I know everyone's entitled to their opinion and I don't mean to sound all "woke" and preachy, but it's 2020... and this kind of sentiment does give me some "toxic masculinity" vibes :/ My reply is going to be a bit long, sorry in advance! But I would really appreciate if you'd give it a read. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Taemin - after all, he and his group are 2nd generation idols - but he was often jeered at in the early years of his career for looking "too feminine" and often being misgendered for the sake of shits and giggles, called "pretty" and "beautiful", and he admitted later on how this caused him a good amount of distress because it made him think he's not "masculine enough" to be a "real man"- given he debuted pretty young (14) that's a lot for a teen and young adult to deal with mentally. Sure, he's got a naturally lithe frame (perfect for his style of dancing) and slender facial features that are basically the opposite of the "traditional" macho masculine features. But it was only in recent years that he fully embraced his androgynous features and accepted that the parts of his appearance others might consider as "too feminine" are a strength he can utilize, that yes, it's okay to be "pretty" and "beautiful", that those kinds of praises aren't exclusive to women or insulting to receive as a man, and that having feminine aspects in your appearance is not a weakness like he was led to believe early on. He even mentioned how for his song "Move", he and Koharu (choreographer) wanted to incorporate androgynous choreography that didn't adhere to traditional gender stereotypes and emphasized both his feminine and masculine features, especially in dance. After Move you can really see him growing into the role of a performer not afraid to utilize both masculine and feminine concepts and choreo into his releases. And since then, he's only solidified his image to the Korean general public (and I guess the international audience as well) as an artist who doesn't confine dance to typical gender norms and confidently and unapologetically utilizes their androgyny for well-executed and unique performances.
