Engine arrival: Gary
Year: 1933
For a few years, the four engines on the Brendam branch have tried their hardest to keep up with the increasing load the branch saw. And while they held out for a bit, they eventually started to fall behind. A new engine was brought on to help the engines on the branch. The new engine in question, would go on to leave his mark. However, his contributions, were an example of to much perhaps being to much.

Gary has got to be the most machine-like engine I have ever seen! He's basically a Terminator for the huge majority of the episode! 😆
For those who don't know, Gary is a 4-6-2 LSWR H16 Class Tank Engine. Only 5 of his kind (including himself) were built between November of 1921 and February of 1922. Originally working for the LSWR (London and South Western Railway) and the Southern Railway, these engines were known for their strength, power, and range for hauling goods. To say the least, they can pull 28,200 pounds of force. Unfortunately, all of them were scrapped by 1962.

@@coleselley3745 Kinda like what happened to the PRR T1s. And no, the T1s didn't have wheelslip issues, it's that the K4s that came before them had stupid amounts of adhesive force and far less tractive effort so the engineers were used to being able to set the regulator to maximum and throw the Johnson Bar straight to full forward. When the C&O got to operate a few of these monsters on loan from the PRR, they had no issues with wheelslip.

would make sense. A 60 mile long mainline with at least 6 major branch lines that add up the mileage, it would require a lot to run the railway
So Gary was suffering from Saitama Syndrome… makes sense.

@@kisarabanuja3254 The trouble is that Henry, Merlin and Gordon were all designed for passenger or at best mixed traffic use. Gary is a step up from all of them. Gordon would be better for freight with smaller wheels(more surface area touching). In terms of tractive effort Gary is similar to a 9f although distance would be an issue.
@kisarabanuja3254
10 ай бұрын
@@primeprover I'll lay out the details. Tractive effort (top 6 most powerful engines in the fleet by tractive effort in the series): Gary (28,200 lbf) - LSWR H16 Gordon (29,835 lbf) - GNR Gresley A1, his driving wheels are the largest out of these (at 6 foot 8 inches) so I don't know what you are trying to prove. Merlin (~30,000 lbf) - LSWR N15 with modifications such as smaller driving wheels (I predict 5 foot 8 inches). Geoffrey (31,325 lbf) - GCR 8K Henry (~33,000 lbf) - three GNR Gresley A1 cylinders (20 x 26 inches) and boiler (180 psi) paired with a GNR C1 cab, firebox and valve gear. I predict his wheels are roughly 6 feet. For reference: Murdoch (39,667 lbf) - BR Standard 9F
I seriously gotta admit that I personally just suddenly noticed that we're gettin' our official 3rd locomotive in the officially well-known Southern Railway livery from the Southern Railway SINCE Thomas the Tank Engine himself followed by Merlin meaning we've now got several locomotives from the Southern Railway residing on the Island of Sodor's own officially well-knowingly famous North Western Railway! KEEP UP WITH THE EXCELLENT WORK AS ALWAYS FOR SURE!

The pure shock Colin had when Gary could pull two trains was funny
My word, an engine who's personality reflects mine on a day-to-day basis lol.
This guy should pull an American freight train. He’d have a blast since they’re longer and heavier than British freight trains
You know, Gary's a lot like my Broadway Limited N Scale PRR T1. At the club I run at, we often have to run long trains over 3% or even 4% grades during ops. I usually run _multiple_ Bachmann SD45s (for those over in the UK used to Bachmann Branch Line stuff, these are more on-par with Graham Farish in terms of quality) on the iron ore train (28 ore cars weighted to NMRA specs plus a caboose, also kind of a pain if you're not used to handling short-wheelbase rolling stock with truck-mounted couplers) but since my T1 could easily handle our express passenger trains (the Silver Bullet) I got curious and decided to use it to restage the ore hoppers. It managed to solo a train that usually takes three relatively modern 6-axle diesels to pull.
It is nice to see that Gary will enjoy being a banker locomotive from now on which makes Gary very happy and puts him in a better mood. Fan Of Hiro, you have done well and keep up the good work dude.
