ENGINE ROOM LULLABY (43) - Van Rennes 2DC aboard the Bregetta

In 1991, Bea Pijn-Blom and her late husband Jan Pieter Pijn bought the Bregetta, a small freight ship converted into a sailing houseboat. She was built in 1914 on the Czaar Peter Werf in Zaandam. ‘It was a freight liner for clean goods,’ tells Bea Pijn-Blom. ‘It sailed with flour and coffee to Amsterdam en sometimes to Groningen and Limburg. This year we published a book about the Bregetta (‘Motor vessel Bregatta, sailing through the time 1914-2019’) that describes her time as a freight liner. Up until 1978, it was a freighter. After that, she was converted into a sailing houseboat by the grandson of the skipper.’ Originally, there was a Honig of 24 hp in the engine room. It was replaced by a Kromhout of 30 hp. In 1958, the ship was lengthened, the cargo hold was raised and the current engine was put in place, a Van Rennes 2DC of 60 hp. Paul Huygen, a study friend of Jan Pieter Pijn and a specialist on old ships engines, demonstrates the starting procedure of the Van Rennes and takes her sailing on the Hoge Vaart near Almere.

That is just wonderful. I can so totally relate to it. I too have made engine room recordings, on board my beautiful, Abeking & Rasmussen 1968 built, 68 foot steel ketch, with her also beautifully polished, painted & lubricated, Gardner 6LXB .... Oh my god, what an incredible lullaby she has been humming to us for 45 years.... 45 -100% - trouble-free years I must had. And her marine gear ... also a with thing of beauty and reliability. From idle, that would put any baby to sleep, all the way up to the incredible sound of wide open throttle at 1300rpm! Thanks so much for posting your video, these things are absolutely priceless. The love affairs we have with our marine creatures is rather odd is it not? I'm so glad to be one of the odd fellows!

Politici gee natuurlik 'n ander spin daaraan.

I have a great appreciation for older things and older times. More so every day but especially for boats. That appreciation goes to the others like me also that thrive off of maintaining and keeping these old machines alive for the next rare person to take over it's care. People like these are really the types that are truly way more important to the world than many get credit. Anyone with the will power to keep an old boat alive is a dam good person in my book.

See Detroit diesels...yes, they have an oil filled crankcase. No, they don't intake air through the crankcase...the air goes in basically half way up the cylinder liner...when the piston falls down past the ports...and the blower (not a supercharger)...then blows air into the cylinder. The piston rising and the exhaust valve in the head opens...which blows the exhaust out the valve. The exhaust valve shuts, the remaining air in the cylinder is compressed and the injector fires The piston starts back down the cylinder and the 2 cycles start again..... kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipVm2pevoszLXdI.html
