    I have wondered what makes an airplane engine buzz like that. It’s funny because when you takeoff, the engine buzzes, then after a while it goes away. I would love an answer to this interesting question.

  • @sla31

    @sla31

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question, and actually has a pretty simple answer. During takeoff and initial climb is when the engines are running at full power. When at full power the fan blades are, of course, spinning faster than at any other time during flight. The buzzing, or roaring sound that you hear during takeoff, is a sound caused by the tips of the fan blades spinning faster than the speed of sound. What you're hearing is many small sonic booms, caused by the tips of the blades moving faster than the speed of sound. After the initial climb, once the air starts to get thinner, and less power is used, the sonic booms go away, because the fan blades are no longer spinning faster than the sound barrier. Thanks for watching my friend!

  • @MartinNeep

    @MartinNeep

    Actually, the sound doesn’t dissipate because the engine is going slower. At typical takeoff weights and temps, a -700 derated to 20K will takeoff with 83-88% N1. As the aircraft climbs and the EEC gradually increases the climb thrust limit to 24K, N1s will top out at about 98-99% N1. Typical cruise power at moderate weights and a cost index of 30 or less will be 85-88% N1. The real reason the sound diminishes during the climb is simply because the air density decreases. Sound waves cannot propagate so easily in thin air and so the intensity of the sound is attenuated.

  • @sla31

    That's true, but look at it this way. Most people buy an iPhone to use as their phone/handheld computer. They cost over $1,000. My iPhone 11 Pro, since I wanted the larger hard drive, cost me over $1,400. But I don't look at is as buying a phone. I had a perfectly good iPhone X that had no issues. I looked at is as buying a $1,400 camera, that also makes phone calls haha. One of the reasons that phones are so expensive now, is because people expect them to have awesome cameras. And awesome cameras are expensive. When you buy a new phone, one of the reasons it's so expensive, is because of the cameras. So, if you look at it like that, it should be just as good as a $1,000 stand alone camera.

    They have Dramamine at airports which really work for motion sickness. I have really bad anxiety but a 1 hour flight from Dallas to Lubbock Texas was smooth and took away the edge I had for my next couple of flights. Try shorter flights. At least that worked for me. Also get an aisle seat if you are claustrophobic. I am but the aisle seat helps alot. I hate middle seats and window seats. I start to panic.

  • @sla31

    @sla31

    4 жыл бұрын

    For engine buzz you just want to be in front of the engine. As long as you are in front of the engine blades, you’ll heat it. I prefer row 4 on Southwest’s 737-700’s. The 800 though. Not sure. I don’t fly southwest’s 800’s very often.
