is locked just like you described (and the only guy we had contact with for this won't touch it because its starter is so buried that it's too much trouble), the weed eater and a second push mower keep conking out, and we have a dead chainsaw we can't even get going. throw in the fact there's no vehicle here now capable of towing anything...

    WE had installed a new tractor motor and had it two weeks when the fuel made it to the oil crankcase and combustion chamber. This has happened to us over the years to many times that we decided to install a fuel shutoff valve so we can turn the fuel off when the tractor is parked. Its a nice service valve when servicing the fuel filter and carb too.

    u know what i did? i bought a complete 1992 Craftsman lawnmower with zero BS on it, i restored it and have been mowing with it for 5 years. i never have problems with it, that's how simple it is. couple mods to the drive pully and the blades. no cam to brake, no compression relief braking, no hydrostatic trans going out. and it was less money to redo an old lawnmower than to buy a new one.

    If it's truly hydro locked. Only 2 reasons, carb or fuel pump. That simple. Hydro lock is fuel on top of piston, it needs to be drained and blown out. Other common issues are mistaken for this is. Valve lash not at .004 in., cam compression release broken, weak starter, weak battery, loose ground and more. Take your time and diagnose it, check my other videos. It's all covered. Hope this helps.

    Tbone, do you find that the majority of engine problems are fixable or does it vary by degree of damage. In my short tenure of small engine repairs (former class A diesel mechanic), ive found the majority of issues are small and just created from poor maintenance, poor fuel choice and in some cases just flat out stupidity?? have certainly learned more about small engine maintenance and repairs just watching your videos.

    Great video, thank you. I’ve got a Kohler Command Pro 23 that won’t start. When you turn the key the flywheel and blades turn a hair then stop. Can’t turn the flywheel by hand at all. Changed the spark plugs and no gas came out. Changed the oil and it was dark but seemed fine, wasn’t overfilled. I put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes and still can’t get the flywheel to move any. Any advice? I sure would appreciate it.

    Thank you for this. Just had the same issue on my moms that has been sitting for a couple years. All of the fuel drained into the engine and the flywheel would not turn at all. I ended up changing the oil and everything and looks like I will have to do it again when I get a new carb because it probably caused the little fuel I put in to leak back into the new fuel. I didn’t know it would be locked up when I did it all. Figured it all leaked in because it sat for maybe 2-3 years. Hopefully it will fix it. On that old one you took off. It looks like it was cracked on the side where the bolt goes though.

Thought it was getting wore out by a knock at low speed. But when at higher rpm you barely hear it. What oil should i use 5w30?

    Why do all Briggs engines need dip stick wiped off and put back in to check oil level? Looking at it first pullout will always be overfull

    Hello! I have a riding mower with Briggs EX1900 intek. Weird thing. I’ve adjusted both valves to .004 It will turn over and hesitate at compression, then crank. If I turn it off and try to crank again, seems the battery doesn’t have enough power. Battery bolts show 12v. Oddly enough, if I turn flywheel by hand to the compression point and then just passed there, the engine cranks fine. Is it bad to continue turning the flywheel by hand to get it cranked? Will that damage anything?

    It will not damage it. Make sure your battery terminal bolts are tight also.

    Hi I have an 18.5hp Briggs that the engine will turn a little and stop at the compression stroke. I can help it past the compression stroke and it then has enough momentum to start. Does that sound like the compression release is not adjusted correctly? On a different video you found pieces of timing gear in the oil would an engine run at all with pices missing like that?

    Why does the carb stop the engine from physically turning

  • @RaleysSmallEngines

    @RaleysSmallEngines

    28 күн бұрын

    Good question. It's because the needle and seat leaks fuel into the combustion chamber (top of puston) causing hydro lock. If this happens the crank case will also have fuelixed with the oil and must be changed before running.
