Ғылым және технология

Is the 16mm F1.4 too old? Is an upgrade necessary? Is the 18mm so much better than the 16mm F1.4? Is the new 40MP sensor too much for the beloved 16mm F1.4?
Let's find out!

    When I was shooting with a Nikon 35mm film SLR, I owned and used a 24mm f/2. When I was shooting with a Leica 35mm film rangefinder, I owned and used a 21mm f/1.4. Based on my experience with the 24mm and 21mm focal length lenses. I know that I prefer the 21mm. When I began shooting a Fuji X APS-C digital mirrorless, purchased the 16mm f/1.4 because no other fast wide-angle lenses were available at the time. Today, I would not consider replacing my 16mm with an 18mm f/1.4 but I would consider replacing it with a 14mm f/1.4.

    Thanks for this Luca. I was resisting upgrading until I got the X-T5. I like your comments around close focusing and dramatic perspective shots for the 16 as well as your learnings around contrast. For that reason, I’ll be keeping it. Cheers.

    I sold my 16mm when I got this. The colors, contrast, sharpness, autofocus, less distortion, vastly superior CA, sun stars, and that extra bit of compression did it for me. The best fuji lens imo. For those worried about minimum focus distance it is splitting hairs. The 18mm focuses very close as well.

    Very good video as always Luca. For wide angle I have the XF16 f/2.8 and the XF23 f/2 and they’re more than enough for what I do (and I don’t use them much). My mostly used prime (and favorite) is the XF33 f/1.4 (incredible lens), now all I’m waiting for is to upgrade from the X-T4 to the 5. Be well and stay safe.

    Was comming from Sony APSC to xT3. I was considering replacing my do it all 16 /1.4 with the 18 /1.4 due to color fringing wide open and not fast enough AF for kids. Keep it for 16mm and composition with the close focus distance. Ad the 33/1.4 for the people shot and its versatility. Sharp and quick AF as the 18/1.4 as it also has the LM. Maybe a 14/1.4 could replace the 16/1.4 Get the 16-80/4.0 tomorow for travel and Video due to the OIS. Love the control of the XT line. Shooting is fun again ❤

    I would always go with the newer camera, in this case the X-H2. More resolution and more advanced body. As for the lenses, if you can use a tripod I would go with the 10-24, sigma 10-18 or tamron 11-20 for interior of monuments. The primes you mentioned aren't wide enough in my opinion

    First time I heard a wide angle lens outperforms 16 mm f1.4 in many aspects. However, I am suprised that 18 mm have a worse focus breathing performance. In spite of the advantages of 18 mm, I think 2 mm focal length difference really matters for wide angle lenses and I am really happy with 16 mm.

  • @jjchockey

    I’d argue it is worse. I don’t like the 16mm for people in general unless it’s centered in the frame. The 18mm has a lot less distortion which makes it better for people and it’s still wide enough for groups.

    Жыл бұрын

    @@rfa2381 the 18mm is a good balance. Still has the wide view but less distortion. The 16mm is just too distorted the taking a group shot. Not flattering at all. It also has a lot of other advantages over the 16mm such as bokeh, sharpness, more contrast, better auto focus, vastly superior CA (the 16 is unusable at 1.4 with backlighting).

  • @brownbear100
    @brownbear100 Жыл бұрын

    Maybe worth mentioning that the 16 1.4 isnt really a 16mm but seems more like a 17mm. Compare side by side with the 16 2.8 and this is very clear. This means that there is a strong argument to have both the 18 1.4 and proper 16mm 2.8 for better light and for a lighter carry. Its helps the 16 2.8 is the sharper of the two 16mm lenses also. Sold the 16 1.4 when I got the 18. Found the "16mm" focal length a bit uninteresting for my purposes, and because of the weight. I was prefering to take the MF samyang 12mm over the 16. And it has to be said those poor quality corners and borders really show up with landscape, astro and steet/documentary where you often end up with things on these areas. A couple of years later I picked up the 16 2.8 and appreciate this lens so much. The slightly woder perspective to the 16 1.4 and compact size (155g only) makes it more fun and inspirational for me. The ability to shoot close up with the 16 1.4 is fun, but not worth the trade offs anymore now there are a number of more modern lenses that have a similar party trick now. Glad I had the pleasure of owning the 16 1.4 for two years. But equally I dont miss it.
