I flew a Phantom X1 for several years. One nice thing about these little planes is the fact that we can land them safely a lot more places than a GA plane could ever get away with. I have set my plane down in some pretty odd places. Was the engine out because of high temps due to the long climb? Here in the SoCal high desert, we set our carbs so the Rotax never exceed 185 degrees on climb out to keep from having temp issues. A bit less power but longer engine life.

This was great fun to watch as it is always a treat to watch someone who knows what he is doing and knows his craft well enough not to get crazy. I liked the fact that when the engine quit he continued the flight as a glider instead of just circling down and landing. Makes me wonder what the glide ratio is on these (that) plane. Bravo.

Like chaspfrank said, "Altitude is my friend". I often practice deadsick landings from 1000 ft., or so. I kill the engine, flip switch back to ON, ready to restart, if I necessary. It's great practice. I was surprised by how much difference there is between 'power back', and 'power off'. An idling prop gives more push than you'd think, noticeable difference.

tampicokid. i missed the part where he implies anything, its simply an experiential video. Its also a good video to advocate for engine failure training, as others have pointed out ultralight crashes from engine failure are not uncommon. in need not be a dire situation but many survivable situations kill people who failed to act appropriately.

lw216316 exactly..I didn't think he implied anything...now, tampicokid, he implies that he's an expert and wants everyone else to believe that too..lol.." I flew for 24 years!!.. therefore if you think he's good, you should see me!!!"....lol

@@alaskaaksala123 ok chuck.
I used to practice engine outs all the time, after a while it became very relaxing to go up to 5 thousand ft and kill the motor and glide back down to earth. And if you hit a thermal, that can prolong your descent home 👍
From a new trike pilot, awesome job, and yes altitude is our friend!!! Good glide ratios help too. Mine is about 8 to 1.
Kudos man, Your habbits of flying high and not low gave you plenty of time to think.

Altitude is always your friend 😀
Just saw this video. I have a sailplane permit and about 800 hours. Bravo.
perfect landing ! you were lucky to be at high altitude, but you remain calm to perform so well. good job!
Great job of not panicking and thankful you had plenty of altitude.
Total experience on the flight! Good luck !
Great Job my man, Glad your back on the ground. Super job!

Very nice landing. As far as I can tell, you appeared calm throughout the video.
the up side is you still have the same amount of fuel you started off with and you got some great flying in too boot
Awesome skills, Glad you're ok.
Had a Quicksilver, wish i had enough to get another. thanks for the vid..
Haha ... I was enjoying this video very much. This guy had teached me a learning how to fly an ultralight with engine off as a sailplane
handled like a pro!
Bravo. Well flown. Height and AS are the best friends for fixed and rotor wing.Great landing.
now that a great video with a great ending.......
Thanks, the first UL pilot I see on youtube who didn't crashed only due to a little engine failure :)

ya man! iv got loads of flight time in a skycatcher...we drill engine failures a lot. and im glad we do...
Altitude saves!😊 IF we are continually thinking, "Where would I land if my engine failed RIGHT NOW"?,...we're good. It's what makes it 100 times more fun...peace of mind. Great job my friend.
wow I thought you were going to be gliding up there all day. Great when you can have an engine failure and go sightseeing and fly circuits
Excellent job “Flying the Aircraft” instead of losing your s**t because you lost your power. Thanks for sharing!
Nicely done.
Damn what a great landing!
Nice landing
Excelente aterrizaje, 100%100 control y serenidad .
FANTASTIC! Best ultra light failure ive seen yet you did a fantastic job and stayed calm the whole time. I was begging to think all ultralight pilots were amateurs with all the crash landings and failed takeoffs on youtube lol

Most Iv seen are on take off. You do not want a eng fail on a take off! That's for darn sure, We had a guy die over here last year because he use wrong replacement Nuts on a chopper Something to do with aluminum and titanium I didnt really understand. That's why you need to know your stuff and your equipment. But This guy keep his Cool.
Beautiful job buddy! !!

Perfect! You could not have done it better.
Beautiful landing!
Great Job sir. well done. training it is!! and a kool head. 100-100
Excellent aviating. What instrumentation is in your aircraft? What is the procedure if you have to land at a GA airport and you do not have a radio? My Private Certificate expired many years ago. I would love to have an untralight to be back in the air again.
no panic luckily it's not like the space shuttle it can glide for a long time not falling off the sky cool footage the earth is flat and the sun is close by and a good pilot! cheers!
Well done,bravo
how fast will these start dropping once the motor fails? They seem like they would glide well
Nice landing! What is the glide angle on that ultralight? It seems like you were in the air an awful long time after the engine quit.
LOL I don't even know you and i'm super happy you landed without crashing!

Thanks..I attended flight school at Orlando Executive. Maggie Larson is a great instructor.
I have 1562 no power landings. I have to get it right everytime with no engine. I'm a Skydiver
what model of ultralight is it? Is it still in production?
Good one. What's the glide ratio of that thing?
Can you elaborate on the cause of the engine out. Looks like a 2-stroke rotax
Nice landing!
Holy freaking crap! How did you stay so calm? Unbelievable!
what kind of engine is it please?
Like chaspfrank said, "Altitude is my friend". I often practice deadsick landings from 1000 ft., or so. I kill the engine, flip switch back to ON, ready to restart, if I necessary. It's great practice. I was surprised by how much difference there is between 'power back', and 'power off'. An idling prop gives more push than you'd think, noticeable difference.
So I’m curious how do you get it back home or whatever
How far were you from the landing location?
Congrats on the nice save! Did the starter fail as well? Presumably the first thing you tried was to re-start the engine?
Happen to me in my ATF Trike. I flew for couple hours. Landed refilled the gas. But did not catch i kinked the gas line when i put my tank back on. Took off and at about 100 feet she quit. Lucky i had enough room to pull in and have a good landing. Hard lesson learned.
Why did the engine stop? Didnt sound like pistons or bearings,
So what happened to the engine? Did you run out of gas? How did you get it out of that field? Do you need a pilots license to fly that ultralight? How many hours do you have? Where was your intended spot to land if your engine did not quit? How much did that ultralight set you back?
Nice job!
Man, you were Cool as a Fan....I am in awe. Thanks for the inspiration. Just curious in case it wasn t mentioned elsewhere, where is this? It looks like Madison, Wisconsin. Thanks, and pardon the expression, Happy Landings!
Brian, Nice dead stick landing!
Awesome energy management-great job!Why NO attempt to restart?
Why the stall ? Plugs fouled ? Electrical ? Curious...
great job!
amazing skills
Well done
great landing dude
Great landing
Did you make any attempt to restart the engine?
Good flight! What the place?
beautiful landscape .. florida?
I notice a lot of people when they have engine out they never try to restart the engine... why is that?
Hello, good job ! But why you didn' t try to start again your engine ?
Are those safer than paramotors????? I want whatever is safest and I’ve seen a lot of wings collaps on paramotors in funky winds!!!
Nice landing . What happened to the engine ?
Amazing video

I been in hang gliders only a few times and always wanted ultralight. Take skills for any of them but keeping a lvl head is the key, Glad you landed safe. BTW what was wrong with eng?
Perfect landing. .
What are the engine do you use
what was the cause of the engine failure?
Excellent skill. Why did you take your time? to circle and loose altitude gently without gaining too much speed?
@12345thewoods

i took my time because i could and for speed on final i was maxed out..thanks for watching.
great skill and calm to handle this event! Teach us! Please! Use another clip to teach us while you are on the ground. Tell us how you handle the situation!
Are these things actually legal to fly at 4000 feet?
We practiced that a LOT in the Cessna's.
