ENGINE ROOM LULLABY (56) - Industrie VD4 aboard a motor barge

The VD4 is the one cylinder version of the VD engine. Of the VD4 six were made. The one aboard the nameless motor barge of Reinoud van der Nagel is, as far as we know, the only one still in existence. ‘VD stands for four stroke diesel,’ tells skipper Van der Nagel. ‘The first one was made in 1931 and the last one in 1957.’ Skipper Van der Nagel is a great fan of Industrie engines. ‘I fell in love with them. They were beautifully built; a beautiful, simple, sturdy engine. Hardly any mechanical noise, no smoke from the exhaust, very clean engines regarding combustion. It runs very quietly, you hardly hear the engine room. I like that very much.’ In his sailing houseboat Rijnland III stands a 2D4 of 40 hp and in his tugboat Penny Lane a 2VD4, also of 40 hp. With his business RN Techniek in Steenwijk he does repairs on Industrie engines. De VD4 aboard the motor barge is from 1933, as is the motor barge that was also built by Industrie. ‘It’s a tanker with four compartments. It was owned by an oil company, somewhere near Rotterdam. We sail on it as a hobby.’ Skipper Van der Nagel starts the engine and sails on the Kadoelenmeer. Rinus de Voorst of Marina De Voorst in Marknesse sails along on his tugboat Wuta (Kromhout 4TS, 60 hp) that serves as a filming platform.

Seeing a single cylinder in a VD4 engine amazes me, I didn't think there would be a 1VD4, they are very rare.
